The Psalms of David in Meter with the Prose Interlined, Psalm 40 – Psalm 43
PSAL. XL.
I Waited patiently for the Lord, and he enclined unto me, and heard my cry.
FOr him that is the only Lord I waited patiently,
And unto me he did incline, and he did hear my cry.
2 He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.
2 Up from a fearfull pit and clay that's miry brought he me,
And set my feet upon a rock, my goings stablish'd he.
3 And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and trust in the Lord.
3 A new song in my mouth he put, our Gods praise to record,
It many shall see, and shall fear, and shall trust in the Lord.
4 Blessed is that man that maketh the Lord his trust: and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.
4 That man is blessed that doth make the Lord his trust alwayes,
And not respects the proud, nor such as turne aside to lyes.
5 Many, O Lord my God, are thy wonderfull works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward:
5 O Lord my God right many are the works that thou hast done
Most wonderfull, and als thy thoughts which to us-ward are gone.
They cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare, and speak of them, they are more then can be numbred.
In order none can reckon them to thee; if them declare
I would, and speak of them, they moe then can be numbered are.
6 Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire, mine ears hast thou opened: burnt-offering and sin-offering hast thou not required.
6 Thou sacrifice and offering didst not at all desire,
Mine ears thou peirc'dst, sin-offerings thou and burnt didst not require.
7 Then said I, Lo I come: in the volume of thy book it is written of me,
7 In that same very time I said, now lo I come to thee.
Ev'n in the volume of thy book it written is of me.
8 I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea thy law is within my heart.
8 I take delight to do thy will O thou my God that art,
Yea and the law that thou hast giv'n it is within my heart.
9 I have preached righteousnesse in the great congregation: lo, I have not refrained my lips, O Lord, thou knowest.
9 I righteousnesse have preached in the congregation great,
Lo, I have not refrain'd my lips: O Lord thou knowest it.
10 I have not hid thy righteousnesse within my heart, I have declared thy faithfulnesse and … salvation:
10 Within my heart I not at all have hid thy righteousnesse,
I thy salvation have declar'd and als thy faithfulnsse.
I have not concealed thy loving kindnesse, and thy truth from the great congregation.
Thy kindnesse, which most loving is, concealed not have I
Nor from the congregation great have hid thy verity.
11 Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O Lord: letthy loving kindnesse and thy truth continually preserve me.
11 Thy tender mercies from me Lord, withold not, let me have
Thy loving kindnesse, and thy truth for ever me to save.
12 For innumerable evils have compassed me about, mine iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I am not able to look up:
12 For ills innumerable have me compassed about:
My sins have taken hold on me, so can I not look out.
They are mo then the hairs of mine head▪ therefore my heart faileth me.
13 Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me: O Lord; make haste to help me.
My heart me fails, for then the hairs of mine head moe they be:
13 Be pleasd me to deliver, Lord, hast Lord for help to me.
14 Let them be ashamed and confounded together, that seek after my soul to destroy it: let them be driven backward and put to shame that wish me evill.
14 Sham'd and confounded be all they that seek my soul to kill;
Let them be backward driv'n, and put to shame that wish me ill.
15 Let them be desolate for a reward of their shame, that say unto me, Aha, aha!
15 And of their shame for a reward let them be ev'ry way
Most desolate, that un to me Aha, aha do say!
16 Let all those that seek thee, rejoice and be glade in thee: let such as love thy salvation▪ say co…inually, the Lord …e magnified.
16 Let those that do thee se…k rejoice, and be all glade in thee:
Let such as thy salvation love, say still; God magnisie.
17 But I am poor and n…edy, yet the Lord thinketh upon me: thou art my help and my de…iverer, make no tarrying, O my God.
17 But I'm poor, needy, yet the Lord of me a care doth take:
My help thou and deliv'rer art, my God no tarrying make.
PSAL. XLI.
BLessed is he that considereth the poor: the Lord will deliver him in time of trouble.
HE is a blessed man that doth him that is poor consider,
For when the time of trouble is the Lord will him deliver.
2 The Lord will preserve him, and keep him alive, and he shall be blessed upon earth; and thou will not deliver him unto the will of his enemies.
2 God will preserve and keep alive, and on earth blesse him still:
And thou wilt not deliver him unto his en'mies will.
3 The Lord will strengthen him upon the be… of languishing: thou wilt make all his bed in his sicknesse.
3 Upon the bed of languishing the Lord him strengthen shall,
Thou also wilt the bed that's his make in his sicknesse all.
4 I said, Lord, be mercifull unto me … hea… my so… for I have sinned against thee.
4 I then, O Lord, unto thee said, be mercifull to me;
And do thou heal my soul, for I have sinned against thee.
5 Mine enemies speak evill of me: when shall he die, and his name perish?
5 Those that mine enemies are, of me that speak evill are the same
When shall he die and so away quite perish shall his Name?
6 And if he come to see me, he speaketh vanity: his heart gathereth iniquity to it s…f when he go…th abroad, he tell…th it.
6 If me to see he comes, he speaks vain things; yea ev'n his heart
Sin gathereth to it self, he't tels when he abroad doth part.
7 All that hate me, whisper together against me: against me do they devise my hurt.
7 Those that me hate do whisper all together against me.
Against me also they dev…d what to my hurt can be.
8 An evill disease say they, cleaveth fast unto him: and now that he lieth, he shall rise up …o more.
8 An ill disease, say they, doth cleave unto him fast, therefore
And now that he in bed doth ly; he shall rise up no more.
9 Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lift up his heel against me.
9 Yea ev'n mine own familiar friend in whom I trusted well,
Which of my bread did eat, hath up against me lift his heel.
10 But thou, O Lord, be mercifull unto me, and raise me up, that I may require them.
10 But thou, O Lord, be mercifull unto me ev'ry way,
And do thou also raise me up that them requite I may.
11 By this I know that thou favourest me: because mine enemie doth not triumph over me.
11 By this assuredly I know I favour have of thee,
Because he that mine en'mie is doth not triumph o're me.
12 And as for me, thou upholdest me in mine integrity: and settest me before thy face for ever.
12 And as for me thou me upholdst in mine integrity
And thou before thy countenance setst me continually.
13 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, from everlasting, and everlasting, Amen, and Amen.
13 From everlasting the Lord God of Isra'l blest by men
And unto everlasting be; Amen, yea and Amen.
PSAL. XLII.
AS the hart panteth after the water brooks: so panteth my soul after thee, O God.
EVen as the thirsty hart doth pant at water brooks to be,
It is so that my soul O God still panteth after thee.
2 My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?
2 My soul doth thirst for God, for God that's living evermore:
When shall I come, that so I may appear my God before?
3 My tears have been my meat day and night: while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?
3 My tears they have been unto me my meat both night and day.
While unto me continually where is thy God? they say.
4 When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me, for I had gone▪ with the multitude,
4 My soul I do pour out in me when this I think upon,
For with those of the multitude together had I gone.
I went with them to the house of God; with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holie day.
With them unto Gods house I went, with voice of praise and joy,
Ev'n with a multitude of them that did keep holy day.
5 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God, for I shall yet praise him …or the help of his countenance.
5 O why art thou cast down my soul? what doth disquiet thee?
In God hope, for I'le yet him praise, for his face helpeth me.
6 O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee from the land of Iordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Missar.
6 My God, my soul's cast down in me, therefore thee minde I will,
From Jordans and Hermonites land, and from the Missar hill.
7 Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy water spouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.
7 At of thy water-spouts the noise deep unto deep doth call,
Thy billows and thy waves also, gone over me are all.
8 Yet the Lord will command his loving kindnesse in the day time, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life.
8 His loving kindnesse yet the Lord command will in the day:
His song all …ght shall be with me, to my lifes God I'le pray.
9 I will say unto God, My rock, why hast thou forgotten me? why go I mourning, because of the oppression of the enemy?
9 I unto God will say, My Rock, why me forgetst thou so?
For th'enemies oppression why mourning do I go?
10 As with a sword in my bones, mine enemies reproach me: while they say … unto me, Where is thy God?
10 As with a sword within my bones mine enemies me reproach,
While unto me where's now thy God this is their daily speach.
11 Why art thou cast down, O my soul … and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.
11 Why art thou, O my soul, cast down? what doth disquiet thee?
Trust God, I'le him yet praise; my GOD, and health of face is he.
PSAL. XLIII.
IUdge me, O God and plead my cause against an ungodly nation; O deliver me from the deceitfull and unjust man.
AGainst th'ungodly nation, Lord, my cause plead, judge thou me:
From th'unjust and deceitfull man let me deliv'red be.
2 For thou ar… the God of my strength, why doest thou cast me off? why go I mourning, because of the oppression of the enemy?
2 For of my strength thou art the God, why me off casts thou so?
For th'enemies oppression why mourning do I go?
3 O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me, let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles.
3 O send thy light out, and thy truth, let them so lead me still
And to thy Tabernacles bring, and to thy holy hill.
4 Then will I go unto the altar of God, unto God m… exceeding joy: yea, upon the harp will I praise thee, O God▪ my God.
4 Then will I to Gods altar go, to God my chiefest joy:
Yea, God my God, thee for to praise my harp I will imploy.
5 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope in God, for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.
5 Why art thou, O my soul, cast down? what doth disquiet thee?
Trust God, I'le him yet praise; my GOD, and health of face is he.
