The Psalms of David in Meter with the Prose Interlined, Psalm 139 – Psalm 144

PSAL. CXXXIX.

O Lord, thou hast searched me, and known me.

2 Thou knowest my down sitting, and mine up-rising: thou understandest my thought afar off.

O Lord, thou hast me search'd & known: 2 Thou understandst what are

My sitting down, and rising up: thou know'st my thought afarre.

3 Thou compassest my path, and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my wayes.

3 My path thou and my lying down compassest in each part;

And likewise thou with all my wayes right well acquainted art.

4 For there is not a word in my tongue: but lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether.

4 For in my tongue while I do speak there is not any word

But lo it altogether is unto thee known, O Lord.

5 Thou hast beset me behinde and before: and laid thine hand upon me.

6 Such knowledge is too wonderfull for me: it is high, I cannot attain unto it.

5 Thou me besetst behind, before, and laidst thine hand on me,

6 Such knowledge is for me too strange, it to attain's too hie.

7 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?

7 O whether from thy sprit shall I go there hid for to be?

Or from thy presence me to save, O whether shall I flee?

8 If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if▪ I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.

8 If I ascend up into heav'n, thou there art as else where;

If I do make my bed in hell, behold thou als art there.

9 If I take the wings of the morning: and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea:

10 Even there shall thy hand lead me: and thy right hand shall hold me.

9 If mornings wings I take and dwell in utmost parts of sea:

10 There even shall thy hand me lead, thy right hand shall hold me.

11 If I say, Surely the darknesse shall cover me: even the night shall be light about mee.

11 If I should say the darknesse shall then surely cover me,

Ev'n then the very night it self shall light about me be.

12 Yea the darknesse hideth not from thee, but the night shineth as the day: the darknesse and the light are both alike to thee.

12 Yea darknesse hideth not from thee, as day so shines the night;

Unto thee also are alike both darknesse and the light.

13 For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mothers womb.

13 For those my reins that in me are possessed were by thee,

And thou within my mothers womb hast also cov'red me.

14 I will praise thee, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made, marvellous are thy works▪ and that my soul knoweth right well.

14 I will thee praise, for fearfully, and strangely made I am,

Thy works are marv'lous, and my soul right well doth know the same.

15 My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret: and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.

15 My substance was not hid from thee, when as in secret I

Was made, and in earths lowest parts was wrought then curiously.

16 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfite, and in thy book all my members were written,

16 Thine eyes did all my substance see, yet being unperfite,

And als within thy book thou didst these all my members write:

Which in continuance were fashioned: when as yet there was none of them.

Which after in continuance were fashion'd ev'ry one,

When as that any being had yet of them there was none.

17 How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God: how great is the sum of them?

17 O God, how also precious are ever unto me

The thoughts thou hast; how great likewise the summe of them now be?

18 If I should count them, they are moo in number then the sand: when I awake I am still with thee.

18 If I should count them, then the sand they mo… in number be▪

And whensoever I awake then I am still with thee.

19 Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God: depart from me therefore, ye bloudy men.

19 O God, thou wilt them surely slay that wicked be in heart,

Therefore ye that are bloody men, do ye from me depart.

20 For they speak against thee wickedly, and thine enemies take thy Name in vain.

20 For they against thee wickedly do speak with great disdain,

And they that are thine enemies do take thy Name in vain.

21 Do not I hate them, O Lord: that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee?

21 O Lord all them that do thee hate do I not hate likewise?

And am I not als griev'd with those that up against thee rise?

22 I hate them with perfect hatred; I count them mine enemies.

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:

22 With perfect hatred I them hate, my foes I count them so:

23 Lord search me, know my heart, me try, my thoughts all do thou know.

24 And see if there be any wicked way in me: and lead me in the way everlasting.

24 And see if any wicked way at all there in me be,

And in the everlasting way a leader be to me.

PSAL. CXL.

DEliver me, O Lord, from the evill man: preserve me from the violent man.

DEliver me, Lord, from the man that unto ill is bent,

And me preserve thou from the man that is so violent.

2 Which imagine mischiefs in their heart: continually are they gathered together for war.

2 Which thus within their heart mischiefes imagining still are:

Together are they gathered coutinually for war.

3 They have sharpned their tongues like a serpent: adders poison is under their lips. Selah.

3 And thus they sharpned have their tongues as doth a serpent his,

Under their lips of Adders als the deadly poison is. Selah.

4 Keep me, O Lord, from the hands of the wicked, preserve me from the violent man: who have purposed to overthrow my goings.

4 Lord keep me from the wickeds hands, from violent men me save,

Who wholly for to overthrow my goings purpos'd have.

5 The proud have hid a snare for me, and cords, they have spread a net by the way side: they have set grins for me. Selah.

5 The proud for me a snare and cords have hid, and they a net

Have by the way side spread also, they grins have for me set. Selah.

6 I said unto the Lord, Thou art my God: hear the voice of my supplications, O Lord.

6 Then I did say unto the Lord, thou art a God to me;

Let thou my supplications voice be heard, O Lord, by thee.

7 O God the Lord, the strength of my salvation: thou hast covered my head in the day of battell.

7 O God the Lord, who art the strength of my salvation,

A covering in the battell day my head thou hast put on.

8 Grant not, O Lord, the desires of the wicked: further not his wicked device, lest they exalt themselves. Selah.

8 Of him that's wicked the desires, O Lord, not grant thou shalt,

Not further thou his ill device, left they themselves exalt. Selah.

9 As for the head of those that compasse me about: let the mischief of their own lips cover them.

9 As for the head of all those men about that compasse me,

Let with mischief of their own lips themselves all covred be.

10 Let burning coals fall upon them, let them be cast into the fire: into deep pits, that they rise not up again.

10 Let burning coals upon them fall, let them be cast likewise.

Into the fire, into deep pits, that they again not rise.

11 Let not an evill speaker be established in the earth, evil shall hunt the violent man to overthrow him.

11 Let not an evill speaker be on earth establish'd now,

Evill shall hunt the violent man, him for to overthrow.

12 I know that the Lord will maintain the cause of the afflicted: and the right of the poor.

12 I know that he that is the Lord maintain will by his might

The cause of the afflicted man and of the poore the …ight.

13 Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy Name: the upright shall dwell in thy presence.

13 The righteous men unto thy Name give thanks shall surely all,

And they also that are upright dwell in thy presence shall.

PSAL. CXLI.

LOrd I cry unto thee, make haste unto me: give ear unto my voice when I cry unto thee.

UNto thee do I cry, O Lord, do thou make hast to me,

Give thou an ear unto my voice when I cry unto thee.

2 Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

2 Let thou my prayer be set foorth as incense before thee,

As evening sacrifice so let my hands uplifting be.

3 Set a watch (O Lord) before my mouth: keep the door of my lips.

3 O thou the Lord now do thou set a watch my mouth before,

And of my lips I thee beseech that thou wouldst keep the door.

4 Incline not my heart to any evill thing, to practise wicked works, with men that work iniquity: and let me not eat of their dainties.

4 My heart incline not unto ill, ill works let me not treat

With men that work iniquity, nor of their dainties eat.

5 Let the righteous smite me, it shall be a kindnesse: and let him reprove me, it shall be an excellent oil,

5 But let the righteous man me smite it shall a kindnesse be:

Let him reprove, it shall be as excellent oil to me,

Which shall not break my head: for yet my prayer also shall be in their calamities.

Which shall not break my head at all, for yet also by me

For them in their calamities my prayer it shall be.

6 When their judges are overthrown in sto…y places, they shall hear my words, for they are sweet.

6 When as their Judges overthrown in stony places meet,

They surely then shall hear my words, for they are very sweet.

7 Our bones are scattered at the graves mouth▪ as when one cutteth and cleaveth wood upon the earth.

7 Ev'n at graves mouth our very bones they scattred are each one,

As when one cutteth, and doth cleave the wood the earth upon.

8 But mine eyes are unto thee, O God the Lord: in thee is my trust, leave not my soul destitute.

8 But, O thou, who art God the Lord▪ mine eyes unto thee be▪

My soul leave thou not destitute, my trust it is in thee.

9 Keep me from the snare which they have laid for me, and the grins of the workers of iniquity.

10 Let the wicked fall into their own nets: whilest that I withall escape.

9 Keep me from snares they laid for me and from ill workers trap,

10 In their own nets let wicked fall whilst I withall escape.

PSAL. CXLII.

I Cried unto the Lord with my voice: with my voice unto the Lord did I make my supplication.

I Unto him that is the Lord, thus with my voice did cry,

My supplication with my voice unto the Lord made I.

2 I poured out my complaint before him: I shewed before him my trouble.

2 Before him then I my complaints did poure out in great store,

And what to me a trouble was I shewed him before.

3 When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then thou knewest my path: in the way wherein I walked have they privily laid a snare for me.

3 When in me was ov'rwhelm'd my sprit, my path was known to thee:

They snares in wayes wherein I walk'd laid privily for me.

4 I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me, refuge failed me: no man cared for my soul.

4 On my right hand I look'd, and saw, but none at all was there

That would me know, refuge me fail'd: none for my soul did care.

5 I cried unto thee, O Lord, I said, Thou art my refuge, and my portion in the land of the living.

5 I unto thee, O Lord, did cry, I said unto thee then

My portion and refuge thou art in land of living men.

6 Attend unto my cry, for I am brought very low, deliver me from my persecutors for they are stronger then I.

6 Sith that I am brought very low, attend unto my cry:

Me from my persecutors save, who stronger are then I.

7 Bring my soul out of prison, that I may praise thy Name: the righteous shall compasse me about: for thou shalt deal bountifullie with me.

7 That I thy Name may praise, bring thou my soul from prison free,

The just me'l compasse, for thou shalt deal bounteously with me.

PSAL. CXLIII.

HEar my prayer, O Lord, give ear to my supplications: in thy faithfulnesse answer me, and in thy righteousnesse.

LOrd hear my prayer, my sutes hear thou and in thy faithfullnesse

An answer give thou unto me, and in thy righteousnesse.

2 And enter not into judgement with thy servant: for in thy sight shall no man living be justified.

2 In judgement enter not with him that servant is to thee,

For justified in thy sight no living man shall be.

3 For the enemy hath persecuted my soul, he hath smitten my life down to the ground: he hath made me to dwell in darknesse, as those that have been long dead.

3 For th… en'mie hath my soul pursu'd, my life to ground hath tread,

He hath me made in darknesse dwell, as those that long were dead.

4 Therefore is my spirit overwhelmed within me: my heart within me is desolate.

4 My spirit therefore me within is overwhelm'd by this,

This heart of mine within me als all desolate it is.

5 I remember the dayes of old, I meditate on all thy works: I muse on the work of thy hands.

5 The dayes of old remember I, to meditate I use,

On all thy workes; yea on the work done by thy hands I muse.

6 I stretch forth my hands unto thee: my soul thirsteth after thee, as a thirsty land. Selah.

6 I unto thee stretch forth my hands, my soul that is in me,

Most like unto a thirsty land, still thirsteth after thee. Selah.

7 Hear me speedily, O Lord, my spirit faileth, hide not thy face from me: lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit.

7 Lord, hear with speed, my spirit doth fail, hide not thy face from me,

Lest like to them that do go down into the pit I be.

8 Cause me to hear thy loving kindnesse in the morning, for in thee do I trust, cause me to know the way wherein I should walk:

8 Cause me at morn thy kindnesse hear for in thee trust I doe,

Cause thou me for to know the way wherein that I should go.

For I lift up my soul unto thee.

9 Deliver me, O Lord, from mine enemies: I flee unto thee to hide me.

For I to thee lift up my soul, 9 O Lord deliver me

From those mine enemies; me to hide I doe flee unto thee.

10 Teach me to do thy will, for thou art my God, thy spirit is good: lead me into the land of uprightnesse.

10 Teach me to do thy will, for that thou art my God indeed:

Thy sprit is good; into the land of uprightnesse me lead.

11 Quicken me, O Lord, for thy Names sake: for thy righteousnesse sake bring my soul out of trouble.

11 O for the sake of thine own Name, Lord, do thou quicken me,

And do thou for thy righteousnes my soul from trouble free.

12 And of thy mercy cut off mine enemies, and destroy all them that afflict my soul: for I am thy servant.

14 And of thy mercy cut thou off mine enemies, and the same

Destroy all that afflict my soul, for I thy servant am.

PSAL. CXLIV.

BLessed be the Lord my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight.

O Blessed ever be the Lord who is my strength alight,

Which unto warre doth teach my hands, and fingers for to fight.

2 My goodnesse, and my fortresse, my high tower, and my deliverer, my shield, and he in whom I trust: who subdueth my people under mee.

2 My goodnesse, fortresse, shield, high tower, my saviour als, and he

In whom I trust; who doth subdue my people under me.

3 Lord, what is man that thou takest knowledge of him: or the son of man, that thou makest account of him?

3 Lord, what is man that thou of him thus doest knowledge take?

Or yet the son of man, that thou of him account dost make?

4 Man is like to vanity: his dayes are as a shadow that passeth away.

5 Bow thy heavens, O Lord, and come down: touch the mountains, and they shall smoak.

4 Man is like vanity; his dayes as shadows passe away.

5 Lord bow thy heavens, do thou come down, hils touch, and smoak shall they.

6 Cast forth lightning, and scatter them: shoot out thine arrows, and destroy them.

6 Do thou thy lightnings bright cast forth, by scattring them annoy:

Thine arrows also shoot thou out, and do thou them destroy.

7 Send thine hand from above, rid me and deliver me out of great waters: from the hand of strange children.

7 Do thou thy hand send from above, rid and deliver me

Out of great waters; from the hands of children strange that be.

8 Whose mouth speaketh vanity: and their right hand is a right hand of falshood.

8 Whose mouth doth utter words which are but words of vanity,

And their right hand a right hand is of falsehood utterly.

9 I will sing a new song unto thee, O God: upon a psaltery, and an instrument of ten strings will I sing praises unto thee.

9 A new song Lord, I'le to thee sing upon a Psalterie:

On instrument… that hath ten strings I'le praises sing to thee.

10 It is he that giveth salvation unto kings: who delivereth David his servant from the hurtfull sword.

10 It's he that doth salvation unto great Kings afford,

And who his servant David als saves from the hurtfull sword.

11 Rid me, and deliver me from the hand of strange children, whose mouth speaketh vanity: and their right hand is a right hand of falshood.

11 Rid, save me from strange childrens hands, whose mouth speaks vanity,

And their right hand a right hand is of falsehood utterly.

12 That our sons may be as plants grown up in their youth: that our daughters may be as corner stones, polished after the similitude of a palace.

12 That as the plants our sons may be in youth grown up that are,

Our daughters as the corner stones, drest like a palace rare.

13 That our garners may be full, affording all manner of store: that our sheep may bring forth thousands, and ten thousands in our streets,

13 That full our garners may afford all manner of store for meat,

That thousands forth our sheep may bring, ten thousands in our street.

14 That our oxen may be strong to labour; that there be no breaking in, nor going out: that there be no complaining in our streets.

14 Our oxen be to labour strong, that no inbreaking be,

Nor going out, and that our streets be of complaining free.

15 Happy is that people that is in such a case: yea happy is that people, whose God is the Lord.

15 That people happy is, that is in such a case restord,

Yea happy is that people all whose God is ev'n the Lord.
