The Psalms of David in Meter, Metrical Psalter · Psalm 18 – Psalm 21
PSAL. XVII.
O Lord that chiefly art my ſtrength,
thee dearly love I will:
The LORD my rock and fortreſſe is,
and my deliverer ſtill.
My God, my ſtrength in whom I truſt
my buckler als is he,
The horne of my ſalvation als
and Towre that is moſt hie.
verse 3 Upon the LORD who to be praiſ'd
is worthy I will call,
So in all dangers I ſhall be
ſav'd from mine enmies all,
verse 4 The ſorrowes great of fearfull death
me compaſſd all diſmaid,
And of ungodly men the floods
made me to be afraid.
verse 5 Of hell the ſorrowes alwayes did
me compaſſe fearfullie,
The ſnares of death with trembling fea…
and grief prevented me.
verse 6 I in diſtreſſe call'd on the LORD,
and cry'd to GOD with teares,
He from his Temple heard my voice,
my cry came to his eares.
verse 7 Then ſhook the earth, & trembled a…
the hills foundations both
Were mov'd, and als they ſhaken wer…
becauſe that he was wroth.
verse 8 Out of his noſtrils there went up
a ſmoak moſt fearfully,
And from his mouth a fire devour'd:
coales kindled were thereby.
verse 9 He alſo bow'd the heav'ns and cam…
down in a way moſt meet,
And darknes which was black & thick
there under was his feet.
verse 10 And he upon a Cherub rode,
and did moſt ſwiftly flie:
Yea, on the wings he of the wind
did flie with Majeſtie.
verse 11 He darkneſſe made his ſecret place,
his pau'lion round about
Were waters dark, and of the skies
thick clouds all ſtretched out.
verse 12 At the brightneſſe that him before
was in his fearfull ire,
His thick clouds paſſed here and there,
hailſtones and coales of fire.
verse 13 The Lord als thūdred in the heav'ns
the Higheſt every where
Then gave his voice, hailſtones & coals
of fire that flamming were.
verse 14 Yea he ſent out his arrowes, and
them ſcattred great and ſmall,
And he ſhot out his lightnings bright,
and them diſcomfit'd all.
verse 15 The chanels of the waters deep
all ſeen then clearly were:
And als the worlds foundations all
diſcovered were each where:
At thy rebuke all this was done
moſt powerfully, O LORD,
Even at the fearfull blaſt of breath
thy noſtrils did afford.
verse 16 His readie help he from above
did ſend by his command,
Hee out of many waters me
drew by his mighty hand.
verse 17 He f…ō mine enmie that was ſtrong
moſt ſafely ſet me free,
From thē which did me hate; for the…
were all too ſtrong for me.
verse 18 Of my calamitie they did
prevent me in the day,
But the LORD in his merciemercy great
was ever ſtill my ſtay.
verse 19 He alſo a large place into
me brought forth by his might,
He did deliver me, becauſe
he did in me delight.
verse 20 According to my righteouſneſſe
the LORD rewarded me:
After the cleanneſſe of my hands
me recompenſd hath he.
verse 21 For of the LORD I have the wayes
well keept with all my heart,
And from my God I wickedly
would not at all depart.
verse 22 For all his judgements of great weight
were ever me before,
And I his ſtatutes not a way
did put from me therefore.
verse 23 I alſo was upright and true
before him in my way,
And I from mine iniquitie
did keep my ſelf alway.
verse 24 Therefore after my righteouſneſſe
GOD recompenc'd hath me,
According as his eyes have ſeen
my hands cleanneſſe to be.
verse 25 Thou wilt ſhew with the mercif…
thy ſelf in mercy right,
And with a man upright thou wilt
even ſhew thy ſelf upright.
verse 26 Thou with the pure thy ſelfe w… ſhe…
moſt pure in all thy wayes,
And with the froward thou thy ſelf
wilt froward ſhew alwayes.
verse 27 For thou the people poor wilt ſa…
that fore afflicted be,
And alſo wilt bring down at length
the lookes that are ſo hie.
verse 28 For thou in thy great mercy wil…
my candle clearly light;
The LORD my GOD enlighten will
my darkneſſe all made bright.
verse 29 For I by thee even through a tro…
have run, not hurt at all;
And by my GOD I with great force
have leaped ov'r a wall.
verse 30 As for GOD, perfect is his way,
GODS word is ſurely try'd;
He to all thoſe that truſt in him
a buckler doth abide.
verse 31 For who is God except the LORD?
yea, ſurely there is none:
Or who for ſafety is a rock
except our GOD alone?
verse 32 It is God onelyonly in his love,
that grideth me with ſtrength,
And maketh alſo all my way
moſt perfect at the length.
verse 33 Like Hinds feet which moſt ſwiftly run
he makes my feet to be:
And by his hand he ſets me up
upon my places hie.
verse 34 My hands to war againſt my foes
he teacheth, which they feel,
So that by the ſtrength of mine arms
I break a bow of ſteel.
verse 35 The ſhield of thy ſalvation als
to me is given from thee:
Thy right hand up me held, and great
thy gentleneſſe made me.
verse 36 Thou under me my ſteps haſt no…
enlarged by thy might:
So that my feet did not alwayes
ſlip from that which is right.
verse 37 Mine enmies I purſued have,
and overtaken ſlaine;
Untill they were conſumed all
I turned not againe.
verse 38 I have them wounded, that th… we…
not able for to riſe,
Under my feet moſt ſhamefullie
they fallen are likewiſe.
verse 39 For thou haſt girded me with ſtrēg…
to battell 'gainſt my foes:
Under my feet thou haſt ſubdu'd
thoſe that againſt me roſe.
verse 40 Thou alſo haſt given me the neck…
of all my foes ſo great,
That with thy ſtrength I might deſtr…
them that me alwayes hate.
verse 41 They cri'd aloud, but there was no…
them for to help or ſave,
Even unto the almighty LORD,
but he no anſwere gave.
verse 42 Then ſmall as duſt before the wind
I beat them by and by,
I did them caſt out as the dirt
that in the ſtreets doth ly.
verse 43 From peopls ſtrivings thou me fredſt
the heathens head thou me.
Haſt made; a people yet unknown
ſhall to me ſervants be.
verse 44 Aſſoone as they ſhall hear of me,
they ſhall obey me all.
The ſtrangers unto me ſubmit
themſelves moſt humbly ſhall.
verse 45 Thoſe that be ſtrangers from the LORD,
right ſoone ſhall fade away,
And out of their cloſe places all
ſhall be afraid alway.
verse 46 The LORD for ever liveth ſtill,
bleſt be my rock moſt high;
And let of my ſalvatidn now
the GOD exalted be.
verse 47 It is God that avengeth me
his mercy for to ſhew,
And under me the people all
he alwayes doth ſubdue.
verse 48 He me deliv'reth from my foes
yea, thou uplifteſt me
Above thoſe rebels: thou me from
the violent man madſt free.
verse 49 Therefore, O Lord, I unto the
among the heathen ſtill
Will give due thanks: and praiſes
unto thy Name I will.
verse 50 He to his King deliverance giv…
and ſhews of merciemercy ſtore
To his Anointed, David, and
his ſeed for evermore.

The firmament doth alſo ſhew
his handie work moſt rare.
verse 2 Day unto day through all the earth
ſtill u…treth ſpeach aright;
And als the knowledge of the ſame
night ſheweth unto night.
verse 3 Among men there no language is,
nor any kinde of ſpeach,
Wherein a moſt clear way their voice
is not well heard to teach.
verse 4 Their line throgh all the earth is gone
and als their words do run
Unto the worlds end, he in them
a tent ſet for the Sun.
verse 5 Which as a bridgrome is that comes
out from his chambers place,
And as a ſtrong man doth rejoice
moſt ſwift to run a race
verse 6 From heav'ns end is his going forth
his circuit als made meet
Unto its end is: and nothing
can be hid from his heat.
verse 7 The law of God is moſt perfect
converting Soules alwayes;
Gods teſtimony is right ſure,

The judgements of the Lord are …
and righteous altogether.
verse 10 They more to be deſired are
then gold, yea, much fine gold
Then hony and the hony combe
I ſweeter do them hold.
verse 11 Moreover thy ſervant by them
is warn'd to have regard,
And in the keeping of the ſame
there is a great reward.
verse 12 Who among men can underſtan…
what have his errours beene?
From my moſt vile and ſecret fault…
in mercy make me cleane.
verse 13 Keep me, ſo that preſumptuous ſins
reigne not now over me;
Then upright I and innocent
from the great ſin ſhall be.
verse 14 The words al of my mouth, & thoghts
that are within mine heart
Accept, O Lord, who both my ſtrength,
and my redeemer art.
PSAL. XX.
THe Lord thee hear even in the day
when he doth troubles ſend;
The glorious name of Jacobs God
in mercy thee defend.
verse 2 And from the Sanctuary ſend
thee help by his good will;
And out of Sions holy place
thee alwayes ſtrengthen ſtill.
Thy offrings all which thou doſt bring
let God remember now;
And alſo thy burnt ſacrifice
accept, and well allow.
According alſo to thine heart
thee grant things great or ſmall;
And by his loving kindneſſe als
fulfill thy counſell all.
verse 5 In thy ſalvation wee'l rejoice,
in our Gods Name we will
Set up our banners high; the LOR…

now hear us when we call.

How in thy dear Salvation ſhall
he greatly now rejoice?
verse 2 His hearts deſire moſt lovinglie
unto him giv'n thou haſt,
And alſo haſt not of his lips
withholden the requeſt.
verse 3 For with bleſſings of goodneſſe him
thou didſt prevent with ſpeed,
A crown of pure and fineſt gold
thou ſetteſt on his head.
verse 4 He humblie asked life of thee,
and thou it gav'ſt; yea more
Even length of dayes aboundantly,
and that for evermore.
verse 5 In thy ſalvation now is great
his glory by thine aid,
Both honour high and Majeſtie
thou haſt upon him laid,
verse 6 For thou for ever conſtantly
moſt bleſſed haſt him made;
Thou haſt even with thy countenance
him made exceeding glade.
verse 7 For in the Lord, the King doth truſt
and through the mercy great
Of the moſt High, he ſhall not be
once moved from his ſeat.
verse 8 Thy mighty hand ſhall find out
thine en'mies round about,
Thoſe that in malice ſtill thee hate
thy right hand ſhall finde out.
verse 9 Thou ſhalt them as a fiery oven

The Lord them ſwallow ſhall in w…
the fire ſhall them devore.
verse 10 Their fruit quite from the earth
thou ſhalt deſtroy indeed,
And from among the ſons of men
their moſt ungodly ſeed.
verse 11 For they 'gainſt thee intended

They did imagine, but can not
performe their enterpriſe.
