FInding my labors have found ſuch kind acceptance, & ſuch good entertainment amongſt my honeſt Countrey men, it hath incouraged me this ſeventh time to write for their benefit, & although this book may prove fruitleſs to many becauſe not underſtood, nor regarded; yet ſome few may be of that ſpirit, as to comprehend it & imbrace it, if not openly profeſs it, yet ſecretly believe it, for upon my ſoul it is truth, written in love to thoſe that are afflicted with theſe diſtempers, commonly called New Diſeaſes: And I have taken up the Cudgils in defence of my Predeceſſor Dr. Culpepper, intending to amend his deficiency in point of Art, or better to finiſh where he left off: He beſieged the Diſeaſes, & I hope I ſhal ſtorm them, & cauſe the Enemy to fly or yeeld to my medicines; which medicines the Colledge if they pleaſe may uſe for the good health of poore Chriſtians.
Next I am to advertiſe you, that no books are printed without ſome faults: There is not a writer in the world, but if Critical fools will, he may find ſome fault or other with his writings to carp at. Every man may look into himſelf before he deſpiſes another; and whoſoever he be, let him either allow or amend anothers writing: I fear no mans raſh cenſure, nor will I plead for the Corrector and Compoſitor, the ingenuous have not onelyonly judgment to diſcern, but courteſie to paſs by ſmal… faults. The moſt remarkable are theſe following.
