The Psalms of David in Meter, Metrical Psalter · Psalm 132 – Psalm 146
PSAL. CXXXII.
NOw David and his troubles, Lord
remember, and him ſpare:
How to the Lord ev'n Jacobs God
he vow'd and alſo ſware.
I ſurely to the Tabernacle
of my houſe will not go,
Nor yet to get my reſt and eaſe
go up my bed into.
verse 4 I ſurely henceforth will not give
unto mine eyes a ſleep
Or yet a ſlumber ſuffer will
on mine eye-lids to creep,
verse 5 Untill I find out for the LORD
a place to make abode,
An habitation well prepar'd
for Jacobs mighty GOD.
verse 6 Lo we of it at Ephrata
heard, which wertidings good
We happily it alſo found
in the fields of the wood.
verse 7 Into his Tabernacles fair
moſt gladly will we go,
With great reſpect we worſhip wi…
at his footſtool alſo.
verse 8 A riſe, O LORD, moſt ſpeedily
into thy reſt at length,
Thou who art great in Majeſty.
and the Ark of thy ſtrength.
Now let thy Prieſts with righteouſnes
be cloathed all about,
…nd let all them that are thy ſaints
for joy moſt gladly ſhout.
For thine own ſervant Davids ſake
whom thou doſt love alway,
… thine anointed dear to thee
turn not the face away.
God hath to David ſworn in truth,
not turne he will from it,
…f the fruit of thy body I
upon thy Throne will ſet,
If thy children my Covenant Keep
and Teſtimonie all,
…pon thy Throne for ever ſit
their children alſo ſhall.
For GOD hath Zion chuſde, and it
to dwell in ſtill requir'd:
Heere reſt I ever will, heer dwell,
for I have it deſir'd.
I will all her proviſion bleſſe
abundantly indeed,
Her poor and needy now will I
well ſatisfie with bread.
verse 16 I with ſalvation will alſo
her Prieſts all cloath about,
And all her Saints that fear the Lord
for joy aloud ſhall ſhout.
verse 17 There I will make King David horn
to bud in all mens ſight:
I have for mine anointed dear
ordain'd a lamp of light.
verse 18 His enmies alſo I will cloath
with ſhame, till they look down,
But on himſelf moſt brightly ſtill
even flouriſh ſhall his crown.
PSAL. CXXXIII.
BEhold how good a thing it is,
and pleaſant for to ſee,
That brethren ſhould together dwell
in peace and unitie.
verse 2 Like precious ointment on the hea…
that on the beard did fall,
Ev'n Aarons beard, that to the skirts
went of his garments all.
…'n Aarons beard, who was a man
by GOD almighty ſent,
…t down from thence unto the skirts
of all his garments went.
…ike Hermons dew, like dew which down
the Zions hills ran o're,
… there the bleſſing God ordain'd;
ev'n life for evermore.
PSAL. CXXXIV.
…Ehold, and bleſſe the Lord all ye
that ſerve the LORD aright,
…ich in the houſe of God the Lord
to ſerve him ſtand by night.
Your hands lift in the Sanctuary,
and bleſſ the Lord in this:
The Lord that made the heav'n and earth
thee out of Zion bleſſe.
PSAL. CXXXV.
…Raiſe ye the Lord, praiſe ye alſo
his Name with one accord,
…aiſe him with heart and voice, O ye
the ſervants of the Lord.
Ye that in the houſe of the Lord
to ſerve him always ſtand,
Ev'n in the fair courts of the houſe
of our God in the land.
verse 3 Praiſe ye the Lord, for he is good,
moſt hearty praiſes ſing
Unto his bleſſed Name alwayes,
for it's a pleaſant thing.
verse 4 For that the Lord unto himſelf
hath of his own good pleaſure
Ev'n choſen Jacob and Iſra'l
for his peculiar treaſure.
verse 5 For I know that aſſuredly
the Lord is always great,
And that our God above all gods
is in a glorious ſeat.
verse 6 What thing ſo ev'r the Lord did plea…
that in the heav'ns did he
And in the earth, in ſeas, and all
deep places that there be.
verse 7 He from the ends of all the earth
makes vapours to aſcend,
For raine he lightnings makes; he doth
winds from his treaſures ſend,
verse 8 Who to great wrath provoked much
by men of Egypt land,
Their firſt-born ſmot of man and beaſt
with a deſtroying hand.
Who tokens ſent, & wonders which
in midſt of thee did fall,
Egypt: upon Pharaoh,
and on his ſervants all.
verse 10 Who in great wrath by his ſtrong hand,
the Maker of all things
…not nations great with fearful plagus
and als ſlew mighty kings.
verse 11 Sihon king of the Amorites,
and Og of Baſhan ſtrong,
…nd all the kingdomes that were then
the Cananits among.
verse 12 And for a pleaſant heritage
he with a liberall hand
An heritage to Iſrael
his people, gave their land.
verse 13 For ever, Lord, thy Name endures,
and thy memoriall,
O Lord, ev'n conſtantly througho…
the generations all.
verse 14 For ſure the Lord his people al…
will judge in favour ſtill:
Concerning all his ſervants dear
repent himſelf he will.
verse 15 The heathens idols, ſilver, gold,
works of mens hands they be:
verse 16 They have mouths but they do n… ſpea…
and eyes but they not ſee.
verse 17 They have alſo their formed ear…
wherewith they cannot hear,
Nor yet doth any breath at all
once in their mouthes appear.
verse 18 They that moſt fooliſh make the… …
like unto them at length,
Even ſo is every brutiſh one
that truſteth in their ſtrength.
verse 19 Bleſſe thou, O houſe of Iſrael,
the LORD in ev'ry part.
O houſe of Aaron alſo bleſſe
the LORD with all thy heart.
verse 20 O houſe of Levi bleſſe the Lord,
all ye both more and leſſe
That fear the Lord, with all your heart
the Lord for ever bleſſe.
verse 21 Out of Zion for evermore
the Lord God bleſſed be,
Which dwelleth at Jeruſalem;
the Lord always praiſe ye.
PSAL. CXXXVI.

For his mercy
Which is moſt ſure,
Doth ſtill endure

Give hearty thanks anone,
verse 4 To him who by his words
Great wonders doth alone.

Did make the heavens to move
verse 6 And ſtretch'd the earth to be,
The waters great above.
For his mercy
Which is moſt ſure,
Doth ſtill endure
Eternally.
verse 7 To him that by his might
Made great lights ſhine alway,
verse 8 The Sun that is moſt bright,
To rule the pleaſant day.
For his mercy
Which is moſt ſure,
Doth ſtill endure
Eternally.
verse 9 The Moon he made alſo
And gliſtring Stars with light,
In their right courſe to go,
To rule the darkeſt night.
For his mercy
Which is moſt ſure,
Doth ſtill endure

verse 10 To him that mighty ſmote
Egypt a land forlorn,
Who by his anger hote
Did kill all their firſtborn.
For his mercy
Which is moſt ſure,
Doth ſtill endure

verse 11 And brought out from that land
His Iſrael without harme,
verse 12 With a moſt mighty hand,
And with a ſtretched arme.
For his mercy
Which is moſt ſure,
Doth ſtill endure
Eternally.
verse 13 To him which did divide
The red Sea into two,
verse 14 And did his Iſra'l guide,
Through its great deeps alſo.
For his mercy
Which is moſt ſure,
Doth ſtill endure

In midſt of the red ſea.
For his mercy
Which is moſt ſure,
Doth ſtill endure
Eternally.
verse 16 Who als his people dear
Led through the wilderneſſe,

And always righteous,
By his great power ſlew
Kings great that were famous.

The Amorites among,
verse 20 And Og of Baſhan King,
A gyant tall and ſtrong.

Their fertile land he gave,

PSAL. CXXXVII.
OF Babylon the rivers by
there ſate we down together
Yea we did weep all troubled, when
we Zion did remember.
verse 2 On willows then we hang'd our harps
in midſt thereof along:
For there they that us captive led
requir'd of us a ſong;
And they that always waſted us
did mirth of us require,
Sing us, ſaid they, one of the ſongs
of Zion, we deſire.
verse 4 How ſhal we all thus fill'd with grief,
ſuch things now take in hand,
As gladly the LORDS ſong to ſing
in a ſtrange forrain land?
verse 5 But O Jeruſalem, if I
forget thee, alſo let
My right hand well addreſt to play
her cunning quite forget.
verse 6 If I do not remember thee
as long as I ſhall live,
Then to the roof ſtill of my mouth
let my tongue ever cleave.
If I not dear Jeruſalem,
with a moſt hearty love
Be carefull ever to prefer
my chiefeſt joy above.
verse 7 Remember Edoms children, LORD
who ſaid, in Salems day,
Raze it to the foundation all,
yea raze it quite away.
verse 8 O Babels daughter, who deſtroy'd
ſhall all be, happy he
That as thou haſt ill ſerved us,
likewiſe rewardeth thee.
verse 9 Moſt happy ſhall he be alwayes
that takes thy little ones,
And them, without compaſſion all,
doth daſh againſt the ſtones,
PSAL. CXXXVIII.
WIth my whole heart moſt thankfully
thee always praiſe I wil,
Before the gods I will alſo
ſing praiſe unto thee ſtill,
verse 2 Thy holy Temple towards I
to worſhip now will go,
And for thy kindnes praiſe thy Name,
and for thy truth alſo.
For thou who ever art moſt true,
and ſtedfaſt in thy love:
Haſt highly magnifi'd thy word,
even all thy Name above.
verse 3 When in the day of troubles I
did cry, thou anſwer'dſt me,
And alſo with ſtrength in my ſoul
thou didſt well ſtrengthen me.
verse 4 The kings all of the earth below
ſhall then of thee praiſe, O LORD,
When they of thy moſt bleſſed mouth
ſhall hear the lively word,
verse 5 Yea in the wayes they of the Lord
ſhall alwayes ſurely ſing,
For great indeed the glory is
of the Lord GOD our King.
verse 6 Though God by high, yet ſtil he hath
to humble men and low
A great reſpect; as for the proud
a farre he them doth know.
verse 7 Though I in midſt of trouble walk,
I from thee life ſhall have
Gainſt my foes wrath thou'lt ſtretch th… hand
thy right hand ſhall me ſave.
verse 8 GOD will perfite what me concerns,
for ay thy mercy ſtands,
O LORD, in wrath forſake not now
the works of thine own hands.
PSAL. CXXXIX.
O Lord, by thy alſearching ſprit
thou haſt now ſearched me;
And thou to whom nothing is hid
haſt known me perfectlie.
verse 2 My ſitting down, and riſing up
thou knows well what they are,
Thou alſo well doſt underſtand
my ſecret thoughts a farre.
verse 3 My path and als my lying down
thou compaſſeſt alwayes,
And perfectly acquainted art
with all my works and wayes.
verse 4 For in my tongue while I do ſpeak
ther's ſurely not a word,
But lo it altogether is
well known to thee, O LORD,
verse 5 Thou in great wrath haſt me beſet
behinde and als before:
And thou haſt laid thy heavy hand
upon me troubled ſore.
verse 6 Such knowledge is too wonderfull
to me where I remaine,
It ſurely is ſo high that I
to it cannot attaine.
verse 7 O whether from thy ſprit ſhall I
go there hid for to be?
Or whether for to ſave me from
thy preſence, ſhall I flie?
verse 8 If I aſcend up into heaven,
thou there art as elſewhere:
If I do make my bed in hell,
behold thou als art there.
verse 9 If of the morning I the wings
take for my ſelf to hide,
And dwell even in the utmoſt parts
that lie the ſea beſide.
verse 10 Even notwithſtanding ſhal thy ha…
there lead me at the laſt,
And thy right hand that's ful of ſtrēgt…
ſhall hold me ever faſt,
verse 11 If I thus ſay the darkneſſe black
ſhall ſurely cover me:
The night, that ſeems to be moſt dar…
ſhall light about me be.
verse 12 Yea darknes hideth not from the…
but night doth ſhine as day,
The darkneſſe and the light are both
alike to thee alway.
verse 13 For ſurely thou poſſeſſed haſt
my reins moſt ſecretlie;
Thou likewiſe in my mothers womb
haſt ſafely cov'red me.
verse 14 I will thee praiſe, for fearfully
and ſtrangely made I am,
Thy works are marv'lous, and my …
right well doth know the ſame.
verse 15 My ſubſtance when in ſecret I
was made, was known to thee,
And in the loweſt parts of earth
was wrought moſt curiouſlie.
verse 16 Thine eyes did ſee my ſubſtance all,
while it was unperfite,
And in thy ſacred book thou didſt
even all my members write,
Which in continuance by thine hand
were faſhion'd great and ſmall,
When as yet there was none of them
that being had at all.
verse 17 How precious alſo are, O GOD,
to me thy thoughts ſo rare I
How great is the moſt numbrous ſum
of them, who can declare?
verse 18 If I ſhould count, then the ſand
they moe in number be,
And whenſoever I awake,
lo I am ſtill with thee.
verse 19 O GOD, thou wilt them ſurely ſlay
that wicked be in heart,
Therefore ye bloody men away
now far from me depart.
verse 20 For they againſt thee wickedly
do ſpeak as men profane,
Thy foes als with blaſphemous mouth…
do take thy Name in vain.
verse 21 O LORD do I not hate them all
that thee hate and deſpiſe?
And am I not als griev'd with thoſe
that up againſt thee riſe?
verse 22 With perfect hatred I them hate,
and count them ſtill my foes:
verse 23 Search me, & know my heart, me …
my thoughts know and diſcloſe.
verse 24 And ſee if any wicked way
at all there in me be,
And in the everlaſting way
for ever lead thou me.
PSAL. CXL.
FRom the ill man deliver me,
O LORD, whom I do ſerve,
Even from the man that's violent,
now ſafely me preſerve.
verse 2 Which in their wicked harts miſchi…
imagine daylie dar:
Together are they gathred all
continually for war.
verse 3 They ſharpned have their wicked tongues
like ſerpents ſet on ill:
Under their moſt blaſphemous lips
is adders poiſon ſtill.
verse 4 O Lord, now from the wickeds hands
and from the man me ſave
That's violent; who to ov'rthrow
my goings purpoſd have.
verse 5 The proud for me a ſnare have hid,
and cords; yea and a net
By the way ſide they als have ſpread;
they grins have for me ſet.
verse 6 I ſaid unto the LORD, Thou art
my GOD to me moſt dear:
LORD, of my ſupplications all
the humble voice now hear.
verse 7 O God of my ſalvation dear,
the ſtrength in time of need,
Thou in the day of battel haſt
moſt ſafely covr'd my head.
verse 8 LORD, of the wicked his deſires
grant not as free of fault:
Nor further thou his ill device,
leſt they themſelves exalt.
verse 9 As for the head of all thoſe men
about that compaſſe me,
With the miſchief of their own lips
let them ſtill cov'red be.
verse 10 Let burning coals upon them fall
let them with great diſdaine,
Be caſt in fire, and in deep pits,
that they riſe not again.
verse 11 Let not an evill ſpeaker be
eſtabliſh'd heer below:
Ill ſtill the violent man ſhall hunt,
him for to overthrow.
verse 12 I know that God the Lord moſt j…
maintain will ever ſure
The cauſe of the afflicted men,
and the right of the poor.
verse 13 The righteous ſurely to thy Name
that greatly doth excell
Shall give great thanks: the upright man
ſhal in thy preſence dwel.
PSAL. CXLI.
LOrd, from my heart to thee I cry,
make haſte now unto me,
Give ear unto my humble voice,
when I cry unto thee.
verse 2 Let now my prayer be ſet foorth
as incenſe before thee:
As th' evening ſacrifice ſo let
my hands uplifting be.
verse 3 O LORD in mercy ſet a watch
alwayes my mouth before,
And that I faile not with my tongue,
keep of my lips the doore.
verse 4 My heart incline not unto ill
with men that think it meet
To work miſchief, and let me not
of all their dainties eat.
verse 5 But let the righteous man me ſmite,
it ſhall a kindneſſe be,
Let him reprove me, it ſhall ſeeme
a precious oyle to me.
Which being ſoft ſhall not at all
my head break any way:
For yet in their calamities
I will moſt ſurely pray.
verse 6 When overthrown their Judges a…
in ſtony places meet.
They ſurely then ſhall hear my word
for they are very ſweet.
verse 7 At the graves mouth with great co… tem…
our bones are ſcattred all
As when on earth one cutteth wood,
and cleaves in pieces ſmall.
verse 8 But unto thee, O God, the Lord
mine eyes directed be,
My ſoul leave thou not deſtitute,
my truſt is ſtill in thee.
verse 9 Keep me ſure from the craftie ſnare
which they have laid for me,
And alſo from the grinnes of thoſe
that work iniquitie.
verse 10 Into their own nets ſpeedily
let all the wicked fall,
…hile as by thy great providence
that I eſcape withall.
PSAL. CXLII.
VNtoUnto the LORD I with my voice
moſt fervently did cry,
…y ſupplication to the LORD,
even with my voice made I.
Before him then my great complaint
I powr'd out more and more,
…y trouble which me greeved much
I ſhewed him before.
When thus my ſprite o'rewhelmed was
my path was known to thee,
…hey in my way moſt privily
have laid a ſnare for me.
On my right hand I looked, and
beheld, but ſurely there
…one would me know, refuge me faild
none for my ſoul did care.
verse 5 I unto thee, O LORD, did cry,
I ſaid unto thee then,
My portion and refuge thou art
in land of living men.
verse 6 Since I am brought down very lo…
attend unto my cry.
Me from my perſecutors ſave
who ſtronger are then I.
verse 7 My ſoul from priſon bring, that I
may praiſe thy Name moſt hie,
The juſt me compaſſe ſhall; for tho…
ſhalt ſtill deal well with me.
PSAL. CXLIII.
MY prayer and ſupplications Lor…
hear; in thy faithfulneſſe
An anſwere give thou unto me,
and in thy righteouſneſſe.
verse 2 And with thy ſervant enter not
in judgement fearfullie.
For juſtified in thy ſight
no living man ſhall be.
verse 3 For th'enmy fierce my troubled ſou…
with great debate and ſtrife
Hath perſecuted; down to ground
he ſmitten hath my life:
In blackeſt darkneſſe for to dwell
he hath me made alſo:
…s thoſe who lying in their graves
have dead been long ago.
Therefore my ſprite is overwhelm'd
within me fearfullie,
…y heart alſo with trouble great
is deſolate in me.
The dayes of old remember I,
on all thy works I uſe
… meditate: yea on the work
done by thy hands I muſe.
I unto thee ſtretch foorth my hands,
my weari'd ſoul in me
…oſt like a dry and thirſtie land
ſtill thirſteth after thee.
verse 7 Lord, hear with ſpeed my ſprite doth fail
hide not thy face from me,
…eſt like unto them that go down
into the pit I be.
Thy kindneſſe which moſt loving is
at morning cauſe me hear,
…o give me comfort, for I truſt
in thee my GOD moſt dear:
Shew me thy way to walk, for I
lift up my ſoul to thee:
verse 9 From foes me ſave, Lord, me to hide
unto thee do I flie.
verse 10 Teach me to do thy will, for thou
my God art ſtill indeed,
Thy ſprite is good: Of uprightneſſe
into the land me lead.
verse 11 Lord, for thy names ſake quicken …
and for thy righteouſneſſe
Now bring my ſoul afflicted ſore
from trouble and diſtreſſe.
verse 12 Of thy mercy cut off my foes,
them all deſtroy with ſhame
That do afflict my troubled ſoul,
for I thy ſervant am.
PSAL. CXLIIII.
BLeſt be the Lord my only ſtrength
which ſtill my hands with might
Doth teach to war, and alſo makes
my fingers for to fight.
verse 2 My goodnes, fortres, tower & ſhield,
and deliv'rer is he,
In him I truſt, who doth ſubdue
my people under me.
What is man, Lord, that thou of him
ſo baſe, doſt knowledge take?
Or yet the ſon of man, that thou
of him account doſt make?
verse 4 Man in his beſt, to vanitie
is moſt like ev'ry way,
His days are like a ſhadow ſwift
that paſſeth ſoon away,
verse 5 Thy heav'ns now bow with ſpeed, O Lord
come down anone to look
On things below, the mountains touch
and they ſhall ſurely ſmoak.
verse 6 By thy great might caſt lightning forth
them ſcatter and annoy,
Thine arrowes with great force ſhoot out,
and quickly them deſtroy.
verse 7 Thy mighty hand ſend from above,
rid and deliver me
Out of great waters; from the hands
of children ſtrange that be.
verse 8 Whoſe lying mouth of vanitie,
ev'n ſpeaketh all the while,
And their right hand is a right hand
Of falſhood to beguile.
verse 9 To thee a new ſong, LORD, I'le ſin…
upon a Pſalterie,
And a ten ſtringed inſtrument
I will ſing praiſe to thee.
verse 10 It's he that unto mighty Kings
ſalvation doth afford,
Who David his ſervant doth ſave,
ev'n from the hurtfull ſword.
verse 11 Rid & ſave me from childrē ſtrange
whoſe mouth ſpeaks vanitie:
And their right hand a right hand is
of falſehood verily.
verse 12 That our dear ſons as plants grown up
ſo in their youth may be,
Our daughters as dreſt corner ſtones,
ev'n like a palace hie.
verse 13 That full our garners may affoord
all maner of ſtore for meat,
…ur ſheep may bring foorth thouſands, and
ten thouſands in our ſtreet.
Our oxen be to labour ſtrong,
that no in breaking be,

of all complaints be free
…at people happy is, that is
in ſuch a caſe reſtor'd;

whoſe great God is the Lord.
PSAL. CXLV.
O Thou who art my God & King;
I will extoll thy fame;
…r ever and for ever I
will bleſſe thy holy Name.
Ev'n ev'ry day I live on earth,
I with thy ſaints together
…ill ſtill thee bleſſe, and praiſe I will
thy Name for ever and ever.
Great is the Lord, and greatly to
be praiſd by great and ſmall,
And his excellent greatneſſe is
unſearchable to all.
verse 4 One generation ſtill ſhall praiſe
thy works unto another:
And clearly alſo ſhall declare
thy mighty acts together.
verse 5 I of the glorious honour of
thy divine Majeſtie
Will alwayes ſpeak, and of thy w…

verse 6 And of thy acts moſt terrible
men ſhall ſpeak of the might:
And I likewiſe thy greatneſſe will

The memorie; of thy righteouſne…

verse 9 The LORD his goodnes doth ex…

…is tender mercies alwayes are
his works ev'n over all.
Thy works al ſhal thee praiſe, O Lord
thy Saints ſhall bleſſe thee all:
Thy kingdoms glory tell ſhall they,
of thy might talk they ſhall.
To make known to the ſons of men
his acts that mighty be,

the glorious Majeſtie.
An everlaſting kingdome is
thy Kingdome firme and ſure,
… thy dominion always doth
through ages all endure.
By his almighty hand, the LORD,
upholdeth all that fall,
…d thoſe that low be bowed down,
up high he raiſeth all.
The eyes of all things on the earth
wait on thee, as is meet,

giv'ſt unto them their meat.
verse 16 Thy hand thou op'neſt very wide,
great bleſſings for to bring;
And the deſire doſt ſatiſfie

verse 17 The LORD is ever righteous ſtill
in all wayes that are his,

PSAL. CXLVI.
PRaiſe ye the Lord his ſervants all,
and that with one accord;
O thou my ſoul moſt chearfully
praiſe the almighty Lord.
While as I live on earth, He praiſe
the Lord that doth me ſave,
…'le to my GOD ſing praiſes while
I any being have.
Put not your truſt in any way
in Princes that ſhall fall;
Nor in the ſon of man, in whom
there is no help at all.
His breath goes foorth, & he returns
unto his earth and clay.
His fooliſh thoughts then periſh all
in that ſame very day.
verse 5 He happy is that for his help
hath Jacobs God to be,
Whoſe hope is founded ever faſt
in God his Lord moſt hie.
verse 6 Which made the heav'n and als the earth,
the ſea that is moſt deep
And all that is therein; which well
for ever truth doth keep.
verse 7 Which judgement executs for ſuch
as ſtill oppreſſed be,
