Three Kingdoms Made One by Covenant, Postscript
Poſtſcript.
THat theſe things, I have ſaid, may not ſeeme Parables, I have ſingled out a ſingle man, a good Souldier of Jeſus Chriſt, by him to exemplifie all this. As the Nobles have done before him in ancient dayes touching the well poſturing Kingdomes: ſo he has done in the maintaining his own Militia and poſturing himſelfe; for he has done as aforeſaid, and at laſt entred into Covenant with his God; and, by help of God, ſtands to it, and ſo made himſelfe as a Wall or Mountain of Braſſe, able to ſtand it out againſt all Storms and Batteries: he mocketh at Famine now, and laugheth at the Sword; If his Adverſaries threaten to Storm him, he will laugh at them; And if it be told him, that the Rebels in Ireland will joyn with them in England for that purpoſe; He will reply, That he fears God, and is not afraid of the beaſts of the earth. He now that will take a full ſight and view of this Souldier Job 5. 22.throughout all his Ranks and Poſtures, muſt haply be at three pence coſt, which thinking he may ſtick at, I will onelyonly make honourable mention of this Souldier here, and of one of his exploits, which makes him more renowned than were they, whoſe conqueſt made them famous all over the world. He has overcome himſelf. That is a conqueſt indeed; he has ever-powred Self-will, neereſt of Kin to the great troubler of the world, Maſter of Miſ-rule, and Prince of Rebels, which, next to the Devill, has and do's cauſe all the ſtirres, tumults, and miſchief there; He has overcome this Adverſary, and thrown-out other accurſed things, I know not how many. Some foyls he received, and ſomtimes fals, but he roſe again and ſtood up the more ſtoutly. It was ſomtimes dark, and night in his ſpirit, but it was alwayes day with him, and light in the Lord: and his fals made him riſe the higher in faith, humility, patience.
Indeed this is the man, who is a great part of the Kingdoms Militia, the Chariots of Iſrael and the horſemen thereof: he has chaſed a thouſand, and put a legion to flight. This he did, you will ſay, when he was lively and ſtrong. That is true, but this man did the greateſt exploit then, when his enemy thought him under the Power of his hand; Then was this Souldier ſtrongeſt, when that Adverſary, the King of terrours, thought him to be weakeſt, Sick, and ſick unto death; Then he did not ſay, I am ſick, but ſtrong in the Lord, and ſo his Militia is compleated now; his warfare accompliſhed now; he has marched valiantly, triumphed Eſay 32. 24. Iudges 5. Revel. 4. 10. 11.gloriouſly, trod down ſtrength, in His ſtrength, Who made him have dominion over the Mighty. And now He is taking the Palm into his hand, but his Crown he has, with the Elders, eaſt down before Him, That ſitteth on the Throne, ſaying, Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory, and honour, and power, for thou haſt created all things, and for Thy pleaſure they are, and were created.
An end.
