Meditations and Disquisitions Upon Seven Psalms of David, Text 3
THE THIRTIE EIGHTH PSALME.
O Lord rebuke mee not in thine anger, neither chaſten mee in thy heavie diſpleaſure.
For thine arrowes ſlicke faſt in mee; and thy hand preſſeth mee ſore.
There is no ſoundneſſe in my fleſh, becauſe of thine anger: neither is there any reſt in my bones, by reaſon of my ſinne.
For mine iniquities are gone over my head, as an heavie burthen, they are too heavie for mee.
My wounds ſtincke and are corrupt, becauſe of my fooliſhneſſe.
I am troubled, I am bowed downe greatly; I goe mourning all the day-long.
For my bones are filled with a loathſome diſeaſe: and there is no ſoundneſſe in my fleſh.
I am ſeeble and ſore broken: I have roared through the diſquietneſſe of my heart.
Lord, all my deſire is before thee; and my groaning is not hid from thee.
My heart panteth, my ſtrength faileth me; and as for the light of mine eyes, that alſo is gone from mee.
My loversand friends ſtand aloofe from my ſore, and my kinſmen ſtand a farre off.
They alſo that ſeeke after my life lay ſnares for mee; and they that ſeeke my hurt, ſpeake miſchievous things, and imagine deceit all the day long.
But I as a deafe man heard not; and I was as a dambe man that openeth not his mouth.
Thus I was as a man that beareth not; and in whoſe mouth are no reproofes.
For in thee, O Lord, doe I hope: Thou wile heare mee, O Lord, my God.
For I ſaid, Heare mee, leſt otherwiſe they ſhould reioyce over mee: when my foot ſlippeth, they magnifie themſelves againſt mee.
For I am readie to halt, and my ſorrow is continually before mee.
For I will declare mine iniquitie; I will be ſorry for my ſinne.
But mine enemies are lively, and they are ſtrong; and they that hate mee without cauſe, are multiplied.
They alſo that render evill for good, are mine adverſaries; becauſe I follow the thing that good is.
For ſake me not, O Lord, O my God, be not farre from mee.
Make haſte to helpe mee, O Lord my ſalvation.
