Against Symbolizing with Antichrist in Ceremonies, Part · Chapter 1 · Section 20
#Sect. 20. Our ſecond Oppoſite different why our Croſſe not the ſame with the Papiſts, ſꝪ. becauſe ours is made at the fount only: theirs at the Church doore alſo.
THe ſecond difference betweene the popiſh Croſſe and ours may bee termed circumſtantiall. It pleadeth our Croſſe is not the ſame, becauſe made at the font only wheras Papiſts make it at the Church-doore alſo: & ours is not daubde, with oyle on the childes forehead, as their Croſſe was daubde, and is. Firſt, accept of this difference and iuſtifie the popiſh ceremonies from being Iewiſh, ſith the ſame (if not greater) may be euen alleadged for them: as that theaDurand. rational. lib. 4. ca. 8. Secondly, there be as great differences as this in many Croſſes, which neuer yet were held ſufficient to vary any common caſe, that is incident vntounto the Croſſe. The Croſſe which ChriſtiansdEuſeb. hiſtor. li. 8. cap. 7. made with their armes, placed a twhart, when the Panthers were now ready to deuoure them: the Croſſe which the auncient communicants made with their hands, when being to receiue the bread of the ſupper, they did eCyril. Thirdly, make good theſe differences of former circumſtances, betweene the popiſh Croſſe and ours, and then our Croſſe will not bee the Fathers Croſſe, as it is boaſted and giuen forth. For our Croſſe is after Baptiſme (men ſay) whereas the Croſſe of the auncient Fathers, was both before and after, the water euenpWolfgan. Lazins in Carol. magn. epiſt ad alcuin. many times repeated. Fourthly, ſuch differences of circumſtance make no difference els where, and why then ſhould they heere? The Paſſeouer in Canaan had neither ſhoes on the feet, nor girdle about the loynes, nor ſtaffe in the hand, as the Paſſeouer in Aegypt had, and yet it was the very ſame Sacrament. Our Lords ſupper is in the forenoone and with the leauened bread whereas Chriſt was after ſupper, with bread vnleauened, yet the Sacraments be not diuerſe.
