The Psalms of David in Meter, Metrical Psalter · Psalm 78 – Psalm 85
PSAL. LXXVIII.
MY people now attentive ear,
give to my law divine,
And to the words als of my mouth
ſee ye your eares incline.
verse 2 My mouth a parable ſhall ſpeak
and ſayings dark of old,
verse 3 Which we have heard & known, a… wh…
our fathers have us told.
verse 4 We from their children them to …
will not at all accord,
But will ſhew to the race to come
the praiſes of the LORD.
And alſo his moſt glorious ſtrength,
and his works evry one
Which are alwayes moſt wonderfull
that he himſelfe hath done.
For in Jacob a Teſtimonie
he plac'd and fix'd a law
In Iſra'l, and our fathers bad
them make their children know.
That generations yet to come
might know them ev'ry where,
And children unborn who ſhould riſe
and them to theirs declare.
That they always on God might ſet
their hope in dangers deep,
And not forget the work of God,
but his commandments keep.
verse 8 And might not as their fathers be,
who ſtubborn ſtill abode.
Whoſe heart not right was, and whoſe ſprite
not ſtedfaſt was with GOD.
verse 9 All Ephraims children being arm'd
and carying bows not ſlack,
In the day of the battell they
with ſhame did turn their back.
verse 10 They did not keep the cov'nant
of God, nor ſtood in aw,
But ſtubbornly refuſd to walk
in his moſt holy law.
verse 11 And alſo his great works forgot,
not in a number few.
And his great wonders, which he di…
unto them clearely ſhew.
verse 12 Things wondrous in their fathers ſig…
he did by his own hand,
And that even in the Zoan field
in Egypts fertile land.
verse 13 He did divide the ſea, and them
cauſd to paſſe through the deep,
And he alſo the waters made
to ſtand up as an heap.
verse 14 In the day time he alſo them
led with a cloud aright:
And with a light of fire moſt clear
he led them all the night.
verse 15 In the dry barren wilderneſſe
the hardeſt rocks he cl…ave,
And as out of the greateſt depths
unto them drink he gave.
verse 16 He alſo then out of the rock
brought ſtreame by his great might,
And cauſde the waters to run down
like rivers in their ſight.
verse 17 And yet againſt him more they did
by grievous ſins tranſgreſſe:
Yea by provoking the moſt High
to wrath in wilderneſſe.
verse 18 They alſo in their heart profane
did tempt the LORD moſt juſt,
Then ſinned they by asking meat
for their moſt filthie luſt.
verse 19 Yea, they againſt GOD fooliſhly
ſpake with unthankfulneſſe,
Can GOD a table furniſh us
ev'n in the wilderneſſe?
verse 20 The rock he ſmote, loe waters out
guſh'd; ſtreams ov'rflow'd afreſh
Can he give bread alſo? can he
provide his people fleſh?
verse 21 GOD heard this, therefore was … wro…
a fire 'gainſt Jacob ſo
Was kindled, and great wrath came …
againſt Iſral alſo.
verse 22 Becauſe they fooliſh not beleev'd
in GOD, who is moſt juſt;
And als in his ſalvation dear
they faithleſſe did not truſt.
verse 23 Though he moſt mighty from abo…
the clouds with majeſtie
Commanded had, and opned als
the doors of heav'n moſt hie.
verse 24 And down ſweet manna rained …
upon them for to eat:
And alſo had unto them given
the corn of heav'n for meat.
verse 25 Man fed by GOD, ſweet angels fo…
did eat where ev'r he went;
This meat that was exceeding good
he to the full them ſent.
verse 26 He cauſd an Eaſtwind in the hea…
to blow on all the land,
And afterward the South wind he
brought in at his command.
verse 27 On them he rain'd a ſhowr of fleſh
as thick as duſt could be,
And feath'red fowles like as the ſands
which lye along the ſea.
verse 28 And in the midſt als of their camp
in heaps he let it fall,
With great abundance round about
their habitations all.
verse 29 So they did eat and alſo were
well fill'd, as they did crave,
For unto them their owne deſire
in anger then he gave.
verse 30 They were not from their filthie luſt
eſtrang'd while they did eat,
But while within their greedy mouths
contained was their meat.
verse 31 The wrath of God upon them came;
and all the fatteſt ſlew,
And ſmote down the moſt choſen men
of Iſrael not a few.
verse 32 For all this they moſt wickedly
ſtill ſinning did him grieve.
And for his great and wondrous wor…
they did him not believe.
verse 33 Therefore their dayes in vanitie
he from his juſtice ſeat
Then did conſume, and als likewiſe
their years in troubles great.
verse 34 When in his fierce wrath he the… ſle…
they ſought him with deſire,
And they returnd, and after GOD
moſt early did enquire.
verse 35 And they remembred thē that God
their rock was every way.
And als that their redeemer was
the moſt hie GOD alway.
verse 36 Nevertheleſſe, they fooliſh, him
did flatter craftilie
And unto him they with their tongue
moſt falſly then did lie.
verse 37 For their deceitfull heart with him
not ſtable was and right,
Nor yet they in his cov'nant ſtill
were ſtedfaſt and upright.
verse 38 But being of compaſſion full,
their ſins he great and ſmall
Freely forgave, and in his wrath
them not deſtroy'd at all.
Yea many a time in mercy he
his anger turn'd away.
And did not fiercely all his wrath
'gainſt them ſtir up alway.
verse 39 For he remembred that they were
but fleſh that is moſt vain;
A wind that paſſeth ſoon away
and cometh not again.
verse 40 How oft did they provoke him in
the barren wilderneſſe;
And in the deſart alſo him
grieve by their wickedneſſe?
verse 41 Yea to their ſins they turned back
and tempted GOD anone,
And of Iſra'l they limited
the juſt and holy One.
verse 42 They did not his almighty hand
remember thankfully,
Nor yet the day he ſaved them
from the fierce enemy.
verse 43 How he had in ſtrong Egypt lan…
that ſtubborn would not yeeld,
Wrought his great ſignes, and wond…
had done in Zoan field.
verse 44 And how he had by his great pow…
their rivers turn'd in blood,
And ſpoil'd their waters ſo that they
could not drink of their flood.
verse 45 He diverſe ſorts of flies did ſend
among them to devore,
And filthy frogs which them alſo
deſtroyed more and more.
verse 46 Unto the Caterpillar he
gave likwiſe their increaſe,
And to the greedy locuſt als
their labour more and leſſe.
verse 47 By hail which with great weight … do…
their vines deſtroy'd were loſt,
And their moſt pleaſant Sycomores
were withred all with froſt.
verse 48 He to the hail which fearfull was,
gave up their cattell all,
And flocks unto the thunder bolts
which hote on them did fall.
verse 49 His fierce wrath & his anger great
upon them he did caſt,
By ſending Angels that were ill
among them at the laſt.
verse 50 He to his anger making way
ſpar'd not their ſouls from death,
But to the Peſtilence gave ov'r
their life in his great wrath.
verse 51 And he in Egypt alſo ſmot
the firſt-borne all rhat came;
The chief of all their ſtrength that were
in all the tents of Ham.
verse 52 But his own people made go forth,
like ſheep on evry ſide:
And them he in the wilderneſſe
ev'n like a flock did guide.
verse 53 And he them ſafely ſtill led on,
ſo that they did not fear.
But then the ſea their enemies all
ov'rwhelmed far and near.
verse 54 His Sanctuaries border neer
he them brought by his might,
Ev'n to the Mount which his right ha…
hath purchaſd in their ſight.
verse 55 The heathen als before them he
caſt out on evry ſide,
And them a large inheritance
by line he did divide.
And alſo he all Iſraels Tribes
made ev'n exceeding well,
In numbers great within their rents
in ſafety for to dwell.
verse 56 Yet the moſt High GOD did th… tempt…
and him provoked ſtill:
His Teſtimonies of great worth
to keep they had not will.
verse 57 But like their fathers turned back
and dealt unfaithfullie;
They like a moſt deceitfull bow▪
were turn'd aſide quicklie.
verse 58 For they to wrath provoked him,
ev'n with their places hie,
And with their graven images
him mov'd to jealouſie.
verse 59 When GOD this heard, he at the laſt
was wroth with them therefore;
And greatly then diſpleaſed he
his Iſrael did abhorre.
verse 60 So that of Shilo he forſook
the Tabernacle then,
The tent even of his dwelling place
which he plac'd among men,
verse 61 And he into captivity
deliv'red then his ſtrength,
And als unto the en'mies hand
his glory all at length.
verse 62 His people alſo to the ſword
he gave ov'r to be ſlain,
And als with his inheritance
was wroth in great diſdain.
verse 63 The fire of Gods wrath did conſ…
of younger age their men;
Their maidens als did ſit at home,
not unto mariage given.
verse 64 Their Prieſts alſo ev'n by the ſwo…
moſt fearfully did fall;
And yet no lamentation then
their widows made at all.
verse 65 Then as one out of ſleep the LOR…
awak'd with ſtrength divine,
And like a mighty man that ſhouts
by reaſon of his wine.
verse 66 And he ſmote In the hinder pa…
his enmies great and ſmall,
He put them to a vile reproach
that was perpetuall.
verse 67 Moreover he the tabernacle
of Joſeph did refuſe,
And als the tribe of Ephraim
he likewiſe would not chuſe,
verse 68 But of Judah he only choſe
the tribe for to excell;
And for his worſhip mount Sion
which he did love ſo well.
verse 69 And he his Sanctuary built
like Palaces moſt hie;
Even like the earth which he for ay
hath ſtabliſh'd ſtill to be.
verse 70 He his dear ſervant David choſe,
while others he forſook,
From the ſheep folds in low eſtate
he him in mercy took.
verse 71 From following ews even great with young,
he did him high advance
Jacob to feed, and Iſrael
his own inheritance.
verse 72 So he them fed according to
his hearts integritie,
And by the skilfulneſſe of hands
them wiſely guided he.
PSAL. LXXIX.
O GOD, the heathen entred are,
thine heritage down tread,
Thy houſe defil'd is, they on heaps
Jeruſalem have laid.
verse 2 The bodies of thy ſervants dead
have they given to be meat
Unto the fowls fleſh of thy Saints
to beaſts on earth to eat.
verse 3 Their blood about Jeruſalem
like water ſhed they have;
And there was none left in that plac…
to bury them in grave.
verse 4 We to our neighbours a reproach
are made both neer and far,
A ſcorn deriſion unto them
that round about us are,
verse 5 How long Lord wilt thou angry be
for ever ſhall thine ire
Be kindled? Shall thy jealouſie
burn fearfully like fire?
verse 6 On heathē that have not thee kno…
powre out thy wrath anone,
And on the kingdomes all that have
not call'd thy Name upon.
verse 7 For they thy ſervant Jacob have
devour'd with great diſgrace,
And have moſt cruelly laid waſt
his pleaſant dwelling place.
Remember not our former ſins:
thy tender mercies now
…t them prevent us ſpeedilie,
for we are very low.
O God our Saviour, for thy Names
great glorie help us make,
…eliver us and purge away
our ſins for thy names ſake.
Why ſhould the heathen ſay, where is
their God? Let him be known
…y juſt revenging in our ſight
the blood ſhed of thine own.
verse 11 According to thy power ſo great,
now let come unto thee
…he priſoners ſighs; ſave thoſe that are
appointed for to die,
verse 12 Into our neighbours boſome let
ſeven fold now rendred be,
Their vile reproch wherewith O Lord
they have reproched thee.
verse 13 So wee the people and the ſheep
ev'n of thy paſture ſtill
Will give thee thankes: to ages all
thy praiſe ſhew foorth we will.
PSAL. LXXX.
O Iſral's ſheepherd, give thou ea…
that Joſeph that is thine
Lead'ſt like a ſlock; from Cherubims
thy dwelling place forth ſhine.
verse 2 Ephraim Benjamin before
and Manaſſes we crave,
That thou would'ſt now ſtirre up th… ſtrengt…
and come us for to ſave.
verse 3 Turn us again, O GOD, moſt dear,
and cauſe thy face from thee
Moſt brightly for to ſhine on us,
and we ſhall ſaved be.
verse 4 LORD GOD of hoſts, how long wi… tho…
thus always angry be
Againſt the prayer which in grief
thy people make to thee?
verse 5 Thou alwayes feedſt them with th… brea…
of teares that makes them ſhrink,
And in a meaſure great alſo
thou giv'ſt them teares to drink.
Thou likewiſe to our neighbours all
makes us to be a ſtrife,
…nd all our foes among themſelves
laugh at our wretched life.
Turn us again, O GOD, of hoſtes,
and cauſe thy face from thee
…oſt brightly for to ſhine on us,
and we ſhall ſaved be.
By thy great ſtrength thou haſt a Vine
brought out of Egypt land,
…hou haſt caſt out the heathen folk
to plant it with thy hand,
A roome thou alſo it before
prepard'ſt by thy good will.
…nd didſt it cauſe to take deep root,
and it the land did fill.
verse 10 With ſhadows of it all the hills
were cov'red pleaſantlie,
And the green boughs thereof were like
the goodly Cedars hie.
verse 11 Her pleaſant boughs unto the ſea
ſhe gloriouſly did ſend,
And als unto the river large
her branches did extend.
verse 12 Why haſt thou then thus brokē do…
her hedges heer and there,
So that all they that ſtill paſſe by
do pluck, and make her bare?
verse 13 The Boare that comes out of …
doth waſt it more and more,
And als the wild beaſts of the field
it greedily devoure.
verse 14 O God of Hoſts, we thee beſeec…
returne now unto thine,
From heav'n look down, and now wh… hol…
and viſite this thy vine.
verse 15 And the vineyard which thy rig… han…
hath planted us among,
And als the branch that for thy ſelf
th…u madeſt to be ſtrong.
verse 16 it is all burnt with fire, it is
cut downe with great diſgrace
…hey periſh all at the rebuke
of thy diſpleaſed face.
verse 17 Upon the man of thy right hand
let thy hand ever be,
…pon the ſon of man whom thou
madſt ſtrong alwayes for thee.
verse 18 So will not we at any time
go back from thee at all,
… quicken us, and we always
upon thy Name will call.
O Lord, who art the God of Hoſts
turn us again to thee;
…y pleaſant face cauſe thou to ſhine,
and we ſhall ſaved be.
PSAL. LXXXI.
O God who is our only ſtrength,
aloud ſing with your voice,
…d to the God of Jacob great,
make ye a joyfull noiſe.
Take ye a Pſalme, and hither als
bring for great melodie
…e Timbrell and the pleaſant Harp,
with the ſweet Pſalterie.
verse 3 In the new Moon blow up alſo
the Trumpet for to play,
In the fit time appointed on
our feaſt and ſolemne day.
verse 4 For this for Iſrael all was made,
a ſtatute to endure.
And of the God of Jacob great,
a Law moſt firme and ſure.
verse 5 This he ordaind in Joſeph for
a teſtimonie good,
When he throgh Egypt went; wh…
heard words not underſtood.
verse 6 His ſhoulder from the burdens
I then removed far;
And alſo from the pots by me
his hands deliv'red were.
verse 7 Thou call'dſt in trouble, I thee …
I anſwerd thee thus mov'd
In ſecret place of thunder; I
at Meribah thee prov'd.
verse 8 Hear O my people, and to thee
now teſtifie I will,
O Iſra'l if thou with thy heart
wilt hearken to me ſtill.
verse 9 There ſhal no ſtrange or heathen god
for ever be in thee.
…or any God thou worſhip ſhalt,
that ſtrange is known to be.
I am the Lord thy God which broght
thee out of Egypt land;
…hy mouth now open wide, and I
will fill it with my hand.
But oh my people to my voice
would not obedient be,
…nd Iſra'l als whom I did chooſe
yet would have none of me.
So I them then gave up unto
the luſt of their own heart,
…d they in all their counſells ill
did walk in ev'ry part.
O that my people unto me
had hearkned in their dayes,
…nd Iſrael with an upright heart
had walked in my wayes!
verse 14 I ſhould have ſoon their enmies …
ſubdu'd that them withſtand,
And 'gainſt their adverſaries I
ſhould ſoon have turn'd my hand.
verse 15 Who hate the Lord themſelves ſh…
ſubmitted him before,
But their time ſurely ſhould have … ha…
endur'd for evermore.
verse 16 He with the fineſt of the wheat
ſhould have fed them his flock,
And I thee ſhould have ſatiſfi'd,
with honie from the rock.
PSAL. LXXXII.
GOD in the congregation ſtan…
of them that mighty be,
He als among the lower Gods
doth judge moſt righteouſlie.
verse 2 How long will yee unjuſtly ſtill
thus judge, and right reject,
And perſons of the wicked men
accept with ſuch reſpect?
verse 3 Defend thoſe whom poor in the …
and fatherleſſe yee ſee,
To the afflicted juſtice doe,
and thoſe that needy be.
verse 4 Deliver now thoſe that are poore,
and needy in the land:
With care and diligence them rid
out of the wickeds hand.
They know not, nor wil underſtand,
in darkneſſe they walk on:
All the foundations of the earth
now out of courſe are gone:
verse 6 I have thus ſaid, that ye are gods
who ſit in dignitie,
And that of him who is moſt High,
you all the children be.
verse 7 But like all other mortall men
at laſt heer die ye ſhall,
And like one of the Princes ye
aſſuredly ſhall fall.
verse 8 To judge the earth with judgement juſt
ariſe, O GOD, of might,
For thou all Nations every where
inherit ſhalt by right.
PSALME LXXXIII.
KEep not thou ſilence in this time
O GOD, in thy good will:
Hold not thy peace O God at all,
and be not ever ſtill
verse 2 For lo thine enmies all moſt ſtrong
a tumult make indeed,
And they that wickedly thee hate
have now lift up the head.
verse 3 They crafty counſell taken have
againſt thy people ſmall:
Againſt the poor and hidden ones,
conſulted have they all.
verse 4 Come let us cut this nation off,
they have ſaid ſpight fullie,
That Iſraels name no more at all
may in remembrance be.
verse 5 For they together have with one
conſent conſulted all.
Confederate ſtill they alwayes are
againſt thee great and ſmall
verse 6 The Tabernacles of Edom
and Iſhmaelites in war,
Of Moab and the Hagarens
combined with them were.
verse 7 Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek
all joyn'd in one deſire;
The Philiſtims, with them were als
th' inhabitants of Tyre.
verse 8 Aſſur in armes with them alwayes
is join'd in wicked plot,
They by their force have holpen much
the children als of Lot.
verse 9 Do unto them even as thou didſt
to Midianites eachone:
to Sifera and Jabin als,
at the brook or Kiſhon.
verse 10 Which periſh did in number great
at Endor ſuddenly;
There they unburi'd, for the earth
were made as dung to be.
verse 11 Like Oreb and like Zeeb als
their nobles make to fall,
Yea, as Zebah and Zalmunnah
make thou their Princes all.
verse 12 Who ſaid, in proud and lofty wor…
let us Gods houſes take,
And them all by our mightie hand,
our own poſſeſſion make.
verse 13 O my GOD like a rolling wheele
make them thy force to find,
Yea, as dry ſtubble that is driven,
before a mightie wind;
verse 14 Ev'n as a fire upon the earth
a wood burns ſpeedilie.
And as the flame doth ſet on fire
the mountaines that are hie.
verse 15 So with thy tempeſt perſecute
them whom ſuch faults deforme
And make them greatly all afraide
with thy moſt fearfull ſtorme.
verse 16 With great diſgrace their faces
all cov'red ov'r with ſhame;
That by this means they with their he…
may ſeeke, O LORD, thy Name,
verse 17 Let them alſo confounded be
and troubled ev'n for ever,
Yea let them be put unto ſhame.
and periſh altogether.
verse 18 That men may know that thou, whoſe Name
JEHOVAH is alone,
Art the moſt High, even over all
that are the earth upon.
PSAL. LXXXIIII.
O Thou who art the Lord of hoſts
how amiable are,
Thy Tabernacles unto me
removed now ſo ſarre!
verse 2 My ſoul doth long, yea ev'n doth faint
in the LORDS courts to be
My heart and fleſh do cry out for
the living GOD moſt hie.
verse 3 Yea, ev'n the ſparrow hath well found
an houſe wherein to reſt,
And als the ſwallow for herſelf
hath likewiſe found a neſt;
Ev'n thine Altars where ſhe her young
may lay, and als upbring,
O Lord of Hoſts, who art my GOD
and my moſt mighty King
verse 4 They bleſſed are that in thy houſe
do dwell with thy good will,
For they with glad and joyfull hea…
will thee be praiſing ſtill.
verse 5 Moſt bleſſed is the man whoſe ſtreg…
is wholly plac'd in thee,
In whoſe heart ever are the wayes
of them that holy be.
verse 6 Who through the valley of Bac…
in numbers paſſing ſtill,
With labour great make it a well,
the rain the pools doth fill.
verse 7 Unweari'd they from ſtrength ſtren…
go daily more and more;
In Zion ev'ry one of them
appeareth GOD before.
verse 8 O Lord, who art the God of …
my prayer quickly hear,
Thou who of Jacob art the God,
conſider and give ear.
verse 9 Behold, O God who truely art
our ſhield in ev'ry place,
And of thine own Anointed dear,
now look upon the face.
verse 10 For one day thy fair courts within
to ſerve thee with our heart,
Is better then a thouſand more
in any other part:
A door keeper I rather had
in Gods houſe alwayes be,
Then in the tents of wickedneſſe,
to dwell with honours hie.
verse 11 For God is both a Sun and Shield,
he'le glory give and grace,
He nought withholds from them that walk
uprightly in their place.
verse 12 O thou that art the LORD of hoſts
the man moſt certainlie,
Is ever bleſſed in his wayes
that truſteth ſtill in thee.
PSAL. LXXXV.
THou fav'rable O LORD haſt been,
unto thy land we ſee,
Of Jacob now brought back thou haſt
the long captivitie.
verse 2 Thou of thy people haſt forgiven
the great iniquitie,
In thy great merciemercy all their ſin
hath covered been by thee.
verse 4 In mercy thou thy fearfull wrath
haſt taken all away,
Thou from thine angers fiercenes g…
haſt turn'd thy ſelf alway.
verse 4 O GOD of our ſalvation now,
turne us thee for to pleaſe,
And cauſe thine anger at the laſt
now towards us to ceaſe.
verse 5 Wilt thou for ever angry be
with us thy people ſmall?
Wilt thou alſo thy wrath draw out
to generations all?
verse 6 Wilt thou not now revive againe
us who diſtreſſed be?
That thy afflicted people may
alwaies rejoice in thee.
verse 7 Thy great merciemercy O LORD alwa…
ſhew to us in our place,
And alſo thy ſalvation dear
now grant us by thy grace.
verse 8 What God wil ſpeak I'le hear, for to
his ſaints and people plain
He will ſpeak peace; but let them not
to foly turn again.
verse 9 Surely his great ſalvation is
moſt nigh to to them at hand
That fear him, ſo that glory may
dwell ſtedfaſt in our land.
verse 10 Both mercy now and alſo truth
are joyntly met together,
And righteouſneſſe and peace alſo
have each one kiſſed other.
verse 11 Out of the earth truth pleaſantly
ſhall ſpring it for to crown,
And righteouſneſſe with Majeſtie
ſhall from the heaven look down.
verse 12 Yea, what is good, the Lord above
ſhall give it with his hand,
And her increaſe moſt plentifull
yeeld ſhall our fertile land.
verse 13 Then righteouſnes moſt gravely …
before him go alway,
And of his ſteps which never fail
ſhall ſet us in the way.
