The Psalms of David in Meter with the Prose Interlined, Psalm 18 – Psalm 21

PSAL. XVIII.

I Will love thee, O Lord, my strength.

2 The Lord is my rock, and my fortresse and my deliverer,

O Lord, my strength, I will thee love, 2 my fortresse is the Lord,

My rock, and he that doth to me deliverance afford.

My God, my strength in whom I will trust, my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.

My God, my strength, in whom I'le trust, a buckler unto me,

The horne of my salvation, and my high tower is he.

3 I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.

3 Upon the Lord, who to be prais'd is worthy I will call,

And so I shall then saved be from these mine enemies all.

4 The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid.

5 The sorrows of hell compassed me about: the snares of death prevented me.

4 Deaths sorrowes compast me, floods of ill men'fraid made me be,

5 Hels sorrows compast me about, deaths snares prevented me.

6 In my distresse I called upon the Lord, and cryed unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even unto his ears.

6 I cal'd on God in my distresse, to my God cryed I,

He from his Temple heard my voice, to his ears came my cry.

7 Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundation also of the hils moved, and were shaken, because he was wroth.

7 Then shook the earth, and trembled all the hils foundation both

Were mov'd, and als they shaken were, because that he was wroth,

8 There went up a smoake out of his nostrils, and fire out of his mouth devoured, coals were kindled by it.

8 Out of his nostrils in that place, a smoak went up on hye

And from his mouth a fire devour'd, coals kindled were thereby.

9 He bowed the heavens also and came down: and darkenesse was under his feet.

9 The Heavens also did he bow, and came down as was meet,

And in that place a darknesse thick was underneath his feet.

10 And he rode upon a cherub, and did flie: yea, he did flie upon the wings of the winde.

10 And he upon a cherub rode, and also flie did he

Yea of the winde upon the wings he did then swiftly flee.

11 He made darkenesse his secret place: his pavilion round about him, were dark waters, and thick clouds of the skies.

11 He darknesse made his secret place and his pavilion hye,

About him round, were waters dark, and thick clouds of the sky.

12 At the brightnesse that was before him, his thick clouds passed, hait- stones and coals of fire.

12 By reason of the brightnesse which before him did appear,

His clouds that were so thick did passe, hailstones and coals of fire,

13 The Lord also thundred in the heavens, and the Highest gave his voice; hail stones and coals of fire.

13 The Lord He in the heav'ns also did thunder in his ire;

And then the Highest gave his voice: hailstones and coales of fire.

14 Yea, he sent out his arrows and scattered them, and he shot out lightnings, and discomsited them.

14 Yea, he his arrows out did send, and he them scattered;

And he his lightnings did shoot out and them discomfited.

15 Then the channels of waters were seen, and the foundations of the world were discovered: at thy rebuke, O▪ Lord, at the blast of the breath of thy nostrils.

15 The waters channels then were seen, the worlds foundations fast

Discovered were at thy rebuke Lord, at thy nostrils blast.

16 He sent from above, he took me, he drew me out of many waters.

16 He from above then down did send, and also took he me

And he me out of waters drew that very many be.

17 He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them which hated me: for they were too strong for me.

17 From him that was mine enemy strong me then delivered he,

And from them als which did me hate that were too strong for me.

18 They prevented me in the day of my calamity: but the Lord was my stay.

18 Of my calamity they did prevent me in the day

But he that is the Lord himself unto me was a stay.

19 He brought me forth also into a large place: he delivered me, because he delighted in me.

19 He also a large place into me brought forth by his might,

He did deliver me, because he did in me delight.

20 The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousnesse, according to the cleannesse of my hands hath he recompensed me.

20 According to my righteousnesse The Lord rewarded me:

After the cleannesse of my hands me recompensd hath he.

21 For I have kept the wayes of the Lord and have not wickedly departed from my God.

21 For of the Lord I have the wayes well kept with all my heart,

And from my God I wickedly did not at all depart.

22 For all his judgements were before me: and I did not put away his statutes from me.

22 For all the judgements that are his before my face were they,

And I the statutes that his are put not from me away.

23 I was also upright before him: and I kept my self from mine iniquity.

23 I also ever was upright and that ev'n him before,

And I from mine iniquity did keep my self therefore.

24 Therefore hath the Lord recompensed me according to my righteousnesse, according to the cleannesse of my hands in his eye-sight.

24 Therefore God hath me recompensd according to my right:

According to the cleannesse of my hands in his eye-sight▪

25 With the mercifull thou wilt shew thy self mercifull: with an upright man thou wilt shew thy self upright.

With mercifull thou wilt thy self shew mercifull to be,

Thou wilt thee shew upright with him that is upright with thee.

26 With the pure thou wilt shew thy self pure, and with the froward thou wilt shew thy self froward.

26 Thou with the pure thy self wilt shew most pure in all thy wayes,

And with the froward thou thy self, wilt froward shew likewise.

27 For thou wilt save the afflicted people: but wilt bring down high looks.

28 For thou wilt light my candle: the Lord my God will enlighten my darknesse.

27 For thou afflicted folk wilt save, but bring down looks of hight:

28 My lamp thou'lt light; the Lord my God will make my darknesse light.

29 For by thee I have run thorow a troup▪ and by my God have I leaped over a wall.

29 For it is by thee that I have run through a troup not small,

And by my God also have I high leaped ov'r a wall.

30 As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the Lord is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him.

30 As for God, perfect is his way, the Lords word it is tri'd;

He to all those that trust in him a buckler doth abide.

31 For who is God, save the Lord? or wh… is a rock save our God?

32 It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect

31 For who's God save the Lord? or who saye our God rock can be?

32 It's God that makes my way perfect; and with strength girdeth me.

33 He maketh my feet like hinds feet, and setteth me upon my high places.

34 He teacheth my hands to war, so that a …owe of steel is broken by mine arms.

33 Like Hindes he makes my feet, me sets on my high places well:

34 To war he taught my hands, mine arms do break a bow of steel.

35 Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation, and thy right hand hath holden me up, and thy gentlenes hath made me great.

35 The shield of thy salvation als to me is given from thee:

Thy right hand up me held, and great thy gentlenesse made me.

36 Thou hast enlarged my steps under me; that my feet did not slip.

37 I have pursued mine enemies, and overtaken them:

36 Thou under me my steps inlargdst that my feet slipt not then;

37 I have pursu'd mine enemies, and them have overta…en.

Neither did I turn again till they w… consumed.

38 I have wounded them that they were not able to rise, they are faln under my feet.

I turn'd not till they were consum'd, 38 I wounded have them all,

That they could not arise, they get under my feet a fall.

39 For thou hast girded me with strength unto the battell: thou hast subdued under m… those that rose up against me.

39 For thou hast girded me with strength to battel'gainst my foes:

Thou hast subdued under me. those that up'gainst me rose.

40 Thou hast also given me the necks of mine enemies: that I might destroy them that hate me.

40 Thou hast also the necks to me giv'n of mine enemies great,

That by this meanes I might destroy all them that do me hate-

41 They cryed, but there was none to save them: even unto the Lord, but he answered them not.

41 They crl'd aloud; but there was none at all them for to save,

Ev'n to the Lord, but unto them he then no answer gave.

42 Then did I beat them small as the dust before the winde: I did cast them out as the dirt in the streets.

42 Then as the dust before the wind I thus did beat them small,

And as the dirt upon the streets I did cast out them all.

43 Thou hast delivered me from the strivings of the people, and thou hast made me the head of the heathen: a people whom I have not known, shall serve me.

43 From peoples strivings thou me fredst, the heathens head thou me

Hast made; a people shall me serve that not known to me be.

44 Assoon as they hear of me, they shall obey me: the stangers shall submit themselves unto me.

44 Assoon as they shall hear of me, they shall obey me all,

The strangers unto me submit themselves most humbly shall.

45 The strangers shall fade away, and be afraid out of their close places.

45 Those that be strangers from the Lord, right soon shall fade away,

And out of their close places all afraid then be shall they.

46 The Lord liveth, and blessed be my rock▪ and let the God of my salvation be exalted.

46 The Lord doth live, blest be the rock that doth belong to me,

And let of my salvation the God exalted be.

47 It is God that avengeth me, and subdueth the people under me.

48 He delivereth me from mine enemies:

47 God me avengeth, and subdues the people under me:

48 He doth deliver me from those that to me en'mies be:

Yea, thou liftest me up above those that rise up against me: thou hast delivered me from the violent man.

Above those that 'gainst me rise up yea, thou upliftest me,

Thou also hast me from the man that violent is set free.

49 Therefore will I give thanks unto thee (O Lord) among the heathen, and fing praises vntounto thy Name.

49 Therefore among the heathen I will thanks unto thee bring,

And I unto thy Name, O Lord, will also praises sing.

50 Great deliverance giveth he to his king, and sheweth mercy to his anointed, to David and his seed for evermore.
