The Types Unveiled, Type 1 – Type 4
TYPE I.
I Shall begin with the Paſchal Lamb, which is ſpoken of in Exod. 12. 2. which was a great Type both to them and all generations ſince, down all along to the coming of Chriſt, which was called a Paſſover, becauſe it did preſerve the Iſraelites from thoſe ſeveral Plagues which paſſed through the land of Egypt; the manner of it was thus, That becauſe Pharaoh would not let the Iſraelites go to ſerve the Lord, after he had nine Plagues poured out upon him and his people, the Lord ſent him the Tenth Plague, which was, That a deſtroying Angel ſhould paſs through the land of Egypt in one night, and ſhould kill all the firſt born, or eldeſt, both of their children, and cattel, which were in every houſe in Egypt: Now that the Iſraelites which were amongſt them might not be touched with this Judgment, the Lord ordered them that every Family ſhould kill a Lamb the night before, and ſtrike the Door-poſts of their houſes with the blood of the Lamb, which was to be a ſigne to the Angel, that he was not to k…ll any one in that houſe; but that he muſt paſs over that houſe to the next, where the blood of the Lamb was not ſprinkled on the doors; This you may read in Exod. 12. 2. and in verſe 22, 23. Beſides, there was another Type in the Paſſover of the Lamb; for they were to Eat it; and the manner of it was thus: Firſt, The Lamb was to be without blemiſh; and as to the manner of eating it, they were to Roſt it with fire. 2. They were to eat all the Lamb at once, they were not to leave any of it remaining until the morrow, Head and Leggs, with all the Appurtenances, were to be eaten, Exod. 12. 8, 9, 10. 3. The Sauce with which they were to eat the Lamb with, was Bitter Herbs: And the Bread with which they were to eat it, was to be unlevened Bread, Verſ. 8. with Numb. 9 11. 4. They were to eat it with their Loins girded. 5. With their Shoos on their feet. 6. With their Staff in their hands. 7. In haſt, for it was the Lords Paſſover, Exod. 12. 11. And laſtly, This was to be done by every particular Family; every family was to chuſe a Lamb for its ſelf, unleſs the family were too few in number, if it were, then the next family were to join wi…h them, and ſo they were to eat it together, Exod. 12. 4.
TYPE II.
The ſecond Type was The children of Iſrael their paſsing thorow the Red Sea, juſt at their coming out of Egypt, Exod. 1. 4.
IN which are theſe things to be conſidered:
Firſt, The peoples great Diſtreſs, verſ. 10 31.
Secondly, The cauſe of their Diſtreſs, which was Pharaoh's great Army Marching behind them very dreadfully, with full purpoſe to deſtroy them, verſ. 10.
Thirdly, We may take notice of their Leaders, and thoſe were Moſes and the Angel; which Angel without doubt, was Chriſt, Exod. 14. 19. 21. For as Moſes conducted the people, ſo the Angel did conduct Moſes.
Fourthly, Moſes ſtretched out his hand and the Waters were divided, Exod. 14. 21.
Fifthly, The People go thorow the Waters, and by going through are delivered, Verſe 22.
Sixthly, The ſame Waters, which were Waters of Salvation to the Iſraelites, were Waters of Deſtruction to the Egyptians, Verſe 27. 28. of the ſame Chapter.
TYPE III.
Another Typical State was their being led into the Wilde…neſs.
IN which are theſe things to be conſidered.
Firſt, Their croſs motion up and down in the Wilderneſs; ſometimes this way, ſometimes that way; ſometimes towards the good Land, ſometimes quite contrary, and back again, as you may Read at large in Numb. 33.
Secondly, The Food they lived upon, while in that condition, was Manna from Heaven, Exod. 16. 4. with verſ. 14. 15.
Thirdly, The Water they lived by, and drank of, was Water out of the Rock, which came out by Moſes his ſtriking of it, Exod. 17. 5, 6, 7.
Fourthly, We may not omit this paſſage; As ſoon as the Iſraelites were delivered from the Egyptians by the Red Sea, and brought into the Wilderneſs, the firſt Waters they drank of, were Waters of Bitterneſs, or Bitter Waters, which ſuch called Marah, Exod. 16. 22, 23 But this was done by the appointment of God; For the ſweetning of thoſe Waters again to the people, Moſes was to take a Tree which God ſhewed him; Mark, that not every Tree would do it, but that only which was of Gods directing or chuſing; and Moſes was to caſt the Tree into the Waters, which done, the Waters that were bitter before, became ſweet, and the people could drink of them, Exod. 16. 25.
Next we are to conſider the Nature of the Wilderneſs; It was a place of Rocks and Mountains, Hills and Vallies, Deut. 8. 5. A place that afforded few Springs, or Pools of Water; a place that no Corn grew in; a place of Doubts and Fears; Sometimes aſſaulted with Enemies, as Og K…ng of Baſhan, the Moabites and Midianites; then Balaam comes up with his bitter Curſes againſt them, Numb. 22. 5, 6.
This place might likewiſe be called a place of Wonders, becauſe of the great Miracles which God did for them, in delivering them out of all their Temptations; and in preſerving them all along to their Canaan, Pſal. 88. Likewiſe you may ſee the Diſcouragements that they met with in their way to Canaan, by the falſe Spies, Numb. 13. 28, 29, 30, 31. Likewiſe you may ſee the Bunch of Grapes brought from the good Land, Numb. 13. 23. and yet notwithſtanding they could not believe for their comfort.
There was likewiſe in the Wilderneſs-condition, other Types held out to them, both for their and our Inſtruction; As the Cloud, which always led them up and down, See Exod. 40. 34, 36, 37, 38. compared with Numb. 9. 16, 17.
TYPE IV.
The Brazen Serpent which was ſet up upon a Pole in the Wilderneſs, Numb. 21. 6, 7, 8, 9.
THe occaſion of that Type was this, Becauſe of thoſe hot, ſtinging, fiery Serpents which the Wilderneſs did produce, which had deſtroyed many of the People; God in mercy to the Jews cauſed this thing to be made, called a Brazen Serpent; and it was to be ſet upon a Pole, for this purpoſe, viz. That at what time any of the People ſhould be ſtung by theſe ſtinging, venemous Beaſts, that if they ſhould but look up to the Brazen Serpent ſet upon the Pole for that purpoſe, they ſhould be preſently Cured, although it might be that the wounded party might be at ſuch a diſtance from the Pole, as that they might not be able to reach it with a bodily eye, yet if in obedience to the Ordinance they did look unto that Point, where they conceived the Brazen Serpent ſtood upon the top of the Pole, ſo doing would procure them immediate health, Numb. 21. 6, 7, 8, 9.
