LECTƲRE LXI.
PHILIP. 3. Verſe 12.13.
But I follow if I may comprehend that euen as I am comprehended of Chriſt Ieſus. Brethren I count not my ſelfe that I hauehave atteined.
NOw in that the Apoſtle ſaith, but I follow if I may comprehend, hence our aduerſaries take a proofe of that vncomfortable doctrine o… doubting of our ſaluation; as alſo from that in the former verſe, where he ſaith, if by a… meanes &c. For (ſay they) if S. Paul ceaſed not to labour ſtill, as though he were not ſure to come vntounto the marke without continual endeuour, what ſecuritie may we poore ſinners hauehave of ſaluation by onelyonly faith? And i… S. Paul followed if he might comprehend, as though he were not ſure to comprehend, what ſecuritie may we poore ſinne… hauehave that we ſhall comprehend? No indeed poore wretches, and the poorer and wretcheder for your doubting, if yee gather thus from theſe and the like places, yee can hauehave litle ſecuritie of your ſaluation. S. Paul ceaſed not to labour and endeuour ſtill vntounto the marke; doth it follow herevpon that he was not ſure to come to the marke?2 Reg. 20. When Hezechias was ſo ſore ſicke, was hee not ſure that he ſhould be reſtored to health? Yes he had the Lord his word for it by his Prophet, and for a farther confirmation of his faith he had a ſigne to aſſure it: and yet he ceaſed not to vſe the meanes that God had ordeined for the recouerie of his health. Our Apoſtle in that dangerous voyage towards Rome, Act. 27.23.24.was he not ſure that both he and all his companie ſhould be ſaued from the perill of the waters? Yes the Angell of God had aſſured him both of his owne life, and of all theirs that ſailed with him: yet he ceaſed not to vſe all meanes that they might all come ſafe to land. So for his ſaluation in the day of Chriſt, he knew and was ſure that neither death, nor life, nor Angels, nor principalities, Rom. 8.38.39.…or powers, nor things preſent, nor things to come, nor height, nor …th, nor any other creature ſhould be able to ſeparate him from …e louelove of God in Chriſt Ieſus: Yet he ceaſed not, as here we …e, to labour and endeuour ſtill vntounto the marke, he laboured …e…iring by any meanes to attaine vntounto the reſurrection of the …ead. And ſo generally we ſay that all the faithfull children …f God are & may be by faith in Ieſus Chriſt ſure of their ſalua…on: Yet we ſay that they are to labour to attaine to the know…edge of Chriſt, & of the vertue of his reſurrection &c, wherby …hey may attaine vntounto the reſurrection of the dead. For we …oe not reach or promiſe ſecuritie of ſaluation by onelyonly faith, …ut vntounto thoſe that labour in their calling, and are fruitfull in …ood workes. Which may ſerue to acquit vsus of that careleſſe …ecuritie, and preſumptuous certainty which they ſay we teach …en. We know that as God hath ordeined the end, ſo he hath …rdained the meanes vntounto the end. And therefore we teach, …oth that the children of God may and are to ground the cer…ainety of their ſaluation vponupon the ſweet promiſes of God in Chriſt Ieſus, wherein there can be no vaine preſumption; and …hat they are to labour and endeuour by walking in ſuch good workes as God in Chriſt Ieſus hath ordained them vntounto, to …aue a ſure teſtimonie vntounto themſelues of their ſaluation, which muſt needs baniſh careleſſe ſecuritie. O but they could …e as ſure of their ſaluation, as we thinke our ſelues, if it were …pecially reuealed vntounto them by God, as Ezechias his health …nto him, and Pauls ſafetie vntounto him. I demand then, hauehave …hey no aſſurance from God of their ſaluation? No maruell …hen that they doubt of their ſaluation. But we are ſure of …ur ſaluation,Rom. 8.16.17. becauſe the ſpirit of God doth witnes vntounto our ſpi… that we are the ſonnes of God; and if ſonnes, then alſo heires, …uen the heires of God, and heires annexed with Chriſt. So that we hauehave two witneſſes to aſſure vsus of our ſaluation, Gods ſpirit, & our owne ſpirit, certified by the ſpirit of God. Yea but why doth the Apoſtle ſay, if I may comprehend, if he were ſure to comprehend, and come vntounto the marke. This (if) argues a doubting. Not ſo, but ſome difficultie in the thing which he …arneſtly wiſheth, as alſo it often ſignifieth. I magnifie (ſaith the Apoſtle) mine office, Ro. 11.13.14to try it by any meanes I might procure the… of my fleſh to follow them, and might ſaue ſome of them. Doth th… Apoſtle doubt of ſauing ſome of the Iewe, by his miniſterie becauſe he ſaith, if I might ſaue ſome of them? No, but thereby he ſignifieth his earneſt deſire to doe it, and the difficultie of doing it.Act. 8.22. Againe, Pray God (ſaith Peter vntounto Simon Mag…) that if it be poſſible the thoughts of thy heart may be forgiuen thee. Doth the Apoſtle doubt of Gods mercies to him if he could repent, becauſe he ſaith, if it be poſſible &c. No, but the…eby he giues him to vnderſtand of the difficultie of obtayning pardon for that ſinne, that ſo he might ſee the wickedneſſe of his ſinne. So the Apoſtle here ſaith, that he laboureth if by … meanes he may attaine &c, and that he followeth if he may co… prehend, not that he doubteth of attaining to the glorious reſurrection of the dead, or of comprehending; but thereby he ſignifieth his earneſt deſire to attaine vntounto it, and withall the difficultie of attaining vntounto it.2 Tim. 2.5. For as the Apoſtle ſaith … where, No man is crowned except he ſtriue lawfully, .i. except he doe and endure whatſoeuer is to be done and ſuffered vntill he come to his races end. He muſt deuoure all difficulties that will hauehave the crowne in that day. And theſe difficulties increaſed the Apoſtle his deſire, ſo that he laboured if hee might attaine, and followed if he might comprehend. Th… then yee ſee that this place maketh nothing for that vncomfortable doubting of our ſaluation which they labour to perſwade.
Nay, to ſpeake in one word vntounto the whole point, the whole ſtreame of the ſcriptures maketh againſt this doubting, & for the certainty of our ſaluation.Iob 19.25.26.27. I am ſure (ſaith Iob) th… my redeemer liueth, & he ſhall ſtand he laſt on the earth; & though after my skin wormes deſtroy this bodie, yet ſhall I ſee God in my fleſh; whom I my ſelfe ſhall ſee, and mine eyes ſhall behold, and non… other for me. 2 Tim. 4.8.So Paul, Henceforth (ſaith he) is laid vp for me… the crowne of righteouſneſſe, which the Lord ſhall giuegive me at th… day, and not to me onelyonly, but vntounto all them alſo that louelove his appearing. What? To him onelyonly? Nay (ſaith he) but to all them alſo that louelove his appearing. Marke then the ground wherevpon he builds the certainety of ſaluation: euen vponupon that ground which is common to him with all the faithfull, the …ue of God in Chriſt Ieſus. So that by the power of the ſame …rit, and vponupon the ſame ground that Iob, and Paul aſſured …emſelues of their ſaluation, may all the faithfull children of …od aſſure themſelues of their ſaluation. Againe, doth not …e holy Ghoſt define Faith to be the ground of things which are …ped for, the euidence of things that are not ſeene, a full aſſurance, … aſſurance without wauering, the anchor of the ſoule both ſure …d ſtedfast? It is cleare. And is it not as cleare that we may …rtainely know that we hauehave faith?Rhem. in 2 Cor. 13.5. The Rhemiſts themſelues … knowledge it vponupon that place of the Apoſtle, Proue your …ues whether yee are in the faith. And may we not then aſ…e our ſelues of our ſaluation? Verily, verily, Joh. 5.24.ſaith our Saui…r Chriſt, he that heareth my word, and beleeueth in him that … me hath euerlaſting life, and ſhall not come into condemnation, … hath paſſed from death vntounto life. Where euerlaſting ſalua…n is aſſured vntounto him that beleeueth, as ſurely as if he were …eady in full poſſeſſion of it. Yea euerlaſting ſaluation is …ſured vntounto him that loueth the brethren, as ſurely as if he …ere already in full poſſeſſion of it, as S. Iohn witneſſeth,1 Ioh. 3.14. where … ſaith, we know that we are tranſlated from death vntounto life, be…uſe we louelove the brethren. Infinite almoſt are the places which …ainely ſhew that we may and ought to aſſure our ſelues of …r ſaluation.
I grant that euen the beſt of Gods children oftentimes doe …gger, and wauer, and doubt, and hauehave diuers ſpices and …arkles of infidelitie, and diſtruſt ariſing in their hearts. For … long as we liue both our knowledge, and our louelove, and …r faith, and our hope, and the beſt graces that we hauehave are …nely in part, and vnperfect: our knowledge not without …me mixture of ignorance, our louelove not without ſome mix…re of hatred, our faith not without ſome mixture of infide…tie, our hope not without ſome mixture of diſtruſt. But this … it that we teach, that the children of God may and ought … aſſure themſelues of their ſaluation. Indeed if we looke …pon our ſelues, our owne workes, and our owne worthineſſe, …e may iuſtly doubt of our ſaluation, hauing in our ſelues de…rued euerlaſting damnation: But the ground and foundation of the certainety of our hope is the ſure promiſe of Go… in Chriſt Ieſus, who hath promiſed in his word eternall l… to all them that beleeue in his name. We looke not on o… ſelues, but we looke on him that hath promiſed, euen as Abraham did whoſe faith we are to follow: of whom it is ſaid, th… he neither did conſider his owne bodie which was now dead, Rom. 4.19.being … moſt an hundreth yeares old, neither the deadneſſe of Sarahs …, neither did he doubt of the promiſe through vnbeleefe (w… note by the way how doubting is termed vnbeleefe,20.) but … ſtrengthned in the faith, and gaue glory to God, being fu…y aſſured that he which had promiſed, 21.was alſo able to doe it. He then being faithfull which hath promiſed ſaluation to all them that beleeue in his name, we may and ought to be ſure of our ſaluation. To conclude therfore this point, beware leſt at any time … be deceiued by ſuch as out of this, or the like places of ſcripture would perſwade you that ye ought to doubt of your ſaluation. Neither this, nor any other place makes for it, but the whole courſe of Scripture makes againſt it. Let vsus witho… Apoſtle labour if by any meanes we may attaine &c. and let … follow if we may comprehend, not doubting of it, but running through all difficulties euen with all eagreneſſe. Let vsus … lawfully, and as we ought to doe that we may be crowned: and let vsus keepe faſt the profeſſion of our hope without wa…ering, becauſe he is faithfull that hath promiſed.
Now in that he addeth, if I may comprehend euen as I … comprehended of Chriſt Ieſus, the Apoſtle ſignifieth his earn… deſire to come vntounto the perfect knowledge of Chriſt Ieſus, that he may know fully euen all the riches of wiſdome, and knowledge, and righteouſneſſe, and ſaluation that are hid… him. For he ſaith that he followeth and earneſtly laboure… … comprehend the knowledge of Chriſt Ieſus, euen as he … comprehended and knowne of Chriſt Ieſus, which is mo… perfectly.Pſal. 139.1.2.3.12.14.15. For he knoweth his downe-ſitting, and vpriſing, he v… derſtandeth his thoughts a farre of: he is about his path, and a… his bed, and ſpieth out all his waies; there is not a word a … tongue but he knowes it wholly: he hath poſſeſſed his reines, & c… red him in his mothers wombe: his eyes did ſee him when he wa… … without forme, and in his booke were all his members written … day by day were faſhioned when as yet there was none of them. …he climbe vp into heauen, if he lye downe in hell, if he take …e wings of the morning, and remaine in the vttermoſt parts … the ſea, if he ſay the darkneſſe ſhall hide him, ſtill he know…h him altogether. Yea he ſanctifieth him throughout, in ſpirit, …d ſoule, and bodie, and ſo likewiſe knowes him throughout, …en moſt perfectly. And euen ſuch a perfit knowledge …ould he hauehave of Chriſt Ieſus, that he might be able to com…ehend with all Saints what is the bredth, and length, and depth, … height of him, and that he might know the louelove of Chriſt which …aſſeth knowledge, that ſo he might be filled with all fulneſſe of …od. Whence all Chriſtians are leſſoned, to labour and ſtriue … the whole courſe of their life vntounto perfection, vntounto perfe…tion in the knowledge of Chriſt, vntounto perfection in obedi…nce vntounto Chriſt, vntounto the perfection of mortification in …heir earthly members by the vertue of Chriſt his death, …nd vntounto the perfection of holineſſe and righteouſneſſe by …he vertue of Chriſt his reſurrection. True it is that wee …annot attaine vntounto perfection in any of theſe things, in …he knowledge of Chriſt, or in obedience vntounto his will, …r in dying vntounto ſinne, or in liuing vntounto God. The Apoſtle …ould not; and how then ſhould wee, being compaſſed with no fewer infirmities then he was, and being ſtrength…ned with no more powerfull aſſiſtance of the ſpirit then he was? But yet we are to labour that our vnderſtandings may bee perfectly inſtructed in all wiſdome and ſpirituall …nderſtanding, that our wills may be perfectly conformed vntounto Gods will, that our affections and the luſts of our fleſh may be perfectly ſubdued vntounto the ſpirit, and that we may be perfectly renued in the ſpirit of our mindes. So we are exhorted when it is ſaid,Mat. 5.48. Bee yee perfit as your Father which is in heauen is perfit: and againe, when it is ſaid, Bee yee holy, for I am holy; 1 Pet. 1.15.bee yee holy euen in all manner of conuerſation. And to the ſame purpoſe it is ſaid, That eueryevery man that hath hope in IESVS CHRIST purgeth himſelfe, euen as hee is pure. 1 Ioh. 3.3.In all which places the Holy Ghoſt doth not ſhew vntounto vsus what perfection, or holineſſe, or puritie is in vsus, euen the beſt of vsus, but that we ſhould labour and ſtriue vntounto this that we may … perfit as God is perfit, holy as God is holy, pure as God i… pure. The reaſon is, becauſe God hath choſen vsus in Chr… Ieſus that we ſhould be holy and without blame before him i… lo… ▪ We muſt not therefore ſtand at a ſtay,Eph. 1.4. or thinke it enough that we are before many of our brethren in knowledge, … righteouſneſſe, or holineſſe, but as it is ſaid of Chriſt Ieſus … he increaſed in wiſdome, and ſtature, and in fauour with God … men; ſo we muſt increaſe and grow daily from knowledge … knowledge, from ſtrength vntounto ſtrength, from grace vntounto gr… vntill we become perfit men in Chriſt Ieſus.
But is it not with vsus as it was with the ſtiffe-necked Iewes? Moſes and the Prophets ceaſed not to teach them out of the law what they ſhould doe, but they would not hearken … obey: now the Miniſters of Chriſt Ieſus, and diſpenſers of holy myſteries teach vsus out of the Law, and Prophets, out of the holy word of life what we ſhould doe; but who do… heare or obey? If we ſhould ſeeke one by one to finde the count, ſhould we finde one man of a thouſand that followe… after perfection in the knowledge of Chriſt, and obedience to his will, or that hungreth in his ſoule to grow from grace to grace till he be fulfilled with knowledge of his will is all wiſdome, and ſpirituall vnderſtanding? We grow indeed…, and we grow to perfection: but thus, we grow from bad to worſe, and we come to perfection in ſinne and wickedneſſe Men neuer more skilfull to deceiue, to oppreſſe, to circumuent one another, and vnderunder the hypocriticall ſhew of holineſſe to practiſe all kinde of wickedneſſe. He that was vniuſt is vniuſt ſtill, and he that was filthy is filthy ſtill: he that ſtole ſtealeth more, he that gaue his money vponupon vſurie giueth more: Yea he that went vp with vsus vntounto the houſe of God he will goe vp no more, he that feared an oath will now ſweare luſtily, and he that ſeemed to make ſome conſcience of his wayes is now quite turned out of the way. So that our growing is from bad to worſe, and which is worſe, from better to worſe. Inſomuch that the Lord may ſeeme to hauehave dealt with vsus as he dealt with thoſe of whom the Apoſtle writeth to the Romanes, Rom. 1.28.as we hauehave not regarded to know God, ſo he hath deliuered vsus vp vntounto a reprobate minde. We hauehave deſpiſed the riches … his bountifulneſſe, and patience, and long ſuffering, not …ng that the bountifulneſſe of God leadeth vsus to repentance, Rom. 2.4.…d therefore he hath giuen vsus vp to the hardneſſe of our heart, that …erour heart which cannot repent we might heape vntounto our ſelues …ath againſt the day of wrath, 5.and of the declaration of the iust …dgement of God. Or if there be any of vsus that goe not thus …ckward as we hauehave ſaid, yet how many of vsus is there that go…h forward, and increaſeth with the increaſing of God? It …y be that ſome of vsus thinke we hauehave ſome knowledge of Chriſt, that we walke in ſome obedience vntounto his will, that …e are not vniuſt, adulterers, ſwearers, extortioners as others, …d that we are before many of our brethren for many good …aces. But doe we not euen ſit vsus downe, and content our …lues with that we hauehave, and neuer ſeeke for more? Or if we …ke with the yong man in the Goſpell, what lacke I yet, Mat. 19.20is it …ot as he did, thinking that all is well, we need no more? Why …ſe is it that we will not come vntounto the houſe of God to heare …is word? The cry is inceſſantly taken vp, Ho, Eſa. 55.1.eueryevery one that …rſteth, come yee to the waters, and yee that hauehave no ſiluer, come, …y, and eat. But we will not heare the voice of the charmer charme … neuer ſo wiſely. We know Chriſt well enough, or elſe we …ould be ſorry. Againe, why elſe is it that we come no faſter …rward in the practiſe of denying vngodlineſſe and worldly …ſts, and liuing ſoberly, and righteouſly, and godly in this …reſent world? We heare the retrait from ſinne and wicked…eſſe, and the alarme vntounto holineſſe and righteouſneſſe often …unding in our eares: but we thinke they are things that doe …ot concerne vsus, we poſte ouer ſuch things to ſuch and ſuch …en, we would willingly mend if we knew any thing amiſſe, …nd in the meane time we wiſh that we may keepe our ſelues as …e are. Thus if we doe not goe backward, yet we doe not …oe forward. But let vsus know that not to increaſe in the know…edge of Chriſt is to decreaſe, and not to goe forward in the …way of godlineſſe is to goe backward. Yea whatſoeuer con…eit we hauehave of our knowledge, and of our obedience, we are …rre from either if we doe not deſire and long in our very …oules to increaſe and grow forward in either. If we know Chriſt, our hearts will be enflamed daily more and more … encreaſe in the knowledge of Chriſt, and if we hauehave begun… truely to obey Chriſt, we will go forward and make an end … our ſaluation with feare and trembling. For hereby we know that we know Chriſt, and walke in his feare, if we feele in our ſelues a longing deſire to grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Sauiour Chriſt Ieſus.
So many of vsus therefore as deſire to hauehave this teſtimon… vntounto our owne ſoules that we know Chriſt in ſome meaſure, and that we are truely partakers of the grace of Chriſt, let … follow after perfection, and let vsus grow from grace to gr… and from knowledge to knowledge till wee come vntounto the meaſure of the age of the fulneſſe of Chriſt. Let vsus neither quench the ſpirit to go backward, nor be wearie of wel doing to ſtand at a ſtay, but let vsus labour to encreaſe in eueryevery good grace of God with the encreaſing of God. As wee grow … yeares ſo let vsus labour to grow in grace, and as we grow in other knowledge ſo let vsus ſtriue to grow in the knowledge of Chriſt Ieſus. If we follow after perfection, though it bee in great imperfection, it is the worke of God, and accepted with God. And if the conſideration of our Imperfections ſet … vntounto God by earneſt praier vntounto him that hee will perfit… praiſe in our weakneſſe, and encreaſe the graces of his holy ſpirit in vsus, it is a ſure token vntounto vsus of our ſpirituall growth in Chriſt Ieſus. Whatſoeuer therefore our imperfection be … not that trouble vsus. If we hauehave not already attained vntounto it, or be already perfit, let vsus with our Apoſtle follow if we may comprehend it, euen as we are comprehended of Chriſt Ieſus: and as the Apoſtle Peter in the end of his latter Epiſtle exhorteth them vntounto whom he wrote,2 Pet. 3.18. Let vsus growing in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Sauiour Chriſt Ieſus. It followeth.
Brethren I count] That which followeth in theſe two … verſes is in ſubſtance the very ſame with that in the form… verſe, amplified by a continuall allegory taken from the … ner of them that runne in a race, but conſiſting of the ſame members, to wit, an acknowledgement of his owne imperfection in the knowledge of Chriſt, and a ſignification of his …agre purſuit after perfection. The former member here is in ſubſtance the ſame with the former member of the former verſe. Only a louing compellation of them by the name of brethren is here added, brethren, I count not; and the manner of ſpeech is ſomewhat here altered, in that he ſaith, I count not my ſelfe that I hauehave attained to it.
In that he calleth them brethren, I note the Apoſtles kinde dealing with the Philippians to winne them from that error …herewith they were ſomewhat entangled, though not bewitched and ſeduced by the falſe Teachers. Whence I obſerue a neceſſarie dutie of a good Miniſter, which is to winne them that are falling into any error from their error by the ſpirit of meekneſſe. Brethren, ſaith the Apoſtle,Gal. 6.1. if any man be fallen by occaſion into any fault, ye which are ſpirituall, reſtore ſuch a one with the ſpirit of meekneſſe. The ſame courſe is to be taken with them that are falling into any error. They are not to be ſoothed vp or flatered in their error, but they are to be reclaimed with all kindneſſe and mildneſſe. As therefore is the man and his fault, ſo is he to be dealt withall.Pro. 17.10.26.3. A reproofe entreth more …nto him that hath vnderſtanding, then an hundreth ſtripes into a foole. Gods children therefore are gently to be dealt withall, but a rod belongeth to the fooles backe. Some wounds muſt hauehave wine, ſome oyle, ſome wine and oyle powred into them. And therefore the Apoſtle had learned ſometime to come with a rodde, and ſometimes in the ſpirit of meekneſſe, ſometimes beſeeching by the tender mercies of God, and ſometimes deliuering vntounto Sathan, ſometimes with beloued Brethren, and ſometimes with fooliſh Galatians. Let not therefore this …or the like places deceiue any to thinke that God is onelyonly in the ſoft and ſtill voice of brethren; but let eueryevery Miniſter of Chriſt learne when to reproue ſharply, and when to deale more mildly, and as he ſeeth it expedient ſo let him come with a rodde, or in the ſpirit of meekneſſe. But I hauehave had occaſion heretofore, and ſhall hauehave hereafter to ſpeake of this point.
Againe that hee ſaith, I count not my ſelfe &c. I note the Apoſtles moſt wiſe taxing of the Philippians as hauing ſuffered themſelues ſomewhat to be perſwaded that they had already atteined to the perfect knowledge of Chriſt, and were now to ioyne vntounto it the workes of the law. For he doth not ſay vntounto them, they among you that count themſelues that they hauehave attained to perfection in the knowledge of Chriſt they are ſhamefully deceiued; But, ſaith he, I your Apoſtle, by wh… ye were brought to the knowledge and obedience of Chriſt, I count not my ſelfe to hauehave attained to the perfect knowledge of Chriſt; ſo gently admoniſhing them that they that count themſelues perfit take heed that they doe not deceiue themſelues: whence I obſerue the wiſedome that is required in noting of faults, which is, that faults are not alwaies to bee noted plainely by their names, but ſometimes they are onelyonly wiſely to bee inſinuated. When the ſcholar hath a good opinion of himſelfe, and thinkes that he knowes all things, the Maſter doth not alwaies repreſſe his arrogancie by telling him that hee doth not know many things whereof hee vainely boaſteth, but ſometimes he ſaith vntounto him, well I count not my ſelfe that I hauehave attained to the knowledge of all things, and ſo by his owne example bringeth his ſcholar to a more modeſt conce… of himſelfe. Euen ſo the Miniſter of Chriſt Ieſus labouring to repreſſe ſuch faults as doe ariſe is not alwaies plainely to direct his ſpeech vntounto them that offend, and barely to note their faults, but ſometimes he is onelyonly to propoſe himſelfe as a patterne whereby they may reforme themſelues. And herein is great wiſedome in the miniſter required, to know when plainely to note, and when onelyonly to inſinuate ſuch faults as are to be reformed. And this wiſedome they want that either cenſure all men, and all faults alike, or note them and their faults more ſharply, whom, and whoſe faults they ſhould touch with more mildneſſe. And how much this wiſedome is wanting might eaſily be ſhewed, if I might in this place as fitly ſpeake of it as there is iuſt and great occaſion to ſpeake of it. But becauſe it doth not much concerne you vntounto wh… my ſpeech is wholly directed I paſſe it ouer, and proceed vntounto the next point.
