Chap. VII. Of the third cauſe that maketh a worldly man to feare Death, which is the want of Faith and Hope. And the remedie againſt the ſame.
That Faith is grounded vponupon the faithfull promiſe of Almightie God and of the excellent effects of the ſame. Sect. I
VErelie verelie I ſaie vntounto you (ſaith Chriſt) that ye ſhall weepe and lament, and the world ſhall reioice; and ye ſhall ſorrow, a Iohn 16.20but your ſorrow ſhall be turned to ioy. Who would not haſten to ioy, and who would not wiſh to want ſorrow?b22 I will ſee you againe, and your hearts ſhall reioice, and your ioy shall no man take from you. Wherfore ſeeing to ſee Chriſt, is to reioyce, and ſeeing we can hauehave no perfect ioy vntil we ſee Chriſt; what blindneſſe, and blockiſhneſſe, yea, what madneſſe is it, to louelove affliction, and to be ſo much addicted vntounto miſerie and worldly teares; and not rather to haſten to that ioy that ſhall neuer be taken from vsus? Yet this commeth to paſſe, becauſe we want Faith and Hope, becauſe we beleeue not thoſe things to be true, which God promiſeth, thereby making Godc1. Tim. 2 (who cannot lie) to be falſe andd1. Iohn 5.10 a lier, like our ſelues. If a graue, laudable, and honeſt Man, ſhould promiſe vsus anie thing, ſtaitway we ſhould beleeue him, neither would we think our ſelues to be deceiued by him, who we knew, would ſtand to his tackles, and performe his promiſes. Now God ſpeaketh to vsus, and dare we (faithleſſe wretches) with an infidel-like & vnconſtant mind doubt of the performance and trueth of his promiſes?eRom. 3.4. God forbid, yea, let God be true, all men a liar. So then God promiſeth vsus (when we depart this life) immortalitie and eternitie: and wil we doubt of it? This is to be altogither ignorant of God, this is to offend Chriſt the Lord and Maiſter of all beleeuers, with the ſin of incredulitie, and this is, being in the church, and in the houſe of faith, to forſake the church, and to denie the Faith. Well was the Prophet affected, who ſaith:fPſalme 42.1 As the Hart braieth after the riuers of water, ſo panteth my ſoule after thee, O God: g2My ſoule thirſteth for God, euen for the liuing God when shall I come and appeare before the preſence of God? hPſalme 73.25.Whom hauehave I in heauen but thee, and I hauehave deſired none in the earth with thee? i26My fleſh faileth, and mine heart alſo, but God is the ſtrength of mine heart, and my portion for euer. And therefore in a full aſſurance and perſwaſion of the louelove of God towards him, and of the truth of his promiſes, he breaketh out in admiration, ſaying:kPſalme 16.11 Thou wilt ſhew me the path of life, in thy preſence is the fulneſſe of ioy, and at thy right hand there are pleaſures for euermore. lPſalme 17.15I will behold thy face in righteouſneſſe, and when I awake I shall be ſatisfied with thine image. Finally, Fayth obtaineth earthly bleſſings and benefites vntounto the wicked, as the faith of Elijah obtained rain for wicked Achab and other infidells. How then can we want faith, without which we are neither regenerated, iuſtified, nor ſaued?mHebr. 11.6. without Faith it is impoſſible to pleaſe God. Out of Faith iſſueth Hope,Hope what it is , which is a preſent feeling of the thing we long for; and this nouriſheth and preſerueth faith to withſtand any reſiſtance, & to reuince any oppoſitiō that ſhalbe againſt vsus. Hope cannot be ſeperated from Faith,The affinitie of Hope with Faith. yea, ſuch as our Faith is, ſuch is our Hope. If we hauehave no Faith, we hauehave no Hope, and a wauering faith, maketh a blind hope; if our faith be firme, ſo will our hope be. Faith is an aſſurance of the louelove of God in Chriſt: hope is a conſtant apprehenſion and feeling of the ioy and glory, which by that louelove ſhall be giuen vntounto vsus. If we be aſſured that God loueth vsus, which proceedeth of faith, ſo are we alſo aſſured that god wil ſaue & glorifie vsus, which commeth of hope. Remedies againſt the weakeneſſe of Faith. Sect. II
THe Lord like a moſt bountiful and magnificent King, will be angrie if any man will aske a ſmall thing at his handes: becauſe (ſuch is his magnificence) hee had rather giuegive things of great worth then of ſmall value: his goodneſſe is infinite, heaWiſd. 11.21 loueth al the things that are, and hateth none of them what he hath made: bWiſd. 11.23he loueth the ſoules of men. Wherevpon it commeth to paſſe, that vve can no ſooner wiſh for eternal life and true felicity, but he is as ready, (yea, and much readier then a man can wiſh) to giuegive and beſtow the ſame vppon vsus. Why then ſhuld we miſtruſt our ſaluation, or doubt of the ſweet promiſes of God in Chriſt reuealed in his holy worde? That we might be happie, he created vsus of nothing, and being loſt, he reſtored vsus to life by the death of his beſt Beloued, and only begotten Son: and being redeemed (c1.
