A Treatise of Episcopacy, Part 1 · Chapter 5 · Section

The Oppoſers of Prelacy.

To name the Authors that write on the other ſide (or ſome of them) is enough, Viz. 1. Beza, 2. Cartwright, 3. Jacob againſt Downame, 4. Didoclane alias Ca'derwood's Altare Damaſcenum, 5. Learned Parker de Polit. Eccleſiaſt. (not ſo florid as his Treat. of the Croſs, but more nervous) 6. Holy and Learned Paul Baine (Perkin's Succeſſor) his Dioceſan's Tryal, ſhort and nervous, in Syllogiſms. 7. Salmaſius in 2 Books (Apparat. ad primat. P. & Walo. Meſſalinus,) 8. Before him Gerſom Bucer diſſert. de Gubern. Eccleſiae, againſt Downame, large and learned. 9. Jer. Burroughs, in 2 or 3 ſheets, Argumentatively. 10. Prins unbiſhoping of Timothy and Titus, 11. Dr. Baſtwick's Flagellum Pontificis & Epiſcoporum Latialium (oratorical) 12. And ſuch are Miltons. 13. Smectymnuus, that is, Steph. Marſhal, Edw. Calamy, Tho. Young, Mat. Newcomen, and Will. Spurſtow: And a defence of it. 14. The Lond. Miniſters Jus Divinum, Presb. & Miniſt. 15. The Iſle of Wight Papers. 16. Dav. Blondel (that wonder of the world, for Chronology and Hiſtory.) A few leaves of whoſe over-large Collections, Dr. Hammond hath Anſwered, as you have heard, and given his reaſon for going no further, becauſe Blond. extendeth the Miniſterial Parity but to 140. But to us it is not ſo inconſiderable to ſee by what degres the Prelacy roſe, and to ſee it proved ſo copiouſly, that even in after Ages the ſpecies extent and of Churches, and the Order or Species of Presbyters were not altered, notwithſtanding accidental alterations. And therefore I ſhall undertake to bring proofenough of what I now plead for from times much lower than 140, ſuch as I think the impartal will reſt ſatisfied in, though intereſt and preconceived Idea's are ſeldom ſatisfied, or conqueredly a Confutation.
