To the Reader.
THou art here preſented with the living Sermons of one who is faln aſleep in Jeſus, whoſe memory is ſweet and fragrant unto the Saints; Hee was famous for the Work of God and Chriſt in his Generation, and Inſtrumental for the begetting of many ſpiritual Children unto the Lord Jeſus.
The Author of theſe Sermons (Mr. Jeremiah Burroughs) like Abel, being dead, yet ſpeaketh: And of that, which is not only our Duty to hear, but our Priviledge to be made acquainted with: for he Treats of God, of Chriſt, and Mans Soul: three choice ſubjects. Knowledge is Pleaſant, Prov. 2.20. but none more pleaſant than that is Divine. The knowledge of the holy God is Ʋnderſtanding, Pro. 9.10. the knowledge of Chriſt is Excellent, Phil. 3.8. the knowledge of both is Life eternal, John 17.3. And for the Soul, it is that piece of Immortality which is of greater value than the whole world, Mat. 16.26. It is that which God challengeth to be his, Ezek 18.4. and that which the Lord Chriſt accounted not his precious blood too much to give for, 1 Pet. 1.18, 19. I ſhall not hold thee longer from the Work it ſelf: But deſire the bleſſing of God to go along with it, and thoſe that are exerciſed in it.
