The Psalms of David in Meter with the Prose Interlined, Psalm 55 – Psalm 58

PSAL. LV.

GIve ear to my prayer, O God: and hide not thy self from my supplication.

2 Attend unto me, and hear me: I mourn in my complaint, and make a noise.

MY prayer Lord hear, hide thee not from my supplications voice,

2 Atend me, hear, in my complaint I mourn and make a noise.

3 Because of the voice of the enemy; because of the oppression of the wicked: for they cast iniquity upon me, and in wrath they hate mee.

3 Because of th'enemies voice, and for th'ill mans oppression great:

For on me they iniquity cast, and in wrath me hate,

4 My heart is sore pained within me: and the terrours of death are fallen upon me.

5 Fearfulnesse and trembling are come upon me, and horror hath overwhelmed me.

4 My heart sore pain'd within me is, deaths terrours on me fall's

5 Fear, tremblings on me come, and dread hath overwhelm'd me all.

6 And I said, O that I had wings like a dove: for then would I flee away, and be at rest.

6 And then I said, O like a Dove that I had wings for me,

For then I hence would flee away, and I at rest would be.

7 Lo, then would I wander far off, and remain in the wildernesse. Selah.

8 I would hasten my escape from the windy storm and tempest.

7 Lo, then far off I wander would in wildernesse to be. Selah.

8 From windy storme and tempest I to scape would hasten me.

9 Destroy, O Lord, and divide their tongues: for I have seen violence and strife in the city.

9 Do thou destroy, O Lord, and do divide their tongues in twain,

For violence and strife I have within the city seen.

10 Day and night they go about it upon the wals thereof; mischief also and sorrow are in the midst of it.

10 About it on the walls thereof they day and night do go,

Mischief ev'n in the midst of it and sorrow are also.

11 Wickednesse is in the midst thereof: deceit and guil depart not from her streets.

12 For it was not an enemy that reproached me, then I could have born it:

11 Ill in its midst is; guile deceit from its streets do not go:

12 For not a foe did me reproach, I could have born it so,

Neither was it he that hated me, that did magnifie himself against me, then I would have hid my self from him.

Nor was it he that did me hate, that magnifie thus did

Himself against me, then I would my self have from him hid.

13 But it was thou, a man, mine equall, my guide, and mine acquaintance.

14 We took sweet counsell together, and walked unto the house of God in company.

13 But thou a man mine equall, guide, mine acquaintance it was:

14 We join'd sweet counsell, to Gods house in comp'ny we did passe.

15 Let death seize upon them, and let them go down quick into hell: for wickednesse is in their dwellings, and among them.

14 Let death upon them seize, let them go quick down into hell:

For wickednesse is them among and in the place they dwell.

16 As for me, I will call upon God: and the Lord shall save me

17 Evening, and morning, and at noon will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.

16 On God I'le call, God will me, 17 At morne, noon, evening still,

Both pray I will, and cry aloud, my voice then hear he will.

18 He hath delivered my soul in peace, from the battell that was against me: for there were many with me.

18 He hath my soul delivered, that it in peace might be

From battell that against me was, for many were with me▪

19 God shall hear and afflict them, even he that abideth of old, Selah: because they have no changes, therefore they fear not God.

19 God hear and them afflict shall he of old who hath abode,

Because that they no changes have therefore they fear not God.

20 He hath put forth his hands against such as be at peace with him; he hath broken his covenant.

20 Gainst such he hath put forth his hands as at peace with him be,

The covenant that he hath made now broken all hath he.

21 The words of his mouth were smoother then butter, but war was in his heart: his words were softer then oil. yet were they drawn swords.

21 Then butter smoother were his words but in his heart was war,

His words were softer then the oil, and yet draw'n swords they are.

22 Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.

22 Upon the Lord thy burden cast, and thee sustain shall he:

He surely never suffer shall the righteous mov'd to be.

23 But thou, O God, shalt bring them down into the pit of destruction: bloody and deceitfull men shall not live out half their dayes: but I will trust in thee.

23 Lord thou to deaths pit shalt them bring, deceitfull bloody men

Shall not half of their dayes live out, but I'le trust in thee then.

PSAL. LVI.

BE mercifull unto me, O God, for man would swallow me up: he fighting daily oppresseth me.

BE mercifull to me, O God, for man …ould swallow me,

While he doth daily'gainst me fight, me then oppresseth he.

2 Mine enemies would daily swallow me up: for they be many that fight against me, O thou most high.

2 They daily would me swallow up that enemies are to me;

For, O most high they that do fight against me many be.

3 What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee▪

4 In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust,

3 What time I am afraid, on thee I trusting will rely.

4 In God I'le praise his word, in God my whole trust put have I.

I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.

5 Every day they wrest my words: all their thoughts are against me for evil.

What flesh now can do unto me not fear at all I will;

5 Each day they wrest my words, their thoughts 'gainst me are all for ill.

6 They gather themselves together, they hide themselves, they mark my steps when they wait for my soul.

6 Themselves together gather they, they hide themselves in hate,

They do my steps all mark, when as they for my soul lay wait.

7 Shall they escape by iniquity? in thine anger cast down the people, O God.

7 Shall they ev'n by iniquitie away escape at last?

O Lord down in thine anger now do thou the people cast.

8 Thou tellest my wandrings, put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?

8 My wandrings all what they have been thou tellest at a look,

Into thy bottel put my tears: are they not in thy book?

9 When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know, for God is for me.

10 In God will I praise his word: in the Lord will I praise his word.

9 My foes shall when I cry turn back: I know't; God's for me still:

10 In God his word I'le praise, his word praise in the Lord I will.

11 In God I have put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me.

12 Thy vows are upon me, O God: I will render praises unto thee.

11 I trust in God, not fear I will what man can do to me:

12 Thy vows upon me are, O God I'le render praise to thee.

13 For thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living?

13 For thou hast freed my soul from death, from falls wilt thou not right

My feet save, that I God before may walk in livings light.

PSAL. LVII.

BE mercifull unto me, O God, be mercifull unto me, for my soul trusteth in thee:

BE mercifull to me, O God, be mercifull to me,

And that because my soul it doth her trust put into thee.

Yea in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge untill these calamities be over-past.

Yea, in the shaddow of thy wings I'le my refuge make fast;

Untill that those calamities be wholly overpast.

2 I will cry unto God most high: unto God …hat persormeth all things for me.

2 Unto the Lord that is most high, my cry shall raised be:

Ev'n unto God himself that doth performe all things for me.

3 He shall send from heaven, and save me from the reproch of him that would swallow me up; Selah. God shall send forth his mer and his truth.

… From heaven he shall send, and me from his reproach defend,

That me would swallow; God his truth, and merciemercy forth shall send. Selah.

4 'Mong lions is my soul, I ly men set on fire among,

Mens sons, whose teeth are arrows, spears, and a sharp sword their tongue.

5 Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens: let thy glory be above all the earth.

5 Be thou exalted very high above the heav'ns O God:

And, let thy glory be above ev'n all the earth abroad.

6 They have prepared a not for my steps, … soul is bowed down: they have digged a pit before me, into the midst whereof they are fall themselves. Selah.

6 They for my steps a net prepar'd, my soul is bow'd withall;

They digged have, for me a pit and in its midst did fall. Selah.

7 My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed: I will sing and give praise.

8 Awake up my glory, awake psaltry and harp: I my self will wake early.

7 My heart's Lord fixt, my heart is fixt, I'le praise and singing make:

8 My glorie wake, wake Psaltry, Harp, my self I'le early wake.

9 I will praise thee, O Lord, among the people: I will sing unto thee among the nations.

10 For thy mercy is great unto the heavens, and thy truth unto the clouds.

PSAL. LVIII.

DO ye indeed speak righteousnesse, O congregation? do ye judge uprightly▪ O …sons of men?

DO ye O congregation, indeed speak righteously?

O ye that are the sons of men do ye judge uprightly?

2 Yea, in heart ye work wickednesse: you weigh the violence of your hands in the earth.

2 Ye ev'n within your heart you do work wickednesse alway,

And of your hands upon the earth the violence you weigh.

3 The wicked are estranged from the wom they go astray assoon as they be born, speaking lies.

3 The wicked they are from the womb estranged all from thee;

They speaking lies do go astray as soon as born they be.

4 Their poison is like the poison of a serpent: they are like the deaf adder that stoppeth her ear:

4 Unto a serpents poison like their poison it is near;

They like unto the adder are that deafe doth stop her ear.

5 Which will not hearken to the voice of charmers, charming never so wisely.

5 Which will not hearken to the voice of them they charmers see,

Though never so wisely they appear in charming for to be.

6 Break their teeth, O God, in their mouth: break out the great teeth of the young lions, O Lord.

6 O God, in peices in their mouth break thou their teeth so strong,

The great teeth break thou out, O Lord, of lions that are young.

7 Let them melt away as waters which run continually: when he bendeth his bow to shoo… his arrows, let them be as cut in pieces.

7 Let them as waters melt away continually that flow,

His arrows cut in peices when to shoot he bends his bow.

8 As a snail which melteth, let every one of them passe away: like the untimely birth of a woman, that they may not see the sun.

8 As melts a snail, let ev'ry one of them so passe away,

Like womans birth untimely, that the sun not see they may.

9 Before your pots can feel the thorns, he shall take them away as with a whirlewind, both living, and in his wrath.

9 Before your pots can feel the thornes them take away he shall,

Both living and als in his wrath as with a whirlwinde all.

10 The righteous shall rejoice, when he seeth the vengeance, he shall wash his feet in the bloud of the wicked.

10 The righteous man he shall rejoice when he doth vengeance see,

He shall his feet wash in the bloud of those that wicked be.

11 So that a man shall say, Verily, there is a reward for the righteous: verily, he is a God that judgeth in the earth.

11 So verily a man shall say the just rewarded be:

Yea, verily that in the earth doth judge, a God is he.
