LECTƲRE XXXIII.
PHILIP. 2. verſe 12, 13.
So make an end of your owne ſaluation with feare and trembling. For it is God that worketh in you &c.
MAke an end of your owne ſaluation] The Rhemiſts read thus out of the vulgar tranſlation, worke your ſaluation; out of which reading that doctrine of ſaluation by workes is by ſome in part maintained. Doth our Apoſtle then in this place teach vsus, that we are to worke our ſaluation, ſo that by the merit of our workes we may obteine ſaluation? Surely in other places of his Epiſtles he teaches vsus a quite contrary doctrine. By grace, ſaith the Apoſtle, are yee ſaued, through faith, and that not of your ſelues; Eph. 2.8.9.it is the gift of God; not of workes, leſt any man ſhould boaſt himſelfe. In which place ſee, I beſeech you, how the Apoſtle ſetteth downe the grounds of our ſaluation. Grace there is the firſt ground of our ſaluation. It is God that iuſtifieth …, & ſaueth vsus: ſaluation is his gift, as the Apoſtle here ſaith. …ut why doth God ſaue vsus? Surely in reſpect of our ſelues we …e ſaued freely by his grace, & according to his mercy: In re…pect of Chriſt indeed we are ſaued by the merits of his death … paſſion. He hath brought vsus with a great price, euen with the …rice of his own precious bloud which he ſhed for the remiſſi…n of our ſins. But we our ſelues hauehave no part in this paiment; … reſpect of our ſelues we are freely through the exceeding …ches of his fauour and grace towards vsus, ſaued. Faith, that is he next occurent in our ſaluation;Rom. 8.3. by grace we are ſaued through …aith. For faith is that hand, whereby we take hold on ſaluation …eached vntounto vsus by grace. Here then, yee ſee, how ſaluation is …oth giuen & taken; giuen by God, & taken by vsus. It is giuen …y God by grace; it is taken by vsus by faith. What then, hauehave …e no part in the purchaſe of our ſaluation? No ſurely; faith whereby we are ſaued, and ſaluation it ſelfe, they are the gift of God. What, hauehave our works no intereſt in the meriting of our ſaluation? No, by grace we are ſaued, through faith, not any way of our ſelues, nor of our works. Why? leſt any man ſhould boaſt himſelfe. For as the ſame Apoſtle reaſoneth;Rom. 4.2. if Abraham were iuſtified by works, he hath wherein to reioyce, but not with God. Why not with God? becauſe to him that worketh, 4.or meriteth by his works, the wages is not counted by fauour, but by debt. And …herefore in another place thus he reaſoneth: if of grace, 11.6.then …ot of works, elſe were no more grace; but if of works, then no …ore of grace, or elſe were worke no more worke. So that when the Apoſtle here ſaith, that by grace we are ſaued, it is euen thereby plaine that we are not ſaued by our works: yet he putteth downe both, ſaying that we are ſaued by grace, not of workes. Againe in his Epiſtle to Tatus; Tit. 3.5.God (ſaith he) our Sauiour hath ſaued vsus, not by the workes of righteouſnes which we had done, but according to his mercy &c. Where againe you ſee the author of our ſaluation is God our Sauiour: the cauſe which moueth God to ſaue vsus, his mercy, not our good works. I might here likewiſe produce the whole diſputation of our Apoſtle in his Epiſtles to the Romanes, and to the Galathians, where at large he diſputeth the queſtion, and plainely reſolueth that we are iuſtified and ſaued freely by grace through faith in Chriſt his bloud, and not by our works wrought according to the as But I purpoſe not any large diſcourſe vponupon this point. By the which already hath beene ſaid, yee ſee how the Apoſtle is other of his Epiſtles teacheth cleane another doctrine th… ſaluation by works. For he teacheth that we are ſaued freely by grace, through faith; not of our ſelues, not of works, … out the works of the law.
How then? is the Apoſtle contrary to himſelfe? Doth …e here did vsus worke our ſaluation, as if by our works we might merit our ſaluation, and elſewhere tell vsus that our ſaluation a not of works, but of grace? God forbid that we ſhould ſo ſ… or thinke. The ſpirit whereby the Apoſtle ſpake both here and elſewhere is alwaies one, and the ſame, and is not changed. He is the ſpirit of truth, and directed the Apoſtle his tongue and pen into all truth; ſo that he is not any where contrary to himſelfe, but here as elſewhere deliuereth the ſame truth. Looke we then a litle into the words, and into the meaning of the words in this place of the Apoſtle. Here then we are to note, 1. that it is not ſimply ſaid, worke your ſaluation, bu… worke out, or finiſh, or make an end of your owne ſaluation. For the word here vſed doth properly ſignifie not ſimply to work… but to worke out, to finiſh, to make an end of a thing. So it is vſed by the Apoſtle where he ſaith, Take vntounto you the whole armor of God, Eph. 6.13.that yee may be able to reſist in the euill day, and hauing … niſhed all things, ſtand faſt. Againe, when it is ſaid, worke … or finiſh or make an end of your owne ſaluation, by ſaluation is not meant, as often elſe where, that price of our high calling, that crowne of immortalitie which at the end of our race is la… vp for him that ouercommeth and continueth vntounto the end, but by ſaluation is meant the whole courſe of a godly life which leadeth vntounto ſaluation. So that when he ſaith, Make an end of your ſaluation, he doth exhort vsus thus much in effect that as we hauehave entred the race of righteouſnes which leadeth vntounto ſaluation, ſo we would runne on in the ſame race vntounto the end, and fully finiſh our courſe in doing ſuch good workes, as God hath ordeined that wee ſhould walke in them.
The thing then which hence is to bee noted from our Apoſtle touching good works, is not the merit of our ſaluati… by our works, but that good works are the way which God …th ordeined vsus to walke in; and in doing whereof he would …ue vsus to finiſh the whole courſe of our life. And this we do …oſt gladly teach eueryevery where, and beat vponupon in all our Ser…ons, and in all our exhortations. OnelyOnly we are carefull to …ch you the truth touching good works; namely, that they …e not the cauſes of, but the way which leadeth vntounto ſaluati…. Saluation, it is the gift of God, giuen vsus by Ieſus Chriſt, …rough faith in his name. So our Sauiour himſelfe telleth vsus …ing, My ſheepe heare my voice, Job 10.27.28.17.2and I giuegive vntounto them eternall …e. For as it is another place; God gaue him power ouer all …ſh, that he ſhould giuegive eternall life to all them that beleeue in him. …luation then is the gift of God, giuen by Chriſt, through …th in him, it is not any way cauſed or merited by our works: …t good works are the way which God hath ordeined vsus to …ke in vntounto ſaluation. And this is plainely proued out of …e places before alledged: for the Apoſtle in the place to the …pheſians, hauing ſet that downe that we are ſaued by grace …rough faith, not of workes, Eph. 2.8.9.10.immediatly after he telleth vsus that … are the Lord his workmanſhip created vntounto good works, which …d hath ordeined that we ſhould walke in them. Likewiſe in the …ace to Titus, hauing ſet that downe that God hath ſaued vsus, Tit. 3.5.…e by the works of righteouſneſſe which we had done, but accordi…g to his mercy; immediatly after he ſpeaketh thus vntounto Titus, 8.is I will that thou ſhouldeſt affirme, that they which hauehave beleeued God, might be carefull to ſhew forth good works. By which pla…es it doth appeare, that howſoeuer our good works are not …e cauſe, or the meanes of our ſaluation, yet they are that way …hich leadeth vntounto ſaluation; yea and that way wherein if …e doe not walke we cannot be ſaued. So ſaith our Sauiour …imſelfe, EueryEvery branch that beareth not fruit in me, Joh. 15.2.the Father ta…eth away, and it is caſt into the fire, and burnt. He doth not ſay, …uery plant that is not planted in me: albeit that likewiſe be …oſt true; but eueryevery branch that beareth not fruit in mee. What fruit? Euen the fruit of the ſpirit, which is in all goodnes, Eph. 5.9.& righteouſnes, & truth, as the Apoſtle ſpeaketh: EueryEvery branch …hat beareth not ſuch fruit in me, he is taken away, and caſt into the fire, and burnt. To like purpoſe is that of the Apoſtle, where he ſaith,Heb. 12.14. Follow peace with all men, and holineſſes, without the which no man ſhall ſee the Lord. And to the like purpoſe now many places might and ordinarily are by vsus produced in our Sermons.
Here then firſt I beſeech you learne to beware of ſuch a traduce vsus, and the doctrine which wee preach, as if by preaching of faith wee had baniſhed good workes, and as if wee were ſo farre from exhorting men to good workes in our Sermons, that either we mention them not, or condemne the… for ſuch there are, that are not aſhamed to ſay, that now we are afraid to handle the doctrine of good workes, that we have preached ſaluation by faith ſo long, that wee hauehave baniſhed good workes out of the Country; that either wee dare … ſpeake of good workes, or if we doe, yet ſo coldly, that as good neuer a whit, as ſo barely and coldly. But beware of ſuch: for hauing their fooliſh hearts ſeduced to beleeue lies, they ſpeake euill of the way of truth, which they know not, and of … whom either they will not at all heare, or with ſuch enchanted eares, that they peruert whatſoeuer things are ſpoken, vntounto their owne deſtruction. Such if they would, they might heare and know that theſe are falſe ſuggeſtions, wherein they ſlander vsus and the truth which wee teach. For we preach both faith and workes, and in all places wee exhort all men that they abound in eueryevery good worke. But why is it that the… thus traduce vsus and our doctrine? Forſooth becauſe we teach that our workes are no cauſes of our ſaluation. And are wee then thus to be traduced becauſe wee tell you the truth? Wee tell you that which the Scriptures hauehave taught vsus, and wee bring with vsus the euidence thereof to confirme that which we teach. Wee dare not challenge any part of our ſaluation a… due vntounto our workes, becauſe all the honour thereof belongeth vntounto the Lord, whoſe free gift it is according to his merciemercy. But the way wherein God hath ordained vsus to walke vntounto ſaluation, we ſay is holineſſe of life, without which no man ſhall ſee the Lord. This the Scriptures teach vsus, this we teach you: beware therefore of ſuch deceiuers as tell you otherwiſe.
Againe, if good workes be the way which God hath ordai… vsus to walke in, and if without holineſſe of life no man … I ſee the Lord, then walke with God, as Henoch did, in ho…eſſe and righeouſneſſe. You beleeue in Chriſt Ieſus: ſhew …th the fruits of your faith: your workes muſt teſtifie your …h, both vntounto your ſelues, and vntounto vsus; for it is a vaine and …ead faith, where no fruits of holineſſe of life doe follow. …ree is knowne by his fruit: a good tree bringeth forth good it, and a corrupt tree bringeth forth euill fruit. As many …re lead by the ſpirit of God, they walke after the ſpirit, and …y bring forth the fruits of the ſpirit. Beloued, God hath …t a time wherein to trie the faith and religion of ſuch as hee …h enabled to doe ſome good vntounto his children Now hee …keth that wee ſhould ſhew forth the fruits of faith, and the …ens of religion, by ſhewing mercy and compaſſion vponupon … poore afflicted and diſtreſſed brethren. Pure religion, Iam. 1.27.and defiled before God, euen the Father, is this, that wee viſit the fa…leſſe and widowes in their aduerſitie, and that wee keepe our …es vnſpotted of the world. If therefore there be any faith, if …re be any religion, if there be any bowels of compaſſion in …, withdraw not your morſels from the poore, nor your re…fe from the needie. According to that where withall God …h bleſſed you, be it ſmall or great, bee ready to doe good …d to diſtribute, laying vp for your ſelues a good foundation heauen. Bleſſed is he whom the Ioines of the poore in their …uerſitie bleſſeth. Generally this I exhort, that yee ſtudie to …e ſoberly, righteouſly, and godly in this preſent world, and glorifie God by the holineſſe of your conuerſation: for …ow this, that whom God hath iuſtified, forgiuing their ſins …d iniquities, them alſo hath hee ſanctified, that they ſerue …n in holineſſe and in righteouſneſſe; and whom hee hath …actified, them alſo, and them only he glorifieth in the king …me of his Sonne. As he then which hath called you is holy, be yee holy in all manner of conuerſation. Hereby yee …ll know that yee are the ſonnes of God, if yee walke as hee …th walked, and keepe his commandements. And this is a …e witneſſe that yee belong not vntounto him, if yee delight in righteouſneſſe, and defile your ſelues with the vncleane conuerſation of the wicked and vngodly. GiueGive therefore a diligence to make you calling and election ſure, ſure (I ſay vntounto your ſelues and to your owne ſoules, by walking in ſuch holineſſe of life as God in Chriſt Ieſus hath ordained your walke in. And thus much of that holy courſe and race of godlineſſe wherein the Apoſtle exhorteth vsus to runne, when he ſaith, Conficite ſalutem, &c.
Make an end, &c.] What it is whereunto the Apoſtle in theſe words doth exhort vsus, in part we hauehave already heal, by the way wherein hee preſcribeth vsus to walke. The … which leadeth vntounto ſaluation being holineſſe of life, the Apoſtle exhorteth vsus to walke in this way, to runne in this … Now it is to be obſerued that the Apoſtle doth not only preſcribe the way which leadeth vntounto ſaluation, and exhort v… walke and runne in that way, but he exhorteth vsus to runne … in the ſame race vntounto the end, and fully to finiſh our courſe… doing ſuch good workes as God hath ordained that we ſhe… walke in. Whence wee are to learne this leſſon, that we … not onelyonly beginne in the ſpirit, and grow forward like… from grace vntounto grace, but wee muſt perſeuere and conti… vntounto the end, that as the beginning and progreſſe were in … ſpirit, ſo the end alſo may bee in the ſpirit, that after the … runne wee may hauehave eternall life. Know ye not (… the Apoſtle) that they which runne in a race, runne all, yet …e receiueth the price? namely he that runneth to the end. So … (ſaith the Apoſtle) that yee may obtaine. Now who are they that ſtriue as they ought to doe, b… they that without fainting and failing in the way hold our vntounto the end? In moſt miſerable caſe then are they that like … Church of Epheſus forſake their firſt louelove, that is, that hauing …ce followed the truth in louelove, and embraced pure religion, …d walked in the paths of righteouſneſſe, doe afterwards fall …ay, and runne themſelues vponupon the rockes, either of errors opinion, or of corruption in life.Luk 9.62. No man (ſaith Chriſt) that …teth his hand to the plough, and looketh backe, is apt to the king…me of God. And the Apoſtle ſaith further,2 Pet. 2.21. that it had beene …ter for them not to hauehave knowne the way of righteouſneſſe, than …er they hauehave knowne it, to turne from the holy commandement …en vntounto them. The reaſon is giuen by the Apoſtle:Heb. 10.26. For if we …ue willingly after that wee hauehave receiued the knowledge of the …th, there remaineth no more ſacrifice for ſinnes, 27.but a fearefull king for of iudgement, and violent fire, which ſhall deuoure the …uerſaries. Take heed therefore, brethren, Heb. 3.12.leſt at any time there in any of you an euill heart, and vnfaithfull, to depart away from … liuing Lord: For wee are made partakers of Chriſt, 14.if we keepe …e vntounto the end the beginning wherewith wee are vpholden. Let runne with patience the race all out that is ſet before vsus. …ur Sauiour Chriſt did ſo before vsus,Heb. 12.2. who for the ioy that was ſet …ore him, endureed the croſſe, and deſpiſed the ſhame. And ſhall …e be weary and faith in our mindes? We ſerue a moſt boun…ull Lord, which giueth vsus all things liberally; let vsus ſerue …en with all that wee hauehave. Wee ſerue a moſt louing Lord, no will not change his fauour for euer; let vsus not ſerue him …e a time, but for euer. And this let vsus know for a ſuretie, …t if at our laſt end, when death doth ſummon vsus to yeeld …r bodied vntounto the graue, and our ſpirits into the hands of …m that gaue them, if then with Paul we can ſay, I hauehave fought good fight, I hauehave finiſhed my courſe, I hauehave kept my faith, wee all finde more ſound ioy and ſure comfort herein, than in I things elſe vnderunder the cope of heauen whatſouer:Mat. 24.13. for he that dureth vntounto the end, he ſhall be ſaued, ſaith our Sauiour Chriſt. …nd againe: He that ouer commeth, Ap. 2.26.and keepeth my workes vntounto …e end, to him will I giuegive power ouer nations; and he ſhall rule them …th a rod of iron, and as the veſſels of a potter ſhall they be broken. 27.…uen as I receiued of my Father, 28.ſo will I giuegive him my morning …urre. Make an end therefore of your owne ſaluation.
Now before wee proceed vntounto the manner how wee are to runne in this race, and to finiſh this courſe, a doubt ariſing from the Apoſtles exhortation is firſt to be reſolued, and anſwered. The Apoſtle as yee ſee, exhorteth vsus to make an end of our owne ſaluation, to runne on the race of righteouſneſs which leadeth vntounto ſaluation, outright vntounto the end. Whe… upon ſome doe gather that our freewill is here called vponupon that is, that wee are not wholly and onelyonly aſſiſted by grace… the way of ſaluation, and in the workes that leade thereunto but that it is in vsus to conſent vntounto the grace which is offered, and that wee of our ſelues, being holpen with grace, by the power of our free will, are able to worke the things that a… good, and acceptable vntounto God. For why elſe (ſay they) do… the Apoſtle exhort vsus to worke out our owne ſaluation, it … vsus there be no power at all to worke? And generally they … conclude, that all admonitions, exhortations, reproc…es, … cepts, promiſes, and threatnings in the Scriptures, are in va… if free will in man be not granted, by the power whereof … may together with grace worke that which is good. The doubt then is, whether this exhortation of our Apoſtle d… not implie that we by the power of our free will are able pa… of our ſelues to make an end of our owne ſaluation, and … runne the race of righteouſneſſe which leadeth to ſaluations The reſolution and anſwer whereunto is, that it doth not at … implie any ſuch thing: which yet more cleerely will appeare, if firſt wee ſhew the friuolouſnes of their whole reaſon, dra… from admonitions, exhortations, &c. in generall, which … this: If it be not (ſay they) in our owne power to doe the thing which is good, and whereunto wee are exhorted and ad… niſhed, &c. then in vaine are admonitions, exhortations, pr… cepts, reproofes, and the like. But ſee the vanitie of their reaſon. Are not admonitions and the like needfull, if it bee … that it be wholly of grace, and no way of our ſelues, to doe thoſe good things whereunto wee are exhorted? It is as if they ſhould ſay, If the increaſe of the earth be wholly the bleſſing of the Lord, then it is not needfull for the husbandman to … his ground: if faith be wholly the gift of God, it is not needfull to come to heare the word preached, &c. for as he giueth corne, and wine, and oile, and all things needfull for this life, b… yet by ſuch meanes as he hath ordained thereunto, and as …his his gift, but yet giuen to vsus by the meanes of hearing word preached; ſo God worketh in vsus both to will and to …e thoſe things whereunto he exhorteth and admoniſheth but by the meanes of ſuch admonitions, exhortations, and like. Howſoeuer then it be not in our owne power to doe good things whereunto wee are exhorted in holy Scrip…e, yet admonitions and exhortations there vſed are there…e needfull, becauſe they are the meanes whereby God wor…h his graces. Againe, if wee looke into the booke of God, …e ſhall eaſily ſee that all theſe things whereunto wee are ex…ted, they are wholly giuen of God by grace in Chriſt Ieſus, are no way of our ſelues. To take a little view thereof: …e Lord by Ioel exhorteth or commandeth, ſaying,Ioel 2.12. Turne vntounto mee, with all your heart, with faſting, weeping, and mour…: and yet Ieremy ſheweth plainly that conuerſion vntounto the …d is wholly the gift of the Lord, when hee thus praieth, …uert thou mee, and I ſhall be conuerted, Ier. 31.18.for thou art the Lord God. Likewiſe our Sauiour Chriſt exhorteth,Mat. 11.28 Come vntounto all yee that are weary and laden, and I will eaſe you: and yet ſheweth plainly, that to come vntounto him is wholly from Father, when he thus ſaith, No man can come vntounto mee, Ioh. 6.44.ex… the Father which hath ſent mee draw him. In another place exhorteth, ſaying, Take heed and beware of couetouſneſſe: Luk. 12.15.to doe thus is wholly from the Lord, as the Prophet ſhewby that his praier vntounto the Lord,Pſ. 119.36 Incline mine heart vntounto thy …nies, and not to couetouſneſſe. Generally the Prophet ex…eth to flie from euill, and to doe the thing that is good:37.27. Iames telleth vsus, that to doe good is wholly from the …d, ſaying, EueryEvery good and perfect gift is from aboue, Iam. 1.17.and com…h downe from the Father of lights, &c. The like is to be ſaid …eproofes.Ma…. 16.14 Chriſt reproued the eleuen of their vnbeleefe hardneſſe of heart: and yet the Prophet ſheweth that it is Lord that taketh away the ſtonie heart out of our body,EZ. 36.26. giueth vsus an heart of fleſh: and the Apoſtle, that faith is gift of the Lord. The like is to be ſaid of all precepts, pro…e…, threatnings, reproofes, admonitions, exhortations, and like in holy Scripture. The Lord vſeth them all as meanes to worke his owne will in vsus, and giueth vntounto vsus whatſoeuer he requireth of vsus, He ſetteth downe lawes and ſtatutes, … as if it were in our owne power to keepe them, but that … may know what to aske of him, and with the Prophet to … O be gratious vntounto thy ſeruant that I may liue and keepe thy … He promiſeth good things to thoſe that will obey him, not … if it lay in vsus to obey him if our ſelues would, but that b… may worke ſuch a will in vsus by his promiſes. He admoniſh… and exhorteth vsus, not as if we were able of our ſelues to w… or do the things, but that ſo we may looke into our own …e… neſſe, and turne vntounto him, and he may heale vsus. You ſee … how vaine their whole reaſon drawne from admonitions, exhortations, and the like in generall is; for that neither … argue any power in vsus of our ſelues to doe good, neither a… they needleſſe and vaine, becauſe they are the meanes wh… by the Lord worketh in vsus both to will, and to doe that whi… we are commanded, and exhorted. Now to the reaſon de… in particular from this exhortation, in briefe I anſwer, that a… beit the Apoſtle exhort vsus to worke out our owne ſaluation yet it doth not follow that it is at all in our power ſo to do. Fo… as it followeth in our Apoſtle, it is God which worketh in … both to will and to doe, euen of his good pleaſure. The Apoſtle therefore exhorteth vsus to make an end of our owne ſaluation, not for that we are able to doe ſo, but to teach … flie vntounto him who worketh in vsus both the will and the de…, euen of his good pleaſure.
Now let vsus make this vſe of that which hath beene ſpok… for the reſoluing of this doubt. It is not in our owne pow… we ſee to flie the euill we are forbidden, to doe the good … are commanded, or to embrace the vertuous and godly … whereunto we are exhorted, but wholy from grace, on…ly from the Lord. So often then as wee heare, or read any p… cepts or lawes in the booke of God, let vsus therein ackno… ledge our duties, and ſeeing it is not in our power to keep them, let vsus flie vntounto our God, and pray to him; Lord g… me grace to do that thou commandeſt, and then comma… mee what thou wilt. So often as we heare or read any pr… miſes, or threatnings, let vsus therein acknowledge our o… frowardneſſe, and ſeeing it is not in vsus to bend at promiſes threatnings, vnleſſe he touch vsus with his holy ſpirit, let vsus … vntounto our God, and praie vntounto him; Lord take from mee … hard and ſtony heart, and giuegive me for it a ſoft and fleſhie …rt, that thy promiſes and thy threatenings, may worke in … obedience to thy will. So often likewiſe as wee heare or …de of admonitions, or exhortations, let vsus therein acknow…ge our owne infermities, and ſeeing we cannot of our ſelues … or do the thing whereunto wee are exhorted, let vsus flie to our God, and pray vntounto him; Lord frame my will accor…g to thy bleſſed will that I may doe what thy will is. And conclude this point, ſeeing we cannot run this raſe where…o the Apoſtle exhorteth vsus, but God muſt worke in vsus both … will and the deede, let vsus flie vntounto our God, and pray vn him, Lord ſanctifie mee with thy holy ſpirit, that by thy …ce guiding mee I may walke in thoſe good workes which …u haſt ordained mee to walke in vntounto my liues end.
