By JOHN TOMBES. B. D.
Prov. 23. 23. Buy the truth, and ſell it not.
Acts 8. 36, 37, 38. And the Eunuch ſaid, See here is water, what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip ſaid, If thou believeſt with all thine heart, foreign, thou maiſt, or it is lawfull. And he anſwered, and ſaid, I believe that Jeſus Chriſt is the Son of God. And he commanded the Charet to ſtand ſtill, and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the Eunuch, and he baptized him.
Bernard. Serm. 66. in Cantica. Irrident nos quia baptizamus infantes, quòd oramus pro mortuis, quòd ſanctorum ſuffragia poſtulamus.
Joan. Lodovic. Vives Comment in Auguſtin. tom. 5. de civit. Dei. lib. 1. cap. 27. Nemo olim ſacro admovebatur baptiſterio, niſi adulta jam aetate, & cum idem ipſe & ſciret quid ſibi myſtica illa vellet aqua, & ſe ablui illa peteret, nec ſemel peteret. Cujus rei imaginem adhuc in noſtris infantium baptiſmis videmus. Nam rogatur etiam, num infans eo die natus, vel pridie, velitne baptizari, id que ter: pro quo ſuſceptores reſpondent, velle. Audio in quibuſdā Italiae urbibus morē veterē magna ex parte adhuc conſervari.
LONDON, Printed for George Whittington, and are to be ſold at the ſigne of the Blackmore in Biſhopſgate-ſtreete. December 15. 1645.
THe Author of this Examen being (as I heare) a godly man, and of the Presbyterian judgement, though I am not of opinion with him (notwithſtanding any thing I have here read) viz. That Infants are not the ſubject of Baptiſme; yet the end of his writing, as I conceive, being the provoking of others to write, that ſo his arguments being anſwered, himſelfe and thoſe that are of his minde may receive ſatisfaction, I permit it to paſſe the Preſſe: Not doubting but ſince now (according to the deſire of many) it is knowne where the chiefe ſtrength of the Catapaedobaptiſts lies, ſome will be found out in due time to encounter with it.
John Bachiler.
