Against Symbolizing with Antichrist in Ceremonies, Part · Chapter 2 · Section 29 [i.e. 28]
#Sect. 29. No outward ſigne ought to be added by the Church to Chriſtes inſtitution.
MY ſecond inſtance is in the addition of the water to the wine of the Supper. For as much as againſt this addition, and in it the former rule hath euer ben kept (to wit) that no outward ſigne muſt be added by the Church to Chriſtes inſtitution. Againſt itaTho. Mort apolog. part 1. cap. 78. Maiſter Morton alleadgeth a Canon out of a Synode at Orleans that runneth thus: Nullus in oblationibus ſacri calicis niſi quod ex fructu ſacrae viniae ſperatur & hoc ſine aqua mixium offerre praeſamat; quia ſacrilegium iudicatur aliud offerre quam quod in mandatis ſacratiſsimis ſaluator inſtituit. What edition Mr. Morton followeth I knowe not, but the doctrine is acknowledged by our Church, which holdeth the adding of the water to be againſt the inſtitutiō, as the Council of Trent interpreteth. And what reaſon then to adde the Croſſe to Baptiſme▪ bConcil. Trident. ſeſſ. 22. can. 9.The water of the Supper is more auncient, the Croſſe in Baptiſme yonger. Chriſt vſed the water in the Supper by all probabilitie, the Croſſe hee vſed neuer in all certaintie. The water was mixt before the ſolemnitie of the Supper began, the Croſſe is adioyned in the cheeſe place of it. The water was added for civill vſe to alay the wine at firſt; the Croſſe was added for vſe religious, yea Sacramentall. The water was neuer abuſed but to ſignification only, the Croſſe euen to Idolatrous operation. The water of the Supper became one with the wine, the Croſſe remayneth ſtill a ſigne by it ſelfe, and that of a diuerſe kinde. If then our Church hath yet aboliſhed the water from the wine of the Supper, leaſt it ſhould heare from the former councill. Thou that abhorreſt Idols committeſt thou ſacriledg? much more ſhould the Croſſe be remoued from the water of Baptiſme, Rom. 2.22.ſeeing in the addition therof, ther is both ſacriledge cōmitted (as the former Council cenſureth) and an Idoll bleſt beſides. And the dutie of not adding hath ben ſeuerely kept by thoſe who hauehave added this water, for that theycHieron. in Marc. c. 14 Damaſ. li. 4 de fid. c. 14. hold it inſtituted by Chriſt, propheſied of by Salomon, dCypr. cpiſt 48. & de conſecrat. diſtinct. 2. cap. 2.bibite ex vino quod miſcui vobis, and commended for euer to be vſed in the Sacraments of Chriſts death, becauſe it flowed forth frō eIbid Martin. Councill of Orleans in the cōmon edition cōmandeth this mixture vponupon the verie ſame reaſon that is in the Council, which Mr Morton alledged before, to wit, becauſe it is ſacriledg to vſe any outward ſigne in the Supper which is not ordained by Chriſt. So the Coūcil ofgHipponen. Concil. can. 25. Hippo &hConcil. Carthag. 3 can. 24. Carthage cōmandeth this mixture & no more, vt in ſacramentis nihil aliud offeratur quam quod Dominus tradidit. So the decree oflIulii. 1. decret. 7. So the Councill of Cōſtantinople cōmandeth this mixture to the Armenians, becauſe nothing muſt be diminiſhed nor added to thatnSynod. 6. in Trull. can. 32. Quod Dominus tradidit. Laſt of all, So the Councill ofoWormatienſ. Concil. can. 4. Wormes held in the yeare 868. cōmandeth this mixture & no more, becauſe aliud offerri non debet quam quod Christus ſub hoc Sacramento praebuiſſe cognoſcimus. My third inſtance is in the honnie added to the wine of the Supper: like to which addition was the honny added to the water of Baptiſme, and put into the mouth of the infant baptized. Theſe are aspTertul. de coron. milit Baron, ann. 294. ancient as the Croſſe, and they were neuer ſo much abuſed, neither are they now likely to doe like hurt. Yet aqAntiſiodorenſ. Concil. can. 8. Exod. Coūcil thought the honny added to the wine vnlawful, becauſe our L. ordained it not, & our own Church hath caſt out the other. Moſes forbad hony in everie ſacrifice. Wherfore? to ſhut out all humane additions, which are honny-ſweet to his carnall wiſdome, in which reliſhe the croſſe exceedeth all his fellowes. My fourth inſtance is in the addition of the milke to the L. ſupper; like to which was the milke added to the water in Baptiſme, and put into the mouth of the partie baptized. This was asrTertul. de coron. milis ancient as the croſſe, & it was neuer ſo much abuſed, & it hath his analogie of ſignification out of the ſcripture. it was giuen to the baptizedsHieron. epiſt. cont. Bellarmine) to the baptized in Dominica in albis the next Sunday after Eaſter. Howbeit for all this, we hauehave turned it headlong out of Baptiſme, as the CouncillsuBracarenſ. 3. cap. 1. Iulii. 1. decret. 7. caſhiered it out of the ſupper, becauſe the L. ordained it not. This is in thewDecret. p. 3. de conſecrat. diſtin. 2. cap. 7. Canon-law expreſt at large quam hoc ſit, &c. how contrarie this is to the Apoſtolicall doctrine, it will not be difficult to proue by the fact of the truth it ſelf, by whom the Sacraments are ordained. For whē the Mr of the truth cōmended the true ſacrifice of our ſaluation to his Diſciples, we know he gaue thē in this Sacrament no milke but bread only & the cuppe. let therfore milk ceaſe to be offred, becauſe a manifeſt & evident example of evangelical truth hath ſhined forth, that beſides bread & wine it is not lawfull to offer any thing elſe. We hauehave here that the inſtitution muſt be kept pure frō al additiō of any ſignes, & that a ſigne added is contrary to the inſtitution. The very memory is abhorred of thexLambert. Dane. in Auguſt. de haereſ. c. 64 Barſaniani and Semidalitae, for that inſteed of bread they vſed meale, euen as others are vtterly cōdemned for bringingyConcil. The Greek church now at Cōſtantino. crumbleth the bread into the wine, & ſo take both in a ſpone together. If theſe ſin through defect againſt the complement of the Sacrament, iudge (then) whether the croſſe ſinneth not in exceſſe, added for a further complement to the ſame? My laſt inſtance is in the bread & cheeſe, which thezEpiphan. in haereſ. 49. Auguſt. de haereſ. cap. 28. Artotyritae brought into the Supper vponupon an imitation of auncient times when the fruites of the earth & the fruits of the cattell were wont to be offered to the Lord; for they brought the cheefe for the fruit of the cattell, & the bread for the fruite of the earth. We plead antiquitie for the croſſe in Baptiſm, bread & cheeſe pretēd as much for a place in the ſupper. Notwithſtanding this pretence, the bread and cheeſe are ſent packing, becauſe not commaundedaConrad. Lutzenburg. Catolog. haeres. in verb.
