The Psalms of David in Meter, Metrical Psalter · Psalm 37 – Psalm 47
PSAL. XXXVII.
FRet not thy ſelf becauſe of thoſe
that evill doers be,
Nor yet envious be at ſuch
as work iniquitie.
verse 2 For ſoon ev'n like unto the graſſe
cut down ſhall they be all,
And like unto the herbe that's green
they ſurely wither ſhall.
verse 3 Truſt in the Lord with all thine heart
and carefullie do good,
And thou ſhalt dwell into the land
well fed with needfull food.
verse 4 Delight thy ſelf in God alſo,
and he in every part
Moſt lovingly beſt deſires
ſhall give thee of thy heart.
verse 5 In all affaires commit thy way
unto the LORD thy King;
In him alſo truſt thou alway
who it to paſſe ſhall bring.
verse 6 And as the light thy righteouſneſ…
he ſhall bring foorth alway,
And ſhal thy judgement clearly ſh…
as bright as the noon-day.
verse 7 Reſt in the LORD with confidenc…
and without all debate
In every thing moſt patiently
ſee that for him thou wait.
Fret not thy ſelf becauſe of him
that proſpreth in his way,
Becauſe of him that brings to paſſe
devices ill alway.
verse 8 Ceaſe from the rage of anger ho…
and wrath forſake thou ſtill,
Fret not thy ſelf in any wiſe
to do that which is ill.
verse 9 For thoſe that evill doers be
ſhall be cut off in all,
And they that wait upon the Lord
the earth inherit ſhall.
verse 10 For yet a little while, and loe
the wicked ſhall not be:
Yea thou his place conſider ſhalt,
and it thou ſhalt not ſee.
verse 11 But all the meek inherit ſhall
the earth in every place,
And greatly ſhall delight themſelves
in th'abundance of peace.
verse 12 The wicked man againſt the juſt
doth plot him for to kill.
And with his teeth moſt furiouſly
he gnaſheth on him ſtill.
verse 13 The Lord ſhall ſurely ſcorn & laugh
at him in all his way,
For he in heaven doth clearely ſee
that comming is his day.
verse 14 The wicked have drawn out their ſword,
and bent their bow with might,
The poore and needy to caſt down,
and to ſlay men upright.
verse 15 Their ſword ev'n into their owne heart
moſt quickly enter ſhall,
Their bones not able us to hurt,
ſhall als be broken all.
verse 16 A little that the righteous hath
is ſurely better then
The riches in abundance great
of many wicked men.
verse 17 For of the wicked folk the arme
ſhall ev'n be broken ſmall:
But ſtill the LORD in mercy great
upholds the righteous all.
verse 18 The Lord moſt perfectly doth kne…
the dayes of the upright:
And their inheritance ſhall be
for ever in his ſight.
verse 19 They ſhall not be aſhamed in
ev'll tymes of miſerie,
And in the dayes of famine great
they ſatiſfied ſhall be.
verse 20 But wicked men ſhall periſh, and
Gods foes as lambs fat all
Shall be, they ſhall conſume, to ſmo…
conſume away they ſhall.
verse 21 The wicked man doth borrow oft
and not again doth pay:
But ſtill the righteous mercy ſhewes
and giveth much alway.
verse 22 For ſuch as of him bleſſed be
the earth inherit ſhall,
And they that curſed be of him,
ſhall be cut off in all.
verse 23 A good mans ſteps are by the I
ev'n ordred well alway,
And he in loving kindneſſe ſtill
delighteth in his way.
verse 24 And though he fall, he utterly
ſhall not in all the land
Be too caſt down, for that the LORD
upholds him with his hand.
verse 25 I have been young, and now am old
yet juſt men and their ſeed,
I have not thus forſaken ſeene,
as forc'd to beg their bread,
verse 26 He ever is moſt mercifull
when he ſees men in neede,
And alſo lendeth chearefully,
and bleſſed is his ſeede.
verse 27 Depart from ill with all thine he
and good doe more and more,
And thus through Gods protection
dwell thou for evermore.
verse 28 For well the Lord doth judgeme… lo…
ſuch as are ſaints indeed
B… ſtill preſerv'd, but of ill men
cut off ſhall be the ſeed.
verse 29 The righteous all that fear the Lo…
inherit ſhall together
The pleaſant land, and joyfully
ſhall dwell therein for ever.
verse 30 The mouth of him doth wiſedo… ſpe…
that righteouſly doth walk,
His tongue alſo inſtructed ſtill
of judgement ſound doth talk.
verse 31 The law of his moſt gracious Go…
doth in his heart abide,
In whatſoever way he walks
none of his ſteps doth ſlide.
verse 32 The wicked man the righteous …
doth watch both night and day,
And by all means he can deviſe
he ſeeketh him to ſlay.
verse 33 The Lord will not him in his hand
leave, as ſome think amiſſe,
Nor yet for wicked him condemne.
even when he judged is.
verse 34 Wait on the Lord, and keep his way,
and thee exalt ſhall he
The land to have; when wicked are
cut off, thou ſhalt it ſee.
verse 35 The wicked very great in power
I have attentive ſcene,
And ſpreading forth himſelf at large,
like to a Lawrell greene.
verse 36 Yet he away did paſſe, and lo
he was not on his ground;
Yea, I him ſought moſt carfully,
but he could not be found.
verse 37 The perfect man mark, and behold
the upright for a ſpace,
For after all his troubles paſt,
the end of him is peace.
verse 38 But the tranſgreſſours fearfully
ſhall be deſtroy'd together,
The end of all the wicked men
ſhall be cut off for ever.
verse 39 But the ſalvation of the juſt
is of the LORD at length,
In time ev'n of their troubles grea…
he is their onelyonly ſtrength.
verse 40 God ſhall help and deliver the
from men that are unjuſt;
He ſhall deliver them and ſave
becauſe they in him truſt.
PSAL. XXXVII.I
O Lord though 'gainſt thee …
in wrath rebuke me not,
Nor yet ſeverely chaſten me
in thy diſpleaſure hote.
verse 2 For thy ſharp arrowes ſtill do
faſt in me more and more,
And als thy hand which heavy i…
me preſſeth very ſore,
verse 3 There is no ſoundneſſe by thy wrath
my troubled fleſh within,
Nor in my bones is reſt becauſe
of my moſt grievous ſin.
verse 4 For mine iniquities moſt vile
gone ov'r my head now be,
Even as a heavy burden they
too heavy are for me,
verse 5 My fearefull wounds are all corrupt
and ſtink in my diſtreſſe,
All this is come to me, becauſe
of mine owne fooliſhneſſe,
verse 6 I troubled am with ſorrowes great,
and bowed downe alway,
So greatly that afflicted I
go mourning all the day.
verse 7 For a diſeaſe that loathſome is
my loines doth alwayes fill,
So that in all my weari'd fleſh
there is no ſoundneſſe ſtill.
verse 2 I feeble am and broken ſore:
I have in this my ſmart
Ev'n roared ſtill by reaſon of
diſquietneſſe of heart.
verse 9 O LORD my GOD, my whole de…
is ſtill before thine eye.
My heavy groning in my grief
is not now hid from thee.
verse 10 My heart doth pant, my ſtreng… likew…
me faileth left alone;
As for the cleare light of mind eyes
it all is from me gone.
verse 11 My lovers and my friends aloof
from my ſore ſtanders are,
My kinſemen als, as I have proof,
do likewiſe ſtand a farre.
verse 12 Thoſe alſo that do ſeek my life,
for me their ſnares do lay;
They ſpeak miſchief, and als deceit
imagine all the day.
verse 13 But as a deaf man I indeed,
heard neither great nor ſmall,
And as one dumb I was, that his
mouth op'neth not at all.
verse 14 Thus I was as a man that doth
not hear in any way:
And in whoſe ſilent mouth alſo
are no reproofes alway.
verse 15 For I in thee alone, O LORD,
do hope, moſt free of fear,
O LORD my GOD, when I do cry
thou ſurely wilt me hear.
verse 16 For I ſaid, Hear me, leſt that they
rejoice ſhould over me;
They'gainſt me when my foot doth ſlip
themſelves do magnifie.
verse 17 For I ſore troubled ready am
to halt ev'n more and more,
My ſorrow als continually
is recent me before:
verse 11 For I ſincerely will declare
my great iniquitie:
I alwayes for my grievous ſin
will ſurely ſorry be.
verse 19 But my malicious en'mies all
are lively, ſtrong, and great;
And they are alſo multiplied
that wrongfully me hate.
verse 20 They alſo that unthankfully
for good me render ill,
Mine adverſaries are; becauſe
what's good I follow ſtill.
verse 21 O LORD, my GOD, forſake me…
far from me never be;
verse 22 O LORD, who my ſalvation a…
make haſte for help to me.
PSAL. XXXIX.
I Said, I will now carefully
take heed unto my way,
Leſt with my tongue moſt fooliſhl…
I ſin and go aſtray:
I with a bridle ſtrong will keep
my mouth ſtill more and more
While that the wicked alwayes is
in preſence me before.
verse 2 I was then dumb with ſilence d…
from good I held my peace:
My ſorrow great exceedingly
was ſtirred in its place,
verse 3 My heart within me ſtill was hote,
while I was muſing long:
The fire did burn exceedinglie,
then ſpake I with my tongue.
verse 4 Lord, make me now to know mine end
and meaſure of my dayes,
And what it is, that I may know
how frail I am alwayes.
verse 5 Behold, thou as an handbredth haſt
my dayes all made to be,
And all mine age heer on the earth
as nothing is to thee:
Yea, verily, heer ev'ry man
though he were never ſo great
Is altogether vanitie,
ev'n at his beſt eſtate.
verse 6 Surely man walks in a vain ſhew
diſquieted in vain,
He heaps up riches and not knows
who gather ſhall that gain.
verse 7 And now, Lord, in this time of grief
what wait I now for me,
My hope that alwayes ſtedfaſt is
is ever ſtill in thee.
verse 8 From my moſt vile tranſgreſſions▪
deliver now thou me,
And make me not of fooliſh men
a baſe reproach to be.
verse 9 Thus troubled very ſore I was,
even dumb without reply,
Becauſe thou didſt it, I my mouth
not opned by and by.
verse 10 Remove thy ſtroke away from …
which I cannot withſtand,
I am conſumed by the blow
of thy moſt heavy hand.
verse 11 When with rebukes thou doſt co… re…
man for iniquitie,
Thou waſts his beautie like a moath
each man is vanitie.
verse 12 My prayer Lord hear, and now unt…
my cry incline thine ears,
By miſregard hold not thy peace
at thoſe my wofull tears:
For I with thee moſt ſurely am
a ſtranger here and there,
And a ſojourner for a ſpace,
as all my fathers were.
verse 13 O ſpare me that I may my ſtrength
recover as before,
Before I go away from hence,
and after be no more.
PSAL. XL.
WIth confidence ſtill for the Lord
I waited patiently,
And loving he to me inclin'd,
and quickly heard my cry.
verse 2 He brought me from a fearfull pit
out of the mirie clay;
And ſet my feet upon a rock,
and ſtabliſh'd faſt my way.
verse 3 A new ſong in my mouth he put
GODS praiſe for to record:
Yea many ſhall it ſee and feare,
and ſhall truſt in the LORD,
verse 4 Bleſt is the man that makes the Lord
his truſt to which he flies,
And not reſpects the proud, nor ſu…

Which thou haſt done, & als thy tho…

They can not all be reckned up
in order unto thee,
If I them would declare, they are
mo then can numbred be.
verse 6 Thou ſacrifice and offrings als
didſt not at all deſire,
Mine eares thou opned, but for ſin
no offrings didſt require.
verse 7 Then ſaid I Lord, loe now beh…
I gladly come to thee,
For in the volume of the book
it written is of me:
verse 8 I take delight thy bleſſed will
to doe in every part,
Yea, LORD, thy law moſt holy is
alwayes within my heart.
verse 9 In the great congregation I
have preach'd thy righteouſneſſe;
My lips I have not, Lord thou knowſt;
refrained more or leſſe.
verse 10 Thy righteouſneſſe within my heart
to hide I had no will,
Thy faithfulneſſe I have declar'd
and thy ſalvation ſtill.
Thy kindneſſe which moſt loving is
I not concealed have,
Nor from the congregation great
thy truth which thou me gave.
verse 11 Thy tender merciemercy now, O LORD,
withhold thou not from me:
Me let thy kindneſſe and thy truth
preſerve continuallie,
verse 12 For ills innumerable ſtill
me compaſſd round about,
My ſins have taken hold on me,
thus can I not look out,
They are in number ſurelie mo

Therefore my heart through grie…
me faileth all indeed.
verse 13 Be pleaſd, O Lord, that now …
delivered be by thee;
O LORD in mercy make great h…
to ſend thy help to me.

Let thē be backward driven & ſha…

verse 15 And for reward of their great ſh…
let them be ſtill alway
Moſt deſolate, that unto me
Aha, Aha do ſay.
verse 16 Let all thoſe that thee ſeek rejo…
and ſtill be glad in thee,
Let ſuch as thy ſalvation love,
ſay, GOD we magnifie.
verse 17 But I am poor and needy als,
the LORD yet thinks on me,
Thou my deliv'rer art and help,
LORD let no tarrying be.
PSALME XLI.
HE bleſſed is that endevours
the poor for to conſider,
The LORD in time of troubles great
will ſafelie him deliver.
The LORD will him preſerve alive,
and bleſſe him ever ſtill,
And thou wilt not deliver him
into his enmies will.
The Lord wil ſtrengthen him when as
he languiſhing is laid
Upon his bed; in ſickneſſe ſore
thou wilt make all his bed.
verse 4 I ſaid, in mine affliction, LORD,
be mercifull to me,
And heal my wounded ſoul, for I
have ſinned againſt thee.
verse 5 Mine enmies all ſpeak ill alwayes
of me; me to defame
When ſhall he die, and when alſo
ev'n periſh ſhall his name?
verse 6 If he to ſee me come, he ſpeaks
words altogether vain,
His heart ſin gathreth, when he go…
he tells it all again.
verse 7 All that me hate, againſt me ſtill
do whiſper great and ſmall,
Againſt me do they wickedly
deviſe my hurt in all.
verse 8 An ill diſeaſe ſay they doth clea…
unto him faſt and ſore,
And now that he in bed doth lye
he ſhall riſe up no more.
verse 9 Yea more mine own familiar frie…
in whom I truſted well,
Which at my table ate my bread,
againſt me lift his heel.
verse 10 But thou, O Lord, be mercifull
now unto me alway,
And by thy favour raiſe me up
that them requite I may.
verse 11 By this I clearly now do know
I favour have of thee,
Becauſe mine enemie that is fierce
doth not triumph ov'r me.
verse 12 And as for me, thou me uphold'ſt
in mine integritie,
And thou alſo before thy face
for ever ſetteſt me.
verse 13 The LORD, the GOD of Iſrael
be bleſſed among men,
From everlaſting and for ay,
Amen, yea and Amen.
PSAL. XLII.
EVen as the hunted Hart doth pant
at water brooks to be,
So doth my poor diſtreſſed ſoul
O GOD pant after thee.
verse 2 My ſoul doth thirſt for God, for God
that's living evermore:
When ſhall I come for to appear
the mightie God before?
verse 3 My teares have been mine only meat
by night and als by day,
While they continuallie to me
where is thy God do ſay.
verse 4 When I thoſe things remember, I
in me my ſoule anone
Powre out; for with the multitud…
in gladneſſe I had gone,
With them unto the houſe of God
I went without delay,
With voice of joy & praiſe, with th…
that did keep holy day.
verse 5 O why art thou caſt down my ſo…
what doth diſquiet thee?
Hope thou in God, for yet I ſhall
him praiſe for helping me,
verse 6 O God, my ſoul is quite caſt dow…
I thee remember will
From Hermonites and Jordans …
and from the Miſſar hill.
verse 7 At the noiſe of thy water ſpouts
deep unto deep doth call,
Thy waves and als thy billows great
are now gone ov'r me all.
verse 8 His loving kindneſſe yet the Lord
command will in the day,
Unto the God even of my life
by night I'le ſing and pray.
verse 9 My rock, why haſt thou me forgot?
to God now ſay I will.
Why for my foes oppreſſion
thus mourning go I ſtill?
verse 10 As with a ſword within my bones
mine en'mies me alway
Reproch, while daily unto me,
where is thy God they ſay?
verse 11 O why art thou my ſoul in grief
caſt downe as one oppreſt?
Why art thou thus diſquieted
in me, and takes no reſt?
Hope thou in GOD, for I ſhall yet
him praiſe with heart anone,
Who of my count'nance is the health
and als my GOD alone.
PSAL. XLIII.
IUdge me, O GOD, my cauſe againſt
th'ungodly nation plead,
From th'unjuſt and deceitfull man
deliver me with ſpeed.
verse 2 For of my ſtrength thou art the Go…
why me oft caſts thou ſo?
Why go I mourning for the great
oppreſſion of my foe?
verse 3 O ſend thou out thy light and tru…
let them ſo leade me ſtill,
And to thy Tabernacles bring,
and to thy holy Hill.
verse 4 Then will I to Gods altar go,
to God my chiefeſt joy:
Yea, God my God, thee for to prai…
my harp I will imploy.
verse 5 O why art thou caſt down my
with grief that is in thee?
And why art thou in all this time
diſquieted in me?
Hope thou in God, for I ſhall yet
him praiſe with heart anone,
Who of my count'nance is the heal…
and als my God alone.
PSAL. XLIIII.
WEE with our ears have heard G…
our fathers have us told,
What great work thou didſt in their dayes,
even in the times of old.
verse 2 How thou the heathen didſt drive out
and plant them with thy hand,
How thou the people didſt afflict
and caſt out of the land.
verse 3 For they not in poſſeſſion ſure,
the land that they did crave
Did get by their own proper ſword,
nor did their arme them ſave;
But thy right hand, and als thine arm
and the light of thy face,
Becauſe to them a favour great
thou hadſt in every place.
verse 4 Thou art mine everlaſting King,
O God for ever bleſſd,
Thy deliv'rances now command
for Jacob ſore diſtreſſd.
verse 5 Through thee ſurely we will puſh down
our emnies all unwiſe,
We through thy name wil down them tread
that up againſt us riſe.
verse 6 For ſurely in my brittle bow
no truſt at all I'le have,
Nor yet in any place my ſword
from danger ſhall me ſave.
verse 7 But thou from all our enemies haſt
us ſaved by thy Name,
And as for thoſe that hated us,
thou haſt them put to ſhame.
verse 8 In God who ſtrong and mighty is
we boaſt even all the day,
And for thy grace and kindneſſe gre…
we praiſe thy Name alway.
verse 9 But thou in wrath hath caſt us off
as being of no worth,
And haſt us put to ſhame, and with
our armies goes not forth.
verse 10 Thou mak'ſt us all to turn the b…
from th'enmies that us foil,
And they that hate us cruelly
us for themſelves do ſpoil.
verse 11 Thou haſt us giv'n like ſheep for me
to thoſe that do us wrong:
And thou in wrath ha… ſcattred us.
the heathen all among.
verse 12 For nought unto their wicked foes
thou ſell'ſt thy people ſmall,
And do'ſt not by their naughty price
increaſe thy wealth at all.
verse 13 Unto our neighbours a reproach
thou haſt us pointed out,
A ſcorn and a deriſion als
to all men round about.
verse 14 Among the heathen thou us mak'ſt
a by word ſtill indeed,
And als among the people all
a ſhakeing of the head.
verse 15 Before me my confuſion great
appears continuallie,
And of my face the ſhame like wiſe
hath alſo covered me.
verse 16 Even for his voice that doth reproch
and alſo doth blaſpheme,
By reaſon of the enmie great,
and avenger extreame.
verse 17 This ill all is upon us come,
yet thee forget not we,
Nor in thy Cov'nant all we have
once falſly dealt with thee.
verse 18 Our heart is not by any meanes
turn'd back from thee alway,
Nor yet in going have our ſteps
declined from thy way.
verse 19 Though in the place of Dragons fe…
thou haſt us broken ſore,
And with the ſhadow cov'red us
of death to be no more.
verse 20 If of our God the glorious Name
forgotten now we have.
Or to a ſtrange God ſtretched out
our hands his help to crave.
verse 21 Shall not the LORD Omnipotent
in wrath now ſearch this out?
For he the ſecrets deep doth know
of all mens hearts throughout.
verse 22 Yea, for thy ſake by wicked men
we kill'd are all the day,
We for the ſlaughter counted are
as ſheep to be alway.
verse 23 O Lord, why now thus ſleepeſt thou?
awake for to conſider;
Ariſe with ſpeed unto our help,
caſt us not off for ever.
verse 24 Wherfore thy face frō us thine own
thus hides thou more and more?
And our affliction doſt forget,
and our oppreſſion ſore?
verse 25 For down unto the duſt our ſoul
is bow'd, which doth us grieve;
Our belly in this trouble great
unto the earth doth cleave.
verse 26 Ariſe thou quickly by thy ſtrength,
now for us help to make,
And us in trouble now redeeme
ev'n for thy mercies ſake.
