The Sacred Philosophy of the Holy Scripture, Article 3 · Chapter 24
CHAP. XXIIII. That this Jeſus the Sonne of the Virgin Mary, whom the Chriſtian faith confeſſeth, is the Saviour of the world.
THat reverend and fearfull name of God, is a name of glory, but the word Lord importeth the title of that right which he hath in his creature. And how juſtly this belongs to our Lord Chriſt may appeare by that intereſt which he hath in us; …oth by th… right of our creation, and of our redempti…n, and of all the benefits which we hope thereby. What right he …ath in us for our creation it hath appeared, in that wee are his workemanſhip Chap. 13. § 9. Now it remaineth that we make it manifeſt, that he alone is our Mediatour, and that beſides him there is no other: for if the Saviour of the world muſt of neceſſitie be man, that hee might ſatisfie the juſtice of God for the ſinne of man, as we have proved Chap. 20. and likewiſe that he muſt be God, that hee may be able to heare, and to ſave all them that come unto him, as was manifeſt Chap. 21. and that the Sonne of God tooke on him our fleſh, that by him the love of God might be manifeſt to the creature, as it was proved Chap. 23. If there can be but one Sonne of God, as it was ſhewed Chap. 12. and the note thereto; it muſt follow of neceſſity that there can be but one onelyonly Saviour of mankinde, which Saviour is our Lord Ieſus the Sonne of the bleſſed Virgin Mary, as it is further manifeſt by theſe reaſons following.
1. It is neceſſary that all the dignities of God bee magnified in the creature, according to the uttermoſt greatneſſe which they can have therein: But if this Ieſus whom we confeſſe, be the Saviour of the world, then all the dignities of God are magnified, according to the uttermoſt extent of greatneſſe which it is poſſible they ſhould have in the creature and that without any abatement, or l…ſning in any one of them: for his mercy is magnified to the uttermoſt in pardoning the ſins of many for the merit of one; his juſtice and love in this, that he ſpared not his only Son, but gave him to death for a ſatisfaction for the ſin of mankinde; his glory, in that …he creature once ſinfull and mortall, is made partaker of glorie and immortality; his wiſdome, that out of the greateſt ill, the deſtructi n of the creature by the malice of the devill, he hath brought the greateſt good, that is the exaltation of the creature beyond that ſtate of happineſſe wherein it was created, Chap. 18. § 2. and ſo in the reſt. But if this Ieſus bee not the Saviour of the world (as the Iewes affirme) if when that other Bar-Coziba of theirs ſhall come, he preach the ſame doctrine, and doe the ſame glorious miracles which our Lord hath done (though it be impoſſible that God ſhould ſuffer the world to be ſo mocked) then the ſame moſt high and glorious truth ſhould bee both preached and confirmed by a moſt falſe and lying Prophet, who ſhould profeſſe himſelfe the Saviour of the world, and was not; yet nevertheleſſe, ſeeing our Lord was the authour and manifeſter of that truth, he ſhall have the honour to be beleeved, and the falſhood ſhall dwell with that other to come. But if he ſhall preach any other doctrine than this which wee have received, then neither can the dignities of God bee magnified in his greateſt and moſt excellent worke in the creature that is in the ſalvation of mankinde, as was ſhewed before; neither can his Scriptures bee of abſolute authority, when another manner of Saviour ſhall come than they have deſcribed unto us: but both theſe things are utterly impoſſible, and therefore this Ieſus whom the Chriſtian faith confeſſeth to be our Lord, is the Saviour of the world, and beſide him there is no other.
2. If this Ieſus whom wee acknowledge bee the Saviour of the world, then the expectation of the moſt excellent and virtuous men is quieted, and at reſt in the aſſurance of his heavenly promiſe. But if this bee not hee, but that the Saviour is yet to come (for wee have already proved that man having ſinned ſhould be reſtored by a Saviour that ſhould bee both God and man) then ſince that time that Chriſt the Sonne of God and the virgin Mary came, wee that have beleeved in him, are in the greateſt errour that may bee, and all our hope in God (through the ſatisfaction of Chriſt) muſt bee aſhamed, all our beleefe in his word is vaine, and all the virtues, the conſtancie, love and patience of the Martyrs is periſhed; ſo that when that pretended Meſsiah ſhall come, he ſhall not be beleeved, or if he be beleeved, then Goſpell ſhall bee againſt Goſpell, faith againſt faith, love againſt love, hope againſt hope, virtue againſt virtue, and all this about the ſame thing, that is the meanes of everlaſting life. So the love of God toward his creature ſhould not bee manifeſt, in that hee had not made man to know aſſuredly that which concerned him moſt to know. So his juſtice ſhould finde no place to condemne the world of ignorance and misbeleefe. But all theſe things are abſurd and not to be granted: therefore this Ieſus the Sonne of the virgin Mary, is the Saviour of the world.
3. Religion is the band or obligation of the creature unto God to ſerve him, in hope of the excellencie of the reward. So that the moſt excellent Religion muſt give hope of the moſt high reward. Now if this Ieſus whom we confeſſe bee the Saviour of the world, the hope of the faithfull is at reſt, in the aſſurance of that hope of everlaſting life, in the uttermoſt perfection of all happineſſe and joy. But if this be not he who was deſired before he came, and beleeved on ſince his comming; then that Saviour when hee comes muſt give us aſſurance of greater hopes, and promiſes of greater joyes than yet wee have received. But this is impoſſible: therefore this Ieſus in whom we beleeve is the Saviour of the world.
4. It is neceſſary that the Saviour of mankinde doe love mankinde with the uttermoſt perfection of love; ſo that for that loves ſake he offer himſelfe moſt willingly to the endurance of all thoſe things whereby he may procure the ſalvation of man, and the uttermoſt good which may befall him. And if this Ieſus whom wee confeſſe be not the Saviour of the world, then it is requiſite that the Saviour which is to come ſhould love mankinde more and endure greater things for man than he hath done. But this is impoſſible Ioh. 15.13. & Ioh. 10.15. Therefore this Ieſus our Lord is the Saviour of the world.
5. It is impoſſible that the greateſt worke of God toward his creature, that is the ſalvation of mankinde ſhould be in vaine, or that the preaching of the truth thereof ſhould bee utterly unbeleeved. But if this Ieſus which the Chriſtian faith confeſſeth, be not the Saviour of the world, then the preaching of that truth when the pretended Saviour ſhould come, will not be beleeved: and ſo the greateſt worke of God toward mankinde will be in vaine, that is without glory to God and fruitleſſe to man, that will not receive it: for the Chriſtians know that ſalvation is in none other but onelyonly in this Ieſus in whom they beleeve. And although the Mabumetans confeſſe many glorious things of Chriſt, as that hee is the power, wiſdome, breath, and word of God, borne of Mary a perpetuall virgin by a diuine inſpiring, that he raiſed the dead, and did all thoſe miracles which we affirme, and that he was the greateſt Prophet of all that were before him, as you may reade in Cuſa Crib. Alcor. lib. 1. Cap. 12. Gul. Poſtel. de Concord. orbis lib. 2. Marſ. Ficin. de Rel. Chr. Cap. 12. and elſewhere. Yet they neither beleeve that hee did or could dye, or that it was neceſſary that hee ſhould, neither doe they beleeve that hee was the Sonne of God, which conditions wee have before proued to belong neceſſarily to the Saviour of the world. So that if he that ſhall come, do come according to theſe conditions, yet will they not receive him, no more than they receive Chriſt of whom they ſpeake ſuch honourable things. And concerning the Iewes; although it be manifeſt by the word of the Scripture, that the vaile ſhall at laſt be taken from their hearts, that they may underſtand, and be turned to our Lord the Saviour of the world, Hoſ. 3.5. Rom. 11.31. Yet ſeeing that our Lord in reſpect of his humilitie, became unto them a rocke of offence, and reſtored not the temporarie kingdome which they expected (for his kingdome was not of this world) If any other ſhall come in the ſame eſtate and condition, they will not beleeve. And concerning the idolatrous Gentiles, much leſſe will they beleeve, if they may ſay that the Chriſtians which beleeved before in ſuch a Saviour, were not ſaved by him: therefore the condition ſtands ſure; that if this Ieſus whom wee confeſſe be not the Saviour of the world, then that pretended Saviour when hee comes ſhall not bee beleeved; and ſo the greateſt worke of God toward mankinde ſhould be in vaine.
6. If this Ieſus in whom wee beleeve bee not the Saviour of the world, then the greateſt love and thankes which wee give unto God therefore, is leſſe lovely and leſſe acceptable; and the greater number of men ſaved by this faith is leſſe willed of God than that leſſe love, thanks, and number of them which ſhall hereafter beleeve the truth: ſo the greater love ſhall bee deſpiſed for the leſſe, and the greater number miſpriſed for the leſſe: but this is not agreeable to the juſtice of God, and his love to his creature, and therefore not to be admitted: Ergo this Ieſus in whom we beleeve is the Saviour of mankinde.
7. The ſuperexcellent or rather infinite height of that truth which wee profeſſe in the Articles of our faith concerning God the Creator, Redeemer, and Sanctifier of mankinde, and thoſe unſpeakeable benefits which we hope for in the life to come, is ſuch as no created underſtanding could have come unto, except God himſelfe by his word and ſpirit had firſt manifeſted the ſame unto man. And ſeeing it is the truth of God, the wiſdome and goodneſſe of God could not ſuffer that the full, perfect and moſt cleare manifeſtation thereof concerning the perſon by whom, and the time when it was to be fulfilled by his owne promiſe, ſhould bee by a falſe prophet, or that a falſe Chriſt ſhould take his honour to himſelfe, for ſo the moſt high truth ſhould ſuffer ſuch diſcredit thereby, as that it ſhould never bee beleeved. But this is abſurd and inconvenient. And therefore this Chriſt in whom wee beleeve is the true Chriſt, and the Saviour of the world.
8. The whole time of the world is either for preparation to receive the Saviour when hee ſhall come, or manifeſtation of him when hee is come. But God hath long ſince ceaſed to prepare any people to receive him. And therfore the Saviour is already come: for although the Iewes expect a Meſsiah, yet have they no countrey nor forme of Religion appointed by God to uphold that expectation: for the uſe of the ceremoniall Law, wherein the Meſſiah was figured, was commanded onelyonly in their owne land, out of which they being now baniſhed their ceremonies have no uſe. See Deut. 12.1. Ioſ. 5.5.7. Amos 5.25. Hebr. 10. Therefore this Ieſus is the true Meſſiah.
9 Neither may that argument bee omitted, whereby our Lord juſtified himſelfe. Ioh. 7.18. Hee that ſeeketh his glory that ſent him, the ſame is true. Seeing therfore that our Lord ſought not his own glory, but came in the greateſt humility, to endure the greateſt affliction, and moſt cruell death onelyonly for the glory of his Father and the ſalvation of mankind. And moreover, ſeeing God did ſeale unto his words that they were true, by thoſe glorious miracles which hee wrought by him, it followes in great probabilitie, that this Ieſus is the Mediatour by whom alone wee may come unto God, as hee teſtifieth of himſelfe. No man commeth to the Father but by me, Ioh. 14.6 and againe, Iohn 17.3. This is eternall life to know thee the onelyonly true God, and whom thou haſt ſent Ieſus Chriſt.
10 (a) He unto whom all the prophecies of all the Prophets of the Old Teſtament concerning the Saviour to come doe agree, muſt needs be that true Meſſiah or Saviour of the world. But all the Prophecies of the Old Teſtament concerning the Saviour of the world, doe moſt preciſely agree unto this Ieſus whom the Chriſtian faith doth confeſſe, and to none other: therefore this Ieſus the Sonne of the virgin Mary is the Saviour of the world. For it cannot ſtand with the merciemercy of God to his creature; to give us ſignes whereby to know that which concernes us moſt to know, which ſhould not bee ſure and certaine: therefore the propoſition is manifeſt, and the Iewes themſelues doe not gainſay it: the aſſumption will be manifeſt, if the Scriptures of the Old Teſtament bee compared with the hiſtorie of the New. Firſt concerning his being both God and man, Pſal. 2.7. Eſay 9.6, 7. Ier. 33.15, 16. Mich. 5.2. compared with Rom. 1.3, 4. and thoſe other texts which you had before in the end of the 23 Chapter.
Then in all the circumſtances, firſt of the forerunner of Chriſt foretold by Eſay Chap. 40. v. 3.4.5. and Malach. 3.1. compared with Mat. 11.10.14. Iohn 1.23. Secondly, of the time, foretold b Gen. 49.10. c Dan. 9.24, 25, 26, 27. and c Hag. 2.9. and Mal. 3.1. comp…red with Luke 2.25, 26. Matth. 16.3. Luke 12.56. Thirdly of the place of his birth propheſied Michah 5.2. fulfilled Matth. 2.6. Luke 2.4.6. Iohn 7.42. Fourthly, of his mother a virgin, Eſay 7.14. Ier. 31.22. compared with Matth. 1.23. Luke 1.27.34. Fifthly, of the wiſemen of the Eaſt that came to worſhip him, propheſied Pſal. 72.9, 10, 11, 15, and fulfilled Matth. 2.11. Sixthly, of his propheticall authoritie equall to Moſes, Deut. 18.15. and 18. Eſay 42.1.3, 4. and Eſay 61.1, 2, 3. compared with Matth. 12.18.21. and 17.5. Luke 4. from v. 18 to v. 23. Iohn 1.4.5. and 5.46. and 6.14. Acts 6.14. Hebr. 12.26. Seventhly, of his miracles, Eſay 35.5, 6. compared with Mat. 11.5. Ioh. 5.36. and 7.31. and 15.24. Eighthly of his humiliation, which appeared firſt in his low eſtate and povertie, Eſay 53.2, 3, 4. verefied Luke 2.7. Then in his flight to Egypt, Pſal. 80.8.15.17. Hoſ. 11.1. verefied Mat. 2.15. Thirdly in the murther of the innocents of his own age; propheſied, Ier. 31.15. fulfilled, Matth. 2.16.4. by his meane bringing up in Galile, not in the Vniverſity at Ieruſalem; foretold Pſal 22.6. Eſay 9.1. fulfilled Mat. 2.22, 23. & 13.55. Mar. 6.3. Iohn 7.15. Fifthly by his lowly riding on an aſſe, Zach. 9.9. Mat. 21.7. Ioh. 12.14. Sixthly in his reproach and ſcornfull uſage before the high Prieſts and Pilate, where you may remember his meekeneſſe and ſilence, propheſied Pſal. 22.22. and 69.21. where the lots, the ſpeare, his owne words and his enemies, the vineger and the ſpunge of Colocynthis, are not forgotten. Eſay 50.6. and 53. all Micah 5.1. fulfilled in all the Goſpels. Then in his crucifying with the theeves propheſied Numb. 21.8.9. Deut. 21.23. Eſay 53.12. fulfilled in all the Goſpels, and Gal. 3.13. Eighthly in his death Eſay 53.8.10. and Matt. 27.50. Laſtly in his buriall, Eſay 53.9. Iohn 19.40.
A ninth argument from the prophecies of the Old Teſtament. That this Ieſus is the Saviour of the world; is from his exaltation and the glories that ſhould follow his ſufferings. As firſt, his reſurrection; propheſied Pſal. 16.10. & 68.20. Hoſ. 6.2. fulfilled Matth…w, Marke, Luke, Iohn, Act. 2.24. 1. Cor. 15. By vertue of which, they that had ſlept in his faith, did alſo riſe as it was prophecied, Pſal. 68. the 18. and Ioh. 5.25. fulfilled Matth. 27.52.53. Secondly, his Aſcenſion; propheſied, Pſal. 24.9. & 68.18. Mic. 2.13. fulfilled in all the Goſpels, and Act. 1.9. Eph. 4.9.10. Thirdly, his ſitting at the right hand of God; Pſal. 16.11. & 110.1. compared with Mar. 16.19. Act. 2.34. & 7.56. Rom. 8.34. Heb. 1.13. Fourthly, the gifts wherewith hee beautified his Church of the faithfull Beleevers; prophecied in the text cited before, Pſal. 68.18. and Ioel 2.28. fulfilled Mar. 16.17, 18. Acts 2.4. and ver. 17.18.33. 1. Cor. 12.28. Fifthly, the increaſe of his Church by the converſion of the Gentiles, propheſied Eſay 42. al. 52.13.14. and 54.1. Pſal. 2.8. and Pſal. 22.27, 28. So commanded by our Lord Matth. 28.19. Mar. 16.8. ſo performed by his Diſciples Acts 8.35. Mar. 16.20. and Act. 10.34. &c. and 13.46 47. and found true by experience almoſt theſe 1600 yeeres. Sixthly, his taking away of the Ceremoniall Law, propheſied Eſay 66.3. Ier. 31.31, 32, 33. Dan. 9.27. Hag. e 2.6. fulfilled Iohn 4.21.23, 24. Acts. 15. al. Gal. 2.16. and 3.10, 11, 19, 21. Heb. al. eſpecially Chap 9 & 10. Seventhly, his deſtroying the workes of the devill, 1. Iohn 3. ſpeaking of his inſatanized Prophets in Egypt, at Delphi, at Dodone, at Colophon, and in every corner of the earth. This was propheſied Zach. 13.2, 3, 4. & accordingly he rebuked the unclean ſpirits and ſuffered them not to ſpeake, Mar. 3.12. So Paul, Acts 16.18. and this the devils themſelves confeſſed, as you may reade note b on the 8 Chapter, number 1. The Hebrew Childe, &c. anſwerable to that of the Poet, Iuven. Sat. 6. Delphis Oracula ceſſant. of Plutarch de defectu Oraculorum, and others.
A tenth argument from the prophecies of the old Teſtament, that this Ieſus our Lord is the Saviour that was promiſed Gen. 3.15. is from forreine circumſtances, and among them, firſt from the treaſon of Iudas propheſied Pſal. 41.9. and 53.13. fulfilled Math. 26.15. and 23. and with the hyre of his treaſon, the thirty pieces of ſilver, take the beſtowing of it propheſied in the 11. Chap. v. 12, 13. of Zachariah, Remember the Lord, by equivalence, Ieremiah, exalt the Lord, becauſe he ought never to be remembred without his praiſe, fulfilled Matth. 27.7.10. Then the reward of his treaſon, Pſal. 55.15. and 109.8. with Matth. 27.5. and Acts 1.18. and 20. Secondly, from the chiefe acceſſaries in the murder: propheſied concerning Herod and Pontius Pilate, Pſal. 2.2. fulfilled Luke 23.12. Acts 1.26, 27. And concerning the Prieſts and Scribes it was propheſied Gen. 49.6. fulfilled Matth. 26.3. Mar. 15.11. Luke 22.2.
Thirdly from his friends forſaking Him, foretold, Pſal. 38.11. Zach. 13.7. compared with Matth. 26.56. & 27.55. what can the Infidell, Iew or Turke now ſay for their unbeleefe? when by all theſe arguments, and all things elſe whatſoever were propheſied of Him, our Lord bath beene approved to bee that Saviour that was to come into the world? yea ſo approved by the rule of the Law, Deut. 18 22. and their owne expoſitors, Moimony in Ieſude hatorah cap. 10. that even becauſe they beleeve not, therefore is our Lord Ieſus that true Prophet that was to come; Becauſe hee foretold both their unbeleefe, and the puniſhment thereof. Therefore beſide other circumſtances and proofes in this abundance not neceſſary to bee remembred, take for another argument the unbeleefe of the Iewes and the deſtruction of their citty and ſcattering of that nation, as the puniſhment of that unbeleefe. Their hardnes of heart and incredulity was propheſied, Pſ. 118.22. Eſ. 6.9.10. &c. 8.14.15. &c. 52.1.2.3. The ſcattering of the whole nation is propheſied, Lev. 26. verſ. 27. to 40. Deut. 28.64. & Hoſ. 3.4. & 9.17. The deſtruction of the cittie and Temple was foretold. Dan. 9.26. and by our Lord himſelfe, Luk. 19.43.44. & ch. 21.20. with the continuance of that deſolation, Luk. 21.24. And of this their unbeleefe, and ſcattering of the Nation, and deſolation of Ieruſalem, the Iewes themſelves and all the world with them, are witneſſes unto this day. If you deſire further conferring of the Texts of the old Teſtament with the new, you may reade Tertul. lib. 3. et 4. adverſus Marcionem.
11. To the death and ſufferings of our Lord whereby wee are redeemed unto God the Father, Rev. 5.9. wee may alſo adde the death and ſufferings of his Saints, as it is written, Pſal. 44. verſ. 11. to 23. compared with Rom. 8.36. For even from Abel to Iſaacke and ſo forward; they that have beene borne after the fleſh, have perſecuted them that have beene borne according to the Spirit, Gal. 4.29. And although theſe perſecutions have beene more common and grievous at ſome time than other; as it may appeare by the bookes of the Maccabees, and the ten perſecutions of the primitive Church foretold. Reu. 2.10. yet that rule holds, and ſtill ſhall, till that King doe come that ſhall reigne in Iuſtice, that all that will live godly in Chriſt muſt ſuffer perſecution, 2 Tim. 3.12. For whether it bee that God by afflictions and perſecutions doth try the conſtancie and patience of his ſervants, and exerciſe their faith in his promiſes: or whether by trouble and perſecution, hee will teach them not to looke for their portion in this life: or to make them more conformable to the death of his Sonne, that they may alſo bee partakers of his reſurrection: or that the reward of their afflictions may bee with an exceeding waight of glory: or that in the life to come they may by compariſon inioy the fullneſſe of their happineſſe in more thankefullneſſe, and the perfection of love to the author thereof: or that the devil may in Iuſtice puniſh ſuch as forſake his obedience (for by the taint of originall ſinne wee all became his vaſſalls) and God is not uniuſt no not to the devill himſelfe, and therefore ſuffers him to afflict them, whom he himſelfe will comfort, Ioh 1. Reu. 2.10. or whether the devil to keepe his owne vaſſals in firme obedience, doth more eagerly perſecute the truth: this is a ſure concluſion, that from Abel to this day, the truth of the Religion of Chriſt, and the obedient and faithfull profeſſours thereof, have ever beene perſecuted, whereas all Idolatry and ſuperſtition of how different kinds ſoever, hath beene and is freely exerciſed. From whence the reaſon will follow thus.
If the Religion of Chriſt, and the faith in him have onelyonly beene perſecuted by the devill and his Inſtruments, even from the beginning of the world untill now; then the faith in Chriſt is onelyonly the true faith, and Hee the onelyonly Saviour of the world. But the firſt is true by the teſtimony of the holy Scripture, and all thoſe hiſtories both eccleſiaſticall and prophane that write any thing concerning this matter; and the practice of the Turkes at this day doth approve it. Therefore the Faith in Chriſt is onelyonly the true faith, and He the onelyonly Saviour of the world.
12. To this argument of the ſufferings for the faith of Chriſt you may take another from the hereſies that have beene thereabout. For as a malitious enemy beſieging a Caſtle impregnable poiſons the fountaine of which the defenders muſt needs drinke: ſo the faith of Chriſt being that onelyonly fountaine of life, by which we are ſuſtained in our ſpirituall warfare, hath by the malice of the devill, beene troubled g with all kindes of hereſies, which the devill could poſſibly forge by the wits of his Inſtruments: whereas in all the falſe worſhips that have beene in the world, no queſtions nor diſſentions have beene, but every man wandred as hee was led, in the darkeneſſe of his fooliſh heart. And yet in all theſe hereſies, through the gratious direction of the Spirit of Chriſt, and the light of his word, the true faith hath prevailed, according to his promiſe, Math. 16.18. That all the devils that paſſe in and out at the gates of Hell ſhall not prevaile againſt it. From whence you may reaſon thus. That faith which onelyonly hath beene attempted by all manner of hereſies to bee corrupted thereby, and yet hath ſtood uncorrupted and unreproveable in the True Faith. But the Chriſtian Faith onelyonly is ſuch. Therefore the Chriſtian Faith onelyonly is the true Faith, and conſequently our Lord Ieſus is the Saviour of the world; ſeeing in Him onelyonly wee looke for redemption.
13. And this is that pole of the Loadſtone whereto we may bee directed by every point within the compaſſe of the holy Scripture. And theſe pointers that follow are ſufficient to ſhew it, Act. 2.36. Let all the houſe of Iſrael know aſſuredly, that God hath made that ſame Ieſus whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Chriſt, Act. 4. v. 10.11.12. There is no ſalvation in any other: for there is no name under heaven given among men whereby wee muſt be ſaved, ſave onelyonly the name of Ieſus Chriſt of Nazareth, whom God hath raiſed from the dead, Act. 16.31. Beleeve on the Lord Ieſus Chriſt, and thou ſhalt be ſaved and thy whole houſe, Act. 17.3. Paul opened and proved that Chriſt muſt needes have ſuffered, and riſen againe from the dead: and this Ieſus whom I preach unto you is the Chriſt, Act. 18.28. He mightily convinced the Iewes and that publikely ſhewing by the Scriptures that Ieſus was the Chriſt. 1 Cor. 3.11. other foundation can no man lay, than that is laid which is Ieſus Chriſt, Gal. 1.8.9. Though we or an Angel from heaven preach any other Goſpel to you than that you have received, let him be accurſed.
