The Truly Blessed Man, Part 4

VERSE VI.

6. For this ſhall every one that is Godly, pray unto thee, in a time when thou mayſt be found: Surely in the floods of great waters, they ſhall not come nigh unto him.

WE now proceed to the third part of the Pſalm; in which David directs us how to improve the faith of the Doctrine of this Bleſſedneſs, ariſing from a ſtate of pardon, …emplified in himſelf. He directeth himſelf to God in the words, but the Doctrine in them is accommodated for the encouragement of all that fear God. And here he tell us.

1. What is the duty of the People of God on his account, For this, &c.

2. What is the priviledge of ſuch, ſurely, &c.

3. Profeſſeth his faith in God on this account, for encouragement. Verſe 7.

We may take theſe things up in their order.

1. He declares what is the duty of the People of God on this account, for this ſhall, &c.

In the words obſerve,

1. The Subject of this Duty, the Godly: the …ord ſignifieth one that is Benevolent, Beneficent, Pious or Good. A Godly man is called by this …ord, either to ſignifie that he is merciful and beneficent, or that he hath obtained mercy and goodneſs from God: We are here to underſtand … for one that hath the ſaving Grace of God put into him: for till this no man can truly ſeek God.

2. The extent of the Subject; every one that is Godly: It is a diſpoſition that God puts into all that are truly Converted, and they ſhall exert it on the occaſions of it.

3. The duty it ſelf; he ſhall pray: this word when applied to praying, implies the bringing our cauſe to God, laying it before him, and leaving it with him; all of which is proper to a petitionary prayer.

4. The Object of this prayer; God, he ſhall pray unto thee; to pray to any other is Idolatry, and to ask help of that which cannot ſuccour us.

5. The thing it ſelf prayed for, for this, i. e. for this forgiveneſs. When they find themſelves oppreſſed with the Guilt of ſin; or it may point us to the encouragement of ſo praying; for this, may be read, upon this, i. e. upon the reading and being acquainted with my experience, and good ſucceſs in ſo coming to God.

6. The ſeaſon of this prayer, in a time when thou mayſt be found; Heb in a time of finding. Some interpret it of a time of affliction, when their ſin have found them out: but others, and ſo on. Tranſlation underſtand it of an opportune time wherein God is ready to be found of ſuch as indeed ſeek him.

Three Doctrines may here be obſerved.
