Gods Arraignment of Hypocrites, Religious tract 1 · Chapter 2 · Part 3 · Section 6

The concluſion of the whole diſputation, declaring by reaſon, the Scriptures, and Church, that God is no author of ſinne.

Exod. 34. God is Iehovah, foreign. God is omnipotent, el ſhaddai, foreign; God is iuſtice it ſelfe, el tſaddick: God is the ſupreame cauſe, and chiefe good, ſhaddiel, foreign. Iehovah, abſolute beeing, cannot produce that which is nothing; his omnipotencie, cannot produce impotencie; his iuſtice, impietie; or ſupreame cauſe, any defect. Sinne is peſhange, defect; gnavou, iniquitie; foreign, a fall from righteouſneſſe; foreign, an aberration from a ſcope: foreign, tranſgreſſion: and for his production, non est foreign, nec foreign, ſed foreign: ſinne is produced from impotencie and imbecilitie, foreign, from meere maſſe and imperſection: therefore not from God, that is foreign, pure act: foreign, power and ſtrength, and therefore free from all imbecilitie: ſhaddai, ſufficient: foreign, deus plenitudinis, a God of fulneſſe: therefore heauen and earth may as ſoone ioyne, as perfection become imperfection, act power, good euill, ſufficiencie deficiencie, God ſinne. Adde the Scriptures: Gen. 1.31. All was very good. Deut. 32.4. Habak. 1.13. Rom. 3.5, 6. Rom. 9.14. The Scripture teacheth, 1. that God wills no ſinne. 2. that he neither commands, or ſtirs vp any to ſinne. 3. that he puniſheth it, grauiſſimè, iuſtiſſimè, certiſſimè, moſt iuſtly, moſt grieuouſly, moſt certenly. 4. that he hates it in that extremitie, that no man was able to beare it, but he that was God and man; no blood able to waſh it away, but the blood of his welbeloued Sonne; no ſacrifice able to pacifie this wrath, but of him in whome onelyonly he ſaid he was wel-pleaſed: no prayers, no teares to preuaile, but onelyonly thoſe that are put vp in this name. Laſtly, eueryevery page in the Bible, is either exhorting to pietie, or threatning plagues and puniſhments vponupon thoſe that will not be reclaimed. Adde to the Scriptures, the Church triumphant, & the quire is foreign, ſanctus, ſanctus, ſanctus, ſacro ſancto Trinitas, holy, holy, holy, moſt holy and ſacred Trinitie; and the Church militant is fighting and praying, that at the length it may be deliuered, not to be with a God of ſinne, but with him that can free them from all ſinne and miſerie. We therefore conclude, he that will not heare the voice of reaſon, is a beaſt; that will not beleeue the Scriptures, is an infidell; that will not heare the Church, is a baſtard. Reaſon ought to conuince vsus, as men; the Scriptures, as Chriſtians; and the Church, as children. We heare the voice of reaſon, that we may confeſſe our Creator; of the Scriptures, that we may louelove our father; and the Church, that we may kiſſe our mother. And God forbid, that euer any of vsus ſhould otherwiſe be minded.
