A Comment Upon Christs Last Prayer, Verse 26
Verſe 26. I have made known thy Name to them, and will make it known.
IN the words, there ſeems to be the Conſideration of a double end: One is by way of Prevention, to anſwer a ſecret Demand, How the Faithful, and Followers of Chriſt, come to attain that Knowledg, which is hid from the World, and whether it were Knowledg of the right make, or no? Both which, he reſolves from hence; That he, who only doth know aright, he doth make known the Name of the Father to them; whence it comes that they both muſt know, and alſo know in a right and ſaving manner: For ſo good a Teacher, having power, and ſufficiency to make wiſe unto Salvation, cannot but make them good Schollers. Another End is, To ſet home with further Evidence, the main Concluſion in the foregoing Verſe, That the Faithful may be with him, where he is, and ſo may ſee the Glory given him by God the Father: For if he hath for the preſent, made them know the Name of the Father, and is reſolved, and doth engage himſelf, that he wil not ceaſe further dayly to inform them, until he hath made them perfect in this Knowledg: then are they fitteſt to be partakers of that happineſs to be with him, and to behold his Glory. But t his he hath done, and reſolves ſtil further to do: Therefore, &c.
We have then, theſe two Things here to be attended:
1. The Work of our Savior, what he hath done: He hath made known this Name: that is, for time paſt.
2. The Profeſſion, and Engagement of Chriſt, what he wil do for time to come: He will make it known.
To the Firſt: I have made known thy Name to them.
The Doctrine we ſhal obſerve from hence, it this: Viz.
